I wonder if we will be able to find a way to turn off EVDO and teather using the old 1x slower method, but without having to pay that extra $80 a month for the occassional need.

$60 for unlimited. but either way that does blow, i wish they would come out with a per day rate or a kilobyte rate for the occasional need.

It is a per day price you can use it for $1 per day just cancel it when your ready and reactivate when you need it they will charge you just for the days used, its not like you are locked in a yearly contract, just like evdo $15 a month gets divided to the days you use it.

yeah i see your point, it would be two dollars though not $1. That is annoying though to have to call and add it then call and cancel it, I would just like to have it so if i ever needed i could just hook it up for awhile hassle free and pay per minute/kilobyte/day/whatever without having a feature code added by calling 1-800#

The difficulty lies in the "on-phone" data products that people expect to bill airtime, such as MMS/GIN/WAP. System limitations don't like to deal with multiple billing methods for a data connection.

If we had pay as you go by KB for tethered access, it would also bill you KB for mobile web surfing or the download of a game. This is why pay as you go on the PDA devices is such a bad idea, the average user has no idea how quickly those charges will accumulate.

I imagine a daily option will likely be available in the near future, as we are already offering this on the new EVDO built-in laptops from HP, Dell etc.

If they did offer something more reasonable, then a lot of us would have no problem paying for it when we needed it, such as sitting in an airport terminal trying to find a new flight. Instead, if we need that option a few times a year, we either end up paying over $700 a year right now, or else hack the system instead. My feeling is that it is the greed of Verizon that is pushing more people to hack the system, instead of just purchase what they need instead of what VZ trys to force down their throats. I have no use at all for VCast or Get It Now or a $60 per month tethering plan. I do have a real need for an occasional internet connection to my laptop. So do an awful lot of business travelers. The older $15 a month option that included Txt...
