Switching Over from Japan

A friend of mine just recently came back from a one year stay in Japan. She brough her cell phone with her and wants to know if it can be changed over for use through an American carrier. The phone is a Sanyo A5360ST from the AU lineup by KDDI. It is a CDMA2000 1x. Any info would be of great help. We've been told that some of the Japanese exchange students have been able to have their phones switched over so we're looking into it. Thanks.

My question is, how did you get a CDMA phone in Japan? They are all UMTS. Anyways, it depends. If the phone is 850MHz, you might be able to get it to work with Verizon, but I don't know how. I'm sure someone here knows though :-)

It's an older phone. It's a bit out-dated so KDDI doesn't carry it anymore.
