I wish Cingular,or Sprint would increase their native coverage in the west, and start putting up their own towers in montana, that way since i live in Montana that would increase competition, and get some more national providers in here, since all we have now is Verizon who I have and Alltel.

If more people live there, they would. I am not sure about Cingular, but Sprint doesn't have that much cash compare to Verizon.

Again it has to deal with ROIC and if the carrier can maximize that then they will go ahead with putting the towers there if not however they won’t.

Sprint has a lot of money and will raise their capital expenditures if need be when it is feasible to do so. Don’t forget, they have Nextel’s assets too.

Other companies have money also, and they will increase their capital expenditures if they see that the right metrics meet their business and financial models.

Don't be too upset with him. He works hard copying and pasting material from major websites.

OK, one of you guys far more versed than I...how, specifically, will this effect T-Mobiles coverage and signal strength versus Verizon? I'm most seflishly interested in and around New York, where I'm thinking of leaving Verizon (MacCellular)...? Thanks for any info.

This is not exactly for voice coverage. This auction is for 3G/4G spectrum.

actually, TMUS has done it pretty well (over 126 licenses after round 24) 😉
they got most of CWA, and most of REAGs' coverage (except Alaska)
TMUS definitely uses it for UMTS/HSDPA, and open up new markets (Carolinas/Puerto Rico) 🙂

I know I'm coming in on this late, but what exactly does this mean?

What does what mean?

Soon Nextel will bring over their assets to the Sprint network, which will make it even stronger.

Sounds like doublespeak to me. Assets? Like what? More money? More market share? Better personnel? I just don't see anything there that Sprint doesn't already have. This isn't a question of "Is Sprint+Nextel more than the sum of it's parts?" It is a question of "What assets does Nextel have to offer Sprint in the future, i.e., assets that Sprint hasn't alreay taken property of?"

Well assets are anything that has to deal with the company from network infrastructure, licenses to management and personnel.

Simple; More towers, more licenses.

Well, you must remember in this business the carriers/operators need to get the most for their investment or ROIC. (Return on invested capital) Since building out towers is a lot of money, they must choose wisely in which places gives them the best ROIC and if they feel that the roaming deals that they set up are feasible then they will leave it instead of putting up their own towers.
