FCC Taken to Task Over Auction Failings

Despite bringing in $19 billion for the federal government, the House Telecommunications Subcommittee (HTS) voiced disappointment over the FCC's inability to sell the D block of spectrum during the recent 700 MHz auction. The 10 MHz portion of unsold spectrum covers the entire country and lawmakers were hoping it would be used to create a national public safety network. The HTS also expressed dismay that the auction winners--AT&T and Verizon Wireless--were the already dominant incumbent players and not new competitors. The FCC and the HTS are discussing how the D block should be re-auctioned off, but have yet to settle on any new conditions.

FCC isn't the only one in remorse over VZW & ATT's winnings

Alot of people I talk to say they still wish someone like Google or a new name would pop up in the wireless industry. I'd prefer a GSM network with 3 or 4G technology. The competition would help bring down prices of cell service even more. VZW & ATT are like big babies who don't want to share with anyone but don't want to play fair either. They want to keep everything on lock down to their tenure.
play fair? last time I checked, they are in the business of making money ... not NGOs that give charity.

socialist.
See phonescoop article stating google just drove the price up to be a pain in the ass for Verizon and ATT.

Let's look at this from another field's perspective. Let's say you have to have surgery, and it's a new kind of surgery that's hardly been d...

No, the House Telecommunications Subcommittee is right to be concerned. AT&T & VZW are unnecessarily hoarding disturbing amounts of spectrum (a public resource) in order to stymie competition. To use but one example, someone recently asked me to lis...

I don't know why they didn't put in a clause to force the winning bidders to ante up enough to pay for the block. So, if you won 'C' block, you'd have to kick in an extra 1 billion to help defray the other block if no one hit the minimum bid. But the...

If the HTC wants a PUBLIC Safety Network, why don't they build it with PUBLIC funds? Could it be that they'd rather tax people through extra wireless fees rather than go on record as voting for an increase, themselves?

Why are they crying about

verizon and att being the dominant players? yeah duh! Did they really think google was trying to win?
It doesn't matter if google was trying to win or not, point is the big dawgs where going to win that spectrum regaurdless of any body else.
Google bidding for the spectrum was not even a significant worry for VZW or ATT. The real thing here is VZW di...
