Verizon Wireless did not comment on this issue. Ivan Seidenberg, CEO of Verizon Communications did. Probably based on the impact to FiOS.

Yes, absolutely. Most consumers don't think of Bluetooth beyond hands-free, which is unfortunate. I cannot stand people who refer to their earpiece as "a bluetooth". This tool should create awareness of other uses for Bluetooth as well as compatibility info and setup instructions. Personally I think its a great idea.

Be careful with that wording. This hasn't actually launched from the cellular perspective. PC Rhapsody & Urge users can begin logging into both services immediately o the PC, but there is no immediate change to Vcast Music. Should be later this year that Vcast Music will be impacted and content can move both ways. All VZW has committed to thus far will be an auto copy of Vcast songs available through your rhapsody account and ...

They are both "made for tv viewing", hence the reason they are "TV" enabled models. In fact, I would much prefer the samsungs form factor. With 5.0 there was a window during which one could upgrade at no charge on certain devices. I know this was the case with the i730 on VZW, I assume other carriers/phones did something similar.

Anyone else? I am a VZW employee. I love my job and the company I work for. I started entry level and have worked my ass off and been rewarded for it. This is my career now, and I am now in a relatively high position with no intention of leaving or "cheating". I am also a self admitted super-loyal Mac zealot. VZW's VZAccess manager is mac compatible (DL at www.vzam.net), as are 2 of their full PC cards, their express card, their upcoming RevA card, and most of their tetherable EVDO phones. The only pain is that none of the blackberries can be tethered to a mac (but I blame RIM, talk about no mac support). As a loyal mac user and VZW employee, I may hate our music phone support decisions, but our connection support is outstanding.

Definitely a typo. If you pay the $15, all data transport is included. Without the pack, all data transport bills as minutes of use. The only time KB will get billed is on a PDA device with a pay as you go plan, and none of the PDAs support music on demand (yet, keep your eyes on the Q over the next few weeks).

For the record, the ability to buy songs sans subscription (internally called open access) has been available for about a month now on all vcast music phones, just not "official" till now... Also for the record, I argued that this should be the approach since day 1 of vcast music, but oh well...

Standard. I got to see this one a few weeks back and talk to a Samsung rep about it. He didn't seem to be aware of the flash UI whatsoever. My guess is that just like the original standard UI, the flash base will only be on LG for a while, then samsung followed by Moto about a year from now... Oh well, change takes time I suppose.

$39.99 will get you 450 peak min on America's Choice as stated previously. No big deal in making the change... if, as you said, you don''t use many minutes. 150 probably isn't much to lose since you may not have unlimited NW now and almost certainly don't have unlimited IN. Odds are good that at least 150min a month would fall under those categories. If your really not sure, call care. Any ...

The whole point of the flash UI is that the appearance can be altered, but the menu structure remains the same. Regardless of the theme, menu+left+down+ok still equals my sms inbox. Have you seen an 8500 in person and checked what theme its loaded with? My assumption is that it will have a default theme (music I imagine) but still offer the old UI and another option or 2. I agree, that was a really key part of its design for me too. Again, not a dealbreaker though. Now I'm on the fence for this one or the Samsung 990 due out soon as well... The 990 has wicked tech, but I think I might be in the market for a slick design. We'll see...

"Verizon copies everyone" has got to one of the dummest things ever argued on this site... For one of these huge companies to "copy" one another would indicate that the technology or idea was theirs to begin with. May 23, 2006, 8:29 AM
in the LG VX-8300 forum

The difficulty lies in the "on-phone" data products that people expect to bill airtime, such as MMS/GIN/WAP. System limitations don't like to deal with multiple billing methods for a data connection. If we had pay as you go by KB for tethered access, it would also bill you KB for mobile web surfing or the download of a game. This is why pay as you go on the PDA devices is such a bad idea, the average user ...

May 23, 2006, 8:09 AM

You do NOT have to have a data plan to get NE2. You price plan must simply be above $34.99. 25% off full retail is an area program, not available nationwide. It is also specifically for lost/stolen phones. From an internal perspective I'd rather people didn't abuse it...

May 23, 2006, 8:06 AM
in the Article: Verizon Q Dates and Pricing Now Official forum

It'll be dependent on a contract, but traditionally you do not have to have a data plan to qualify for a rebate. By the by, those of you who seem offended by unlimited data plans, be very careful before you go slapping pay as you go on this thing. Data devices do NOT get billed airtime for 1X/EVDO use. Pay as you go means $0.015/KB, which builds up pretty quick. That will include not only internet access, ...

Re: Price for Existing Customers
May 23, 2006, 7:58 AM
in the Article: Verizon Q Dates and Pricing Now Official forum

Correct. You can combine NE2 and rebates. The only exception is when that would bring the price of the phone to below $0. In that situation you get only enough off the phone to make it free. Clearly that is not the situation w/ the Q. Combine away.

Re: Price for Existing Customers
May 22, 2006, 5:45 PM

$419.99 is national full retail. That can vary per area. The 2year $199.99 will be after a $100 rebate. Note that rebates do not apply to full retail. Rebates will likely be instant online and mail in through any other channel.

Not full OBEX. For Vcards only. Bluetooth DUN is present, for the tethered EVDO product now available. Flash interface is 2 themes built in (callled Pulse and Silver Spin). No evidence that there will be the ability to add more by any means, though I do assume a Get It Now app is likely. No internal mention of A2DP for bluetooth music playback. The LG 8300 is on its way to VZW. Not a whole lot different from 8100, but will support object transfer for vcards only. Hence, partial OBEX. Oh, and DUN is enabled too. Oh again, and the new flash based interface will be present. Enjoy.

Well said. Much more detailed than my pathetic attempt at an explanation... This is the first i have ever heard that the phone would receive any direct reading from the satellites however... I'm not sure how the phone is capable of this as it does not operate in the same frequency band as the GPS signals from the satellite. The Merits program is available only in VZWs Midwest area (OH, MI, IL, etc) and is available to you based on your price plan and length of service. If you qualify, you will get a mailer. It does give you earlier upgrade (discounted) pricing, among other things, but will likely do you little good as this phone is likely a ways off. I would guess Q4 at earliest.

All VZW LBS includes a privacy management app that allows a user to always provide their location, or only when they want to allow it. I would assume that sprint will also have something like this for its paranoid adult customers. By the way, does sprint currently have a "kid phone" like the Migo or the Firefly? Thats clearly the target for these services...

Its not true GPS in the traditional sense. Not direct to satellite, it uses the same triangulation via cell site that e911 GPS uses. Not as dependent on line of site, but does require cell signal. Same idea as all other LBS on the market, Nextel & VZW both have turn by turn direction apps that use the same system. VZW will be launching their version of this locator service very soon, and I think ...
