If it was updated with a Li-ion battery and GPS, old people would be snapping these up like so many Depends-brand undergarments.

That's not what he's asking about. Yes, go into a VZW Communications Store & have the technician upgrade the firmware. It will make the phone work a lot better, but it's still no great shakes. I had one for a long time & it was nothing but problems, even with the firmware update. Sorry about your friend.

The VX-4400 was the handset that really turned me around on LG. When I sold them through Sprint, I hated the brand with a passion, since all I ever got were complaints, but the VZW LGs seem to be quality devices. I bought one for my wife, and it worked great until the day I got her a VX-7000. Now, it sits in a drawer and collects dust. Oh, well.

I'd use the Nokia if it was me. We had a ton of 414s returned due to RF issues & general crappiness, but only 1 Nokia 3589i, and that was due to customer defect, not phone problems. I really like it. I'm not at all happy that they're not going to make the phone much longer. The 6015i is the same price, but has fewer features.

Check around at exclusive agents. Some of them still have the 9900 in stock. Be warned that you'll probably pay a big chunk of change for them. It's a dope phone. The t9 takes a bit of getting used to, I prefer Moto's setup. Mobile Web 2.0 is a lot easier to use & understand. I think it feels like a very well built device. Very solid. On the 6015i, Verizon had the BREW function disabled, so no Get-It-Now & also no National Access - meaning you can't use a cable to hook the thing up to a laptop & use it as a modem. I think this is probably a mistake - the 3589i had both, and this phone is designed to replace that handset. Same price point & everything.

Oy. I like Motorola's Mobile Phone Tools. I've been using V2.0 for a while, and it's a good setup. I hear 3.0 should be a good bit better. I've used Nokia's PC ...
