Recommended unlocked phone for Europe & Asia

This year will see me traveling to Europe, Japan, and Singapore. I looked at the Samsung A790 as I am Sprint in the US, but while traveling I mostly call out to the US and other people within the country I am in. The A790 has several negatives on user reports, plus the calls appear to be more than using an unlocked phone and buing SIMs. Also the feature of allowing others to call me on my US number is not so vital.

What phone is recommended?

I'm new to this forum, so TIA.

Need 5 week in-country phone service in England and Ireland, and don't know which way to turn.

Wonder if I could get some advice about phone service while visiting the United Kingdom and Ireland this spring. I am only talking about phone use within England and Ireland exclusively, not for calling back to the USA.

I will be there for about five weeks, and am trying to decide whether to use phone cards within country or purchase a mobile phone and use prepaid SIM cards. I hear that phone cards are fine, but somewhat inconvenient in Ireland because it is sometimes hard to find a phone unless you are in a large city. I'll be traveling all over the country, and will sometimes be in rural areas.

I am at a loss as to how to even contact someone who sells these type mobile phones, and thus have no idea of what the costs would be. ...

Buying Unlocked i860...and going back home with it.

Here's the deal:

I've been living for 2 1/2 months in the US, and I'll be going back home in April.
I have a Nextel Account in Argentina.
I'm using my i205 here, with International Direct Connect.
I'm gonna buy an unlocked i860 without SIM. The 860 is being sold in Argentina, so there should be no problems regarding the technology.
My SIM card is a 64 k one.

The question is:

If I buy this phone, will I be able to use it while I'm staying here? And when I go back to Argentina will the phone work?

Thx. 😕

Switching Over from Japan

A friend of mine just recently came back from a one year stay in Japan. She brough her cell phone with her and wants to know if it can be changed over for use through an American carrier. The phone is a Sanyo A5360ST from the AU lineup by KDDI. It is a CDMA2000 1x. Any info would be of great help. We've been told that some of the Japanese exchange students have been able to have their phones switched over so we're looking into it. Thanks.

Buying UK phone to use in US

Hello! I am going to London and Germany at the end of the month. I use t-mobile in the US and I was wondering if I could buy a phone from overseas and just put my sim card in it here in the US? The phones outside of the US seem so much better. I tried looking on some UK websites, but they all mentioned "rentals" and "tarrifs". Can anyone give me an idea of if this will work and how to find the price to actually purchase a phone without renting it or signing a contract? Thanks!! 😁

GSM 900/1800/1900 vs. GSM 850/1800/1900

Why are GSM 900/1800/9000 phones considered "world phones", while GSM 850/1800/1900 phones are not?

IMO only quadband phones should be considered "world phones".

True World Phones seem to be here now

I'm trying to find out if anybody has tested or used two new, I mean brand new Worldphones operating under CDMA 1X 1900MHz in the USA (or 800MHz) and GSM 900/1800MHz in Europe/Asia. The two phones I'm talking about are

1) Samsung SCh-a790 Global Phone
2) Motorola A840 World Phone

The first phone seems to be available by Verizon, but not retail currently. It seems the only way to get it is through their web site. The second phone is still not available to my knowledge, even though it announced back in March at CTIA show. My guess is that it will have to be either Verizon or Spint but neither confirm they are brining it out.

Does anybody have any feedback. Please e-mail me at karlweaver@earthlink.net

Karl Weaver

live from Italy?

Hi,

I'm looking into a study trip to Rome next summer (though it may not happen, but I'm allowed to dream). I would like to be able to keep a blog or livejournal that I can update from a handheld (like a Blackberry) but I don't know if this is possible, or if the service is available in Italy. Does anyone have any experience with travelling in Italy, or recommendations for a handheld that would be appropriate? Less expensive models would be better of course (student budget and all), but any kind of recommendation would be helpful. I know just about nothing about the industry.

thanks,
Pip

Is the 2100 band availible in the US?

Just a random thought I had. With UMTS rolling out, is the 2100MHz band availible for wireless carriers to buy spectrum in? If so, would that enable the manufacture of a UMTS world phone that could *gasp* support Japanese roaming? Thanks for any input.

Verizon roaming in Mexico/Dominican Republic Questions

Does anyone know VZW's rates from Cancun? I believe it is 69 cents roaming plus 20 cents Long Distance, anyone know if this is the case? Also, anybody familiar with roaming rates in Dominican Republic? Thanks.
