On the opposite side of that coin, I recently ran into a kid in school, that was.. a ding. Just barely a blip on people's radars, I actually have spoken to people about him before that time, about how I felt pity for him.
He wasn't even in a clique of "losers", "stoners", well,... ANY clique.. he just went through every day stoically, not interacting much, or being interacted with.

It sounds to me like your phone's pairing is the issue. Were it me, I'd a) try and get a solid headset. (I use the plantronics explorer 320, and found it better than alot of more expensive units.)
The blue ant micro is also a really nice unit.
But, any of these units wil probably show you the same problem because your PHONE is corrupting your pairing profile when you get out of range and drop it.

LG is a good brand of phone and the VX 9800 is no exception, but, let me tell ya, I have a nokia 6255 and I am in love with it. the clarity is phenomenal noone even knows when Im on my bluetooth, and I have had no issues with it whatsoever as far as lighting or other features. My main complaint is it doesnt support alot of the better 1XRTT tech.
