He needs a Mobile Office Kit. Cost is around $50, it includes a USB cable & software. You can order them from Verizon or LG.

There's also a GIN application called Backup Assistant which is 1.99 subscripton available for the 6000, 4500, 4400 and slider which would let you upload wirelessly to a secure website.

Of course, downloading that app on the phone and navigating blind is going to be a bit difficult.
If his phone still turns on he can probably still do a Cellebrite flash from his prior phone to his new phone. Ten bucks for a contact list or phonebook flash.
