Re: DT's negatives and benefits of a potential buyout of Sprint.

Hmmm... Synergies. You keep using that word. I do not think it means what you think it means. Or maybe you use it as many other use it, just as a buzzword. A new-found version of "et cetera," that vaguely implies "lay-off redundant employees and systems," but that's not what the word is supposed to mean. Right now, I think that DT buying Sprextel would mean more hemorrhaging, not less. Point by point: 1) Increase the spectrum position Well, that's all fine ...

Sounds like someone couldn't meet his quota and got let go. Sorry dude. And just how did you get 5 employee lines again? It's obvious that you're smarter than all us VZW emps. I mean, you gladly paid ETFs when you could have bailed for free. That's some out-of-the-box thinking there. I don't think I ever would have thunk of that. Of course, not being in sales, I'm not worried that I'm ...

Re: vz navigator is not GPS?
Jul 11, 2007, 10:29 AM
in the Verizon forum

I can confirm what the others have said below. VZNav uses GPS when it can and trilaterates (google that word, it's not the same as triangulate) off of cell towers when it can't get good satellite data. After it gets the route, it has to use GPS to track itself, otherwise the refresh speed would be painfully slow. On internal GPS, the chipset can update like every second or two. On working with an AGPS ...

Re: GSM network?

You really can't compare the 8 vs 40 because the 8 is on a narrowband freq (I forget, something like 200 KHz maybe) and the 40 is on a 1.25 MHz band. And that 40 is just a default #, I've seen 25 and I've seen > 70, well, in Erlangs at least... I think that voice quality and data speeds are pretty comparable between the two, although CDMA seems to have a bigger high speed data footprint. ...

I would not use 922 or 923. They are used for e911 testing and they may (or may not) get you on the line with a emergency operator. Your location will not be sent to your phone using 922 or 923. It's not like a map will magically appear with your location on it. In fact, in many markets, 923 won't do diddly.

Re: Cingular 4th quarter results
Jan 25, 2007, 5:35 PM
in the AT&T forum

Cingy had a great 4th quarter, no lie. But similar to Sprextel, the overall profitability of that 2.4 mil is not the same as 2.4 mil post paid. That is where the similarity ends. Sprextel has had infinitely more difficulty bringing together their two networks than Cingy/AT&T. Side note -- Two years ago, everyone was all over post paid and the quarterly numbers were from almost all post paid customers. Those days are gone. ...

OK, from RCRNews, http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article? AID=/20070124/FREE/70124001/1002 And, since RCR won't be available for free tomorrow, the breakdown is: 746,000 Cingular Pre-paid 750,000 Resellers 861,000 Cingular Post-Paid That doesn't quite reach 2.4000 million net adds, but close enough.

OK, they're not bleeding customers like Sprextel. And 2.4 mil is nothing to sneeze at. VZ could get a ton of net adds and still look like the kind who got second place in the spelling bee. Wait until Monday.

Re: Cingular 4th quarter results
Jan 24, 2007, 5:20 PM
in the AT&T forum

I think what the article was saying is 861k post-paid, some other number pre-paid (in the article, but I'm too lazy to check, about the same # as the post-paid), and then another amount that makes up the remainder of the 2.4 million, so say another 700k or so. I think that last number is from resellers but I'm not sure. The total number quoted by AT&T (2.4 mil) is about three times the number of post-paid ...

Dude, back away from the keyboard. I work for VZW and I'm embarassed by your post. Feel free to throw in a bit of punctuation now and then. And no, emoticons are not considered punctuation. BTW, I'm an apple fiend and terribly jealous that Jobs is jobbing everyone except Cingy. But one phone is not going to make or break a company, especially one that's $500. Re: Prediction for four quarter

I say a slight net customer loss. Maybe -15k or so. Despite the nice network and wide array of data products, tons of folks are churning off of the old Nextel side and that will hurt Sprint. Yes, I work for a competitor. No, I'm not a sales monkey drinking company koolaid. I think Sprint has a nice company but merged at the worst possible time.

Re: What is sprint going to do in 2007?
Jan 3, 2007, 3:40 PM

Rev A is a bit faster on the download but not by much. The two big improvements come from being able to lower the latency for packets coming from the tower to the phone (makes VoIP and Push To Talk palatable) and a much better uploading data rate.

Slight increase on theoretical download speeds, you probably won't see it unless you are really close to a cell site. Big increase in upload speeds. Also big improvement in latency, meaning stuff like PTT and VoIP will work reasonable well with Rev A instead of just stinking up the joint with Rev 0.

Re: It was a very bad 3rd quarter for Sprint, but that was expected.
Oct 26, 2006, 3:13 PM
in the Sprint forum

Ouch. Another rub (not that I relish seeing Sprextel having issues, even though I work for a rival) is that their best two numbers don't have much synergy. Data ARPU is based on postpaid users, not on Boost users. So they are advancing with Boost and with high end data stuff but don't seem to be able to get the two to build on each other. I dunno. Sprextel is huge and well funded. ...

Sounds like doublespeak to me. Assets? Like what? More money? More market share? Better personnel? I just don't see anything there that Sprint doesn't already have. This isn't a question of "Is Sprint+Nextel more than the sum of it's parts?" It is a question of "What assets does Nextel have to offer Sprint in the future, i.e., assets that Sprint hasn't alreay taken property of?"

Re: What about CDMA 900/1800
Aug 28, 2006, 10:58 AM

Two reasons, 1) VZW is a different company than VZ, Vodafone owns 45% or so. So to keep VZW from competing with Vodafone overseas, VZW is restricted by it's charter to working domestically, meaning only inside the US. So VZW only sells phones designed to work on US CDMA, not on other CDMA bands. They do sell a CDMA/GSM phone to work in Europe, but that's the exception to the rule. 2) The US FCC ...

Yup, VZW and Sprint/Nextel are the two companies who offer GPS nav systems. Couldn't tell you which is better, as I only see the VZW half of the equation, but they are probably pretty equal as far as accuracy of directions and such. I have a slight bias against the Nextel version, as it only works in the car, not so well in the car garage. VZW & Sprint won't work all that well, but they are ...

Right now it's just the Migo that can be tracked. There will be other phones later this year or early next year that will be trackable. Marketing wants to get a phone that Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers would enjoy but for now it's only the Migo.

Hmmm... Well, working where I work, folks are taking this seriously. Very seriously. I think the telephia report might be more unbiased that you think. I've worked with telephia for other stuff, everything seemed on the up and up. Of course, like you pointed out, JD Power used a different methodology, perhaps one more comprehensive. I still think that the telephia report and Cingy claim is more than mere spin.

Looking over their mgmt team, you could also add Sid Gorham's relationship to AirTouch (now owned by Vodafone and expressed here as VZW). But wouldn't anyone with wireless telecom experience have to have worked with one of the carriers previously? I mean, how much of a guru could you have become without your connection to Sprint and Nextel? Does that mean that you could claim to be "indpendent," as Telephia claims to be, and yet still ...

Naah, you can't blame the kid for braggin'. It's not polite, but I don't lose any sleep over nextel18 being impolite anymore. That's part of his "special charm." In fact, when he polite, humble, or apologetic (he has been so in the past, Cub Scout's Honor, I've seen it), I'm usually so overwhelmed that I have to stop and take my pulse.
