Welcome!

Welcome to the new Wireless Data forum! πŸ™‚

This is a place for discussing nearly all things to do with wireless data. This includes laptop data cards (PC cards), data via Bluetooth (or infrared), "tethering" your laptop to your phone via a USB or serial cable, and M2M (machine-to-machine) issues.

Will the HTC 6700 have blue tooth tethering so I cna link it to my laptop?

OK- so I am in Verizon about to buy the 6600 for the EVDO about 3 months ago. I am tlakign to a salesperson, and he tells me there are two plans for evdo- the "laptop" plan and the pda plan. I explain to him tht I want the laptop plan. He says that I can't put the laptop plan on the pda phone. I tell him that I want to bluetooth my pda occassionally to my laptop, but mostly I want ot just use the pda by itself, and I am willing ot pay the extra money for the laptop plan so Ican do that. He says Verizon won't allow that. Am I wrong in thinking that is idiotic? I want to PAY MORE for the higher plan so I can have INCREASED FUNCTIONALITY with the device.

Anyway- will the Sprint 6700 allow tethering? I would really like to use it oc...

Nokia 6230 and Ipaq 3835 connectivity

Just upgraded phones to a Nokia 6230 thru Cingular with bluetooth and infrared. The old Ipaq 3835 has served me well but I have nothing on it other than what came from the factory (no expansion sleeves, etc.). I previously had a Motorola V60i and used a cable (from Gomadic) to connect the Ipaq to the cell phone.

With the new phone, I thought it would be easier that this to connect via infrared (sending files, etc. works fine). When trying to establish a connection, the 6230 display reads "Connecting to GPRS" and then "Subscribe to GPRS first" before it disconnects. I assume this means there is another subcription level I have to pay for. If so, I might as well invest in the bluetooth card for the Ipaq so I won't have to maintain 'line ...

Bluetooth phone support for Palm device.

What Bluetooth profiles need to be present and activated for a Palm device to then discover the phone; pair with it; and then use the phone as a modem to take advantage of the phone’s broadband access?

Thanx.

Bluetooth File Transfer Help.

I own a Motorola V3 RAZR, and for some reason I can only transfer (via bluetooth USB connected to my computer) images from my computer to the phone. I have a collection of tones for the phone that are in .AMR format which I reckon the phone should read, but when I select any of them to be transfered to my phone, it pops up an error in the transfer. Same happens if I want to transfer any MP3, MIDI, WAVs, etc... or games specially designed for the phone, for that matter.

Do I have to activate anything on the phone in order to recieve any other files apart from images? Maybe some way to set up said trasnfer?

I appreciate the help!

Maximo.

Toyota Prius and Bluetooth

Part of the reason I bought a new Toyota Prius was the promise of hands free telephone use while driving. Now on my second phone (I learned the hard way the Verizon limits bluetooth service) I'm told by the salesman at Cingular that each and every one of my 147 address book entries must be uploaded into the Prius individually through a process of about a dozen keystrokes. Can this be true? Are there any shortcuts? Need one upload an address to use the voice dial function? Where might one go for more complete support of this system? Niether Prius nor wireless providers seem to have much information. Currently using a Motorola V551 GSM powered by Cingular. Any input appreciated! Thanks!

Need phone that can run Java applet

I need a phone and service that can let me access a web page on the internet and run a specific java applet.
Any recommendation as to what environment/phone/service is best suited for this. All the other features are secondary to this.
I am not sure if for instance offering from Verizon with the samsung SCH=i730 or the Audiovox XV6000 would let me do this.
Thanks

Do EDGE speeds vary by region?

I notice I get a slower signal at home that other places aroung. Here I get about 80-100kps with a full signal
other places about 115kps. Is this the norm?

Comparison of data standards?

Has anyone done some real-world testing to compare the various data standards (1xRTT, EV-DO, EDGE, etc.) out there? pcmag has a good description of theoretical speeds at http://www.pcmag.com/article2/0,1895,1770835, 00.asp, but I haven't found any reviews or comments on what speeds people are actually getting.

For the record, I'm currently on Cingular with a Sony-Ericsson T616. The mobile speed test from broabandreports.com reports a pretty consistent 20kbps down speed. I don't have an upload speed to report at this time.

And yes, I'm in the market for the "perfect" phone/modem combination, made only slightly harder because I'm using a mac powerbook and Linux.

Mobile Content Growing, Expected to Soar

"Faster carrier networks, flashier handsets and consumer interest are just three of the factors contributing to the growth in mobile content. Games, music, news headlines and driving directions are common examples of the mobile content consumers are accessing via their wireless devices. As carriers continue to upgrade their wireless networks and manufacturers continue to offer devices with more functionality, consumers can expect more start-up companies offering a wide-variety of mobile content. While the use of mobile content is currently greater in Asia and Europe, the U.S. market is growing rapidly with analysts expecting sales of mobile data to reach $8.4 billion in 2006. (Source: The Wall Street Journal)"

BlueTooth earbud with or without boom mike?

How strong for picking up your voice are those BlueTooth earbuds? I see that there are earbuds and then there are earbuds with boom mikes. It seems odd to me that a little mike in your ear can pick up voice waves that are emanating from your mouth, which is in front of your ear. Isn't it more likely that an earbud with a boom would pick up your voice more effectively? I don't care how it looks if it picks up my voice better.

PS: If earbuds without mikes were truly equally good, Britney Spears would not use a boom mike.

Is GPRS 10 actually EDGE?

Looking at the Motorola V3 RAZR I see that the data transmission specs say that it is a GPRS 10 device. Another well respected source has said that this is equivalent to EDGE. I know EDGE codes for three times the number of bits in the same radio channel and that is what gives it its unique broadband characteristics. I also know that the "10" in GPRS 10 indicates the number of down/up channels. So, again, an EDGE device with the same number of channels as a GPRS device should still transmit 3 times the data since it is using a different modulation method, correct?
