FCC isn't the only one in remorse over VZW & ATT's winnings

Alot of people I talk to say they still wish someone like Google or a new name would pop up in the wireless industry. I'd prefer a GSM network with 3 or 4G technology. The competition would help bring down prices of cell service even more. VZW & ATT are like big babies who don't want to share with anyone but don't want to play fair either. They want to keep everything on lock down to their tenure.

See phonescoop article stating google just drove the price up to be a pain in the ass for Verizon and ATT.

Let's look at this from another field's perspective. Let's say you have to have surgery, and it's a new kind of surgery that's hardly been done before. Who do you want perfoming the operation, one of the leading surgeons in the country or some guy who just got his medical degree online? Not that there can't ever be another contender in the wireless industry but it's pretty unlikely.

So now let's petition Verizon to come up with its own internet search engine to rival Google.

seriously, in an auction, the company(s) with the most money, and who are willing to spend that money will generally win. and saying that mainline companies "don't want to share with anyone" is not really true or accurate; Open Access initiatives are becoming a very important part of the larger carriers future plans. and frankly it's pretty unrealistic for the House of Reps HTC to be dismayed that these large companies won...did they not expect them to dish out the money for such an awesome opportunity?!

yeah, if they wanted a smaller company or a new wireless carrier to emerge they could have blocked verizon and att from the auction. but we all know how well that worked in the early days of wireless.

exactly. another thing too is that prices have dropped significantly over the past few years, especially in terms of data prices. did T Mobster even see the two articles on the front page about how VZW dropped some prices on their data and messaging? Companies are not going to just give away services for pennies on the dollar especially not when you have ATT beefing up their 3G and Sprint spending so much trying to get wimax going.

No, the House Telecommunications Subcommittee is right to be concerned. AT&T & VZW are unnecessarily hoarding disturbing amounts of spectrum (a public resource) in order to stymie competition. To use but one example, someone recently asked me to list AT&T & VZW spectrum holdings in the Palm Bay-Melbourne-Titusville, FL MSA. AT&T & VZW now hold all of the following licenses:

AT&T:

Cellular A-side 25 MHz
Cellular B-side 25 MHz
PCS E 10 MHz
PCS F 10 MHz
AWS C 10 MHz
Lower 700 MHz B 12 MHz
Lower 700 MHz C 12 MHz

Total: 104 MHz

VZW:

PCS B 30 MHz
AWS F 20 MHz
Lower 700 MHz A 12 MHz
Upper 700 MHz C 22 MHz

Total: 84 MHz

Does anyone honestly believe that AT&T & VZW can or will make efficient use of 104 MHz & 84 MHz li...

Yeah its called call/Data capacity, and having enough spectrum to hold you as major player for years to come, its called staaying ahead. That spectrum is a gold mine. They could alway change the technology for that spectrum to keep up with any future threats againts their wireless dominance.

I don't know why they didn't put in a clause to force the winning bidders to ante up enough to pay for the block. So, if you won 'C' block, you'd have to kick in an extra 1 billion to help defray the other block if no one hit the minimum bid. But then again, I'm just some lump and they're smarter than me and figured that out, right??

It is perfectly okay to do so. They where givin permission to participate, they fullfilled the deposit, they bid just like everyone else, and they won the auction, I see no unfairness in this. Only bidders with enough operating cash flow could have won and could have done anything signifcant with the spectrum.

If the HTC wants a PUBLIC Safety Network, why don't they build it with PUBLIC funds? Could it be that they'd rather tax people through extra wireless fees rather than go on record as voting for an increase, themselves?
