Palm gets it
they finally figured out that any idiot can build hardware. they should have stopped relying on microsoft and their own dinosaur OS years ago. while the blackberry hardware is nice, it's the OS coupled with the server solutions (read: Software) that make it great; same with the iphone. the hardware is nice, but it's the Sw that makes it awesome. webOS ups the ante. we'll see if winmo 7 for smartphone keeps up.
Re: Remember now...
but they"ll experience greater cell phone coverage! seems like a fair trade off.
Re: whoa!
for xampl, big red (by assuming alltel's debt and financing more debt for the acquisition) now has a total debt load of $63 billion. Sprint has about $23 billion in debt.
verizon debt: http://money.cnn.com/2008/06/05/technology/ve rizondebt.fortune/index.htm
sprint debt: http://www.reuters.com/article/marketsNews/id INN1034736720081210?rpc=44
much of this debt is financed like a municiplaities issues bonds. it is for the purpose of raising revenues from investors. not all the debt exclusively, but most of it.
Re: lol @ Verizon Wireless Licenses Klausner's Visual "Vicemail" Tech
it wouldn't affect the price of any equipment, but possibly could affect the price of th downloadable voicemail applicaton.
Re: I wish they would not acquire Alltel in the first place
just thought i'd point out that since our economy is largly based on consumer spending, the purchase of ringtones and the like from their rightful owners would stimulate the economy. just saying. 8)
our government needs to stop treating consumers like children
read Terms and Conditions of the major carriers. that is not a 'material change' because specific pricing rates of services are not part of the contract. the TNC generally state that consumers agree to pay for services whatever the carrier deems appropriate, and that prices are subject to change with or without notice. the consumer has at least 15 days and up to 30 to read the TNC and agree to this, or they can cancel. after that, if ...
Re: is this a joke?
not a rumor, the service has already been launched along with new phones that are not "crappy." it runs on evdo RevA, and speed tests are showing it to be camparable to Nextels.
Re: Why companies complain...
no kidding.... taxpayers will inevitably end up subsidizing this nonsense.
Re: oh dear oh dear
Rightly said.
Re: oh dear oh dear
but the point is that this model of free internet service doesn't work for for-profit companies. again, look at all the municipal wi-fi systems that are being shut down. the only free internet offerings that work are for comapnies like Panera Bread where the customers use the wifi and buy coffee or something. but the customer has to come into their store to use it.
Re: oh dear oh dear
hilarious. and for the very bright ones who feel compelled to point out the success of google as a free service, i'd like to suggest that wireless users generally avoid ad-based content like it's the plague. oh wait that would be most consumers. and google really is a little (a lot!) different than good old broadcast television and FM radio, both of which make money mostly from advertising revenue. for example, companies pay google to place their info ...
oh dear oh dear
now some lucky company doesn't get to offer free service to the customers! it doesn't surprise me that the FCC (read: unnecessary governement interference) expects FOR PROFIT companies to give away free service to consumers, but if any of the companies i invest do, to be sure i'll take my money elseware. i would be appalled by the idea, if i thought that any company with the resources to make this work would be dumb enough to gor ...
Re: Jumping Ship
kudos on th my circle thing...
regarding ringtones, i have had verizon service for a few years (had alltel from 02-06). on most of my verizon phones (except my moto razr) i can use my own rigntones. there is a way that any consumer can use them for most samsungs and lg's ( for example, the 8300, env, env2, voyager, alias, all smart phones) if you send ringtones from u pc to phone as pic message, via email, u can ...
Re: And...
ok i'll give you the razr2. maybe some of the newest aren't so bad...i was pretty tired when i wrote that little rant last nite  acutally , the rizr hasn't ben that bad either. except i see a lot of them come back to our store with the buttons coming unglued /;| odd. i will maintain thought that the krazr and razr v3m are/were terrible phones. the v3c wasn't that bad...they ruined it with the v3m. i'm basing ...
Re: And...
not only get old, but how about selling a phone b/c it is thin rather than b/c it is good? prolly points to a change in managment, but startac= best phone ever made, and how about the e815? i still hear people say E815 is their favorite phone ever, and it still gets great reviews. Oh, the razr...ya, moto sold like a bazillion of them...terrible phone. we replace more razrs than we sell. also krazr even worse than razr! ...

Sprint Speed, welcome to the jungle
chill out
people like them (us) are not the reason sprint is in the shape they are in. there are various, serious business reasons for that. don't be so sensitive.
me thinks he doth protest too much
gonna stick my neck out...
...and be the bad guy here. “For other consumers — particularly rural ones — these exclusivity arrangements prevent them from purchasing many of today’s most popular handsets because they reside in areas not served by the one carrier offering the desired handset.†see link below
i'm going to go with the carriers on this one. how is not being able to have a certain phone even a fairness issue at all? i mean, are folks in africa gonna start ...
Re: Can other companies block text?
VZW has blocked txt for years
Re: money
as a great an idea as a public safety network would be, it just doesn't seem practical to me. private companies don't want it b/c there is litle if any money to behad, and lets face it, shareholders want their retirement nestegg, (i do!i mean who doesn't want their 401k or roth IRA to grow?) therefore private companies aren't likely to risk their assets. and a governement subsidized telecom network would be dismal at best and the inefficiency would ...
