Emoji! 😃🎉

We're pleased to announce that you can now use the full set of 😁 in comments and forum messages here! From 💩 to 🐩, from your phone or computer, standard unicode emoji is now fully supported on phonescoop.com. 💃

In light of this, we're retiring the old "emoticons" for new use. And soon, we'll replace "emoticons" in old messages with their new 🙂 equivalents, for consistency.

To make this possible, we had to convert all of our content to a new "character set". Due to limitations of our database software, this meant that some non-standard and non-English characters got a little mangled. Messages posted in Chinese, for example, are now gibberish. (But we've always been clear that our focus is on the U.S. market, and nearly 99% of our reade...

New site feature: glossary pop-ups

We've added a new feature to the site when browsing from a desktop/laptop. When you hover your cursor over a glossary term, (on a phone spec page, for example,) you'll get a pop-up preview of our glossary entry for that term.

Let me know if you run into any issues with this feature or have feedback on it. Thanks!

Hey Rich Brome. Quit Trolling me.

Seriously. It's annoying. If your intention is to troll all my posts and nitpick each and every one, go ahead and just ban me. I won't be bullied by you. I couldn't care less why you decided to become obsessed with me, but seriously, knock it off.
Really? What's the point? You trying to prove you can bully me? You can't. You can ban me. You can nitpick. You can delete all my posts that you disagree with. You can censor dissenting opinions that contradict your own. You can do all that.
Unfortunately, you cannot be morally upstanding and do so. You cannot maintain the illusion of fairness with that behavior.
You may have the ability to decide what is on your forum, but you don't decide what is right and fair. You don't decide the truth. M...

After several months of the new format

I've decided that I absolutely hate it. It's almost impossible to follow a thread anymore. The way the site expands comments it hides so much of the dialogue you have to spend several minutes hunting for all the comments. I can remember one thread were there were supposedly 25 or 26 comments and I was never able to find the last comment. I got dizzy trying to count all the comments just to see if I had actually found them all. The new format is a huge step backwards. And I've seen discussion on most topics dwindle to next to nothing. If you want more activity on the site, I sincerely recommend a complete overhaul of the forums and comments sections.

New site features!

Over the weekend, we launched a few neat updates to the site:
  1. We're now cross-listing discussion threads for specific phones and articles about those phones. This helps you find all of the discussion about a given phone that was previously siloed in several different places. For example, the HTC 10 forum now shows threads commenting on the HTC 10 hands-on article:
    https://www.phonescoop.com/phones/p_forum.php?ff=5140 »
  2. Carrier pages now include a clear list of radio bands and technologies used by that carrier's network, to help you find compatible unlocked phones. These lists also link to improved glossary pages about each band.
  3. Pages where you check phones to compare -- such as carrier pages and Phone Finder

Consolidated Forums

Once again, I make my annual plea to the mods...PLEASE consolidate the prepaid phone forums with their parent companies. Considering the fact that very little forum dialog happens these days, it would definitely help increase discussions that happen here.

Specifically, I recommend putting Cricket under AT&T, Metro PCS underneath T-Mobile, Virgin and Boost under Sprint.

Come on, guys! This is the year to consider it.

Check your email! You may have won a phone!

As you may have noticed, we recently conducted a give-away of 15 phones and gadgets.

Everyone that's submitted a user review of a phone in the past two years was eligible.

We contacted all 15 winners last night, but so far we've only heard back from six. If you've submitted a user review here, please check your email now! Check your spam folder, too! If we don't hear from the winners by 10pm tonight, we'll have to draw new names. We'd hate for someone to have their name drawn but miss out.

More info here:

DEAR OVERZEALOUS MODERATORS

Outside of communist China, the word "dingleberry" is not now nor has it ever been a censorable word. Please do your best to promote a free exchange of ideas outside of your own preconceived notion of morality. If my kid's kindergarten teacher doesn't censor the word, you probably shouldn't either.

New forum design!

As you no doubt noticed, we just launched a major overhaul of our forum & comment system. We're eager to hear your feedback on it.

We had several goals. The first was simply to streamline the flow, making it faster & easier to navigate and post. The old system required a new page load for each message, which was... well, obnoxious. Each thread still lives on its own page, for some specific reasons, but we've managed to cut down on new page loads dramatically, speeding up the experience quite a bit.

Our other goal was to preserve the advantages and uniqueness of our old system, which is a clear, hierarchical thread structure that makes it easy to see who's replying to what. Other systems that show everything at once, on one page, don't...

Page loading wrong

You know how your home page (for the full desktop site) has the news feed down the middle and the list of new devices down the right side? Well, I am just seeing the first 2 or 3 news articles down the middle and then the content seemingly truncated by the list of new devices, which goes right down the middle instead over on the right where it normally is. There is only white space on the right. Your page wasn't doing this when I first arrived, but it seems the list of new devices is now overwriting the content in the middle of the page. Did you guys just change something?

New login and registration system, plus other site updates

We've updated our login and registration system.

The big change is with new user registration. Most of you reading this probably already have an account, but if not, it's now much easier and faster to register. We've also greatly streamlined the process of registering while trying to post a new comment/message or user review.

Logging in to an existing account should be roughly the same, it just looks a bit different.

We're eager to hear any feedback you may have on these changes. If you have trouble registering, you can let us know here and we'll look into it right away:

We've also made progress updating the site (desktop and mobile) to look better on high-DPI (Retina-...

Problem with searching

I wanted to find all smartphones that have an external Antenna jack.

In the Phone finder section I clicked Android, Ios and windows under smartphone/os, then chose 'external antenna jack', but all I get is the Motorola droid. I know that not complete because these Windows Mobil phones have an external jack:

Cingular & HTC

APACHE, PPC-6700, XV-6700
XV6800, PPC6800, P4000, Mogu
HTC (tytn OR HERMES OR p4500 OR 8525)
Cingular & HTC Phone 2100, 2125 (Faraday)
Cingular & HTC Phone 8100,8125 (MDA, K-JAM)
8525, TyTN, JasJam, Hermes
S620 (Dash, Excalibur)
S621

Upcoming prepaid phones

As someone who is in the market for a new prepaid device, specifically metro pcs, it's hard to make a decision on a new phone when there's the potential for a new device to come out shortly after your purchase. Does anyone know of a way to know what devices might be coming out soon so I can know if the device in considering purchasing would be a good idea or if it would be a better idea to wait for something coming soon?

Please review more prepaid phones

I have metro pcs and I've been looking for a new phone for about a month and a half. I always have turned to phonescoop for valuable information and opinions to help me reach a better educated decision on my phone purchases when I had a post paid phone, but now that I have metro pcs, I have noticed it appears the only prepaid phones you have reviewed lately are for boost. If I'm not mistaken, you've only reviewed two metro pcs phones this year. With prepaid having a virtual revolving door of phones two phones in almost right months wouldn't seem to be enough. I mean last I knew, the majority of the country uses prepaid services and devices and not reviewing enough of these phones might turn people away. Can you please review some more prepai...