Re: In All Honesty
this would make the most sense...especially inlight of all the pissing and moaning the FCC has done recently about how no new carriers rose to the top in their action (still annoyed that they expected the little guys to outbid the top guys :x ) they won't want another domestic carrier absorbing Sprextel. truly, we probably shoulden't either b/c it could stifle competition. i say bring in the chinese and let them introduce some bind blowing technology that will ...
Re: It is Sprint's fault, but in a different way...
very interesting, never thought of that. it does make one wonder why they would buck the conventional wisdom of not offering contracts to credit risks...conventional wisdom *usually* exists for a reason!
Re: wah wah , the customers!
you're right on point though !
Re: wah wah , the customers!
no worries! 8)
wah wah , the customers!
ok, every company has it's share of whiney, rude, IGNORANT customers, and most of us here work for one company or the other, so we can agree on that easy enough. However, i can't beleive that it's mostly the customers fault when you're losing like a million of them. unless your company just appeals to the ignorant...
Re: They had it coming for a long time
att couldn't buy tmobile if they wanted to with cherries on top. TMobile is owned by Deutsch telkom, one of the biggest friggin wirelines in europe, and they would not sell Tmobile in a million years
Re: Verizon
hey "youareretarded" take your own name!
vzw's pearls and curves both have 3G EVDO (with a bigger 3g footprint than sprextel by the way)and the 2Mp camera to. so what the hell are you even talking about?! /;|
Re: money
they'll pay for the auction by selling services that use those frequencies...it'll pay for itself pretty quickly. in the 700 Mghz band, you can blast broadband into a fallout bunker! business's espcially will line up to have access t that, as well as cosumers
Re: Glyde or Curve for non-internet users?
agree w/ alltelhub. having played with both curve and glyde from VZW, will say that curve is the way to go. if ur willing to fork out 29.99 a month for unl. 3g internet/email access, which i currenty do on a pearl. for me, it is bigtime worth it! better camera, better MP3 player, better apps, easier to txt. UR not going to be modding the glyde, i can tell you that much. the curve will be significantly more ...
what should we expect fro LTE?
if this is half way between standard HSPA and LTE at 10Mbps, then does that mean the LTE will be that much faster? i havne't really looked a whole lot at LTE yet, but i know that it is being strongly considered for 4G networks in the US within the next year or so
Re: Not what I expected, Any questions?
the keyboard is very croweded, especially if you're used to an Env or blackberry or something like that. no room for UR thumbs
Re: "Heavily Modified for Verizon" Say goodbye to 3/4 of the features.
Tmobster, have you ever been happy or positive about anything a day in your life? the fact that verizon allowed an outside UI at all is close to amazing, so they modified it to fit their programs is no big deal! everyone always complains that VZW always crippples phones, and now with this one when it's not just the standard UI you still cmplain?! get a life
Re: Available in most stores
this is not true anywhere in ohio either. my store does not even have any in stock yet, nor do any in north west ohio /;|
may be necessary for sprint to stay afloat...
http://www.rcrnews.com/apps/pbcs.dll/article? AID=/20080502/FREE/61994528/1003/FREE
eith er way this is a much bigger deal than most of us think...sprint is going nowhere without a buyout, since so one is going to invest in them anymore. mutual funds that hold this stock are going to bail, and no new investors will buy shares...not a good sign for a publicly traded company. any thoughts?
maybe not a merger
maybe TM isn't planning to merge the companies, at least not right away, like Sprextel did...maybe TM would acquire them, fix the bugs in the company, consolidate the various nework technologies and then merge into one company down the road.
also, any one else find it funny that TMobster isn't in here shoutin and screaming yet?
Re: What?
anyone interested in some concrete info re: spectrum caps should check out this article:

on a side note, there's nothing i hate more than self-righteous governement agencies that interfer with the "free market"...not so free after all.
Re: read the article phonescoop linked to
right, the article is poorly worded, but apparently helio is the first to offer push gmail.... see also http://gizmodo.com/383301/helio-becomes-first -carrier-to-offer-push-gmail
read the article phonescoop linked to
'Helio is the first operator Google is offering this to, though our Google rep couldn’t be reached to say how long the exclusivity will last.'
phonescoop's phrasing is misleading for sure, but i think (hope) they mean that helio is the first to offer push email for gmail
Re: Corporate Greed and Lawsuits...America's Two Favorite Past Times. lol
VZW is NOT selling stock, their parent company, verizon communications (wireline) is. VZW is privatly owned. i mean with facts being facts and all, i figured we should get a few simples ones straight. selling stock to raise capital is hardly the same thing as what sprint is going thru.
Re: FCC isn't the only one in remorse over VZW & ATT's winnings
exactly. another thing too is that prices have dropped significantly over the past few years, especially in terms of data prices. did T Mobster even see the two articles on the front page about how VZW dropped some prices on their data and messaging? Companies are not going to just give away services for pennies on the dollar especially not when you have ATT beefing up their 3G and Sprint spending so much trying to get wimax going.
