Re: You're right, Apple could be a fad

I believe the iPhone will merely be one more choice in a crowded marketplace. I don't believe it is a fad, but in a crowded marketplace of lower priced, open source options Apple could lose relevance. It had its run of being a cult phenomenon but it costs too much, is only available on 1 carrier at this time and the comptition is as good as and getting better than them all of the time. Android is the future simply ...

How do you figure it is better for the consumer? So I end my contract with AT&T with my smartphone, get it unlocked and take it to T-Mobile. I have an old smartphone with an old battery and T-Mobile is dancing in the streets because they did not have to buy me a phone. Not only that but they won't let me upgrade for 22 months. I am now 46 months with the same phone before I can get ...

Difference between corporate retail and dealers
Jul 22, 2010, 5:33 PM
in the T-Mobile forum

When T-Mobile, AT&T or Verizon offer an early upgrade it is only honored in corporate stores. As a national retail store manager it can be a bit frustrating but it is a fact of life in the industry. For that HD2 your choice is to go to WalMart and pay 499.00 for the phone or half of that at a corporate store. None of these carriers bend for dealers. With Sprint it is different because they offer a half ...

Precisely. In the 90's Sony could do no wrong. Even their Directv receiver that had a 100% failure rate was considered acceptable by the public. Other than the fact that it often did not receive a satellite signal it was a great device. Directv had to fix that one since Sony did not own up to it. Much like Apple throws AT&T under the bus whenever there is an iPhone issue. Does history repeat itself?

I agree. We do live in a litigious society. No one benefits but the trial lawyers. The Samsung Blade on Sprint had a similar issue, except that the antenna was covered by an aluminum case. (How'd that get past QC?) What is unfortunate is the Apple response. Offer to fix the problem, apologize and take your lumps.

iZombies is harsh. There are Ford men and Chevy men, iPhone people and Android people. I will admit that people's veneration of Apple is not deserved but it is a great device. Apple is not a good corporate citizen but their brand is hot. It will not always be this way. Hot brands are like tides, they come and go. Some last longer than others. Eventually they succumb to competition, mistakes that they make (like Sony) or the public ...

Android phones are now selling at a higher rate than iPhones. There will be a spike when the iPhone 4 comes out but reality is it's Apple against the rest of the industry. I sell Android AND iPhone. Why would I spit in my own soup? I was careful to say iPhone 3GS and not claim to have an iphone 4. I quoted the app which is common to both. Why this religious devotion to Apple? They are a mere manufacturer. Why do people allow a company to control their entire experience with the product. it makes no sense. Isn't open source better than being controlled?

Why is there such an assumption that everyone wants an iPhone? Android is not an iPhone wanna be it is a great standard in itself. We put the 3GS next to the Evo running a game app that is common to Android and the iPhone (LineUp) The Evo's screen is much more responsive than the iPhone's. Why does Apple not build efficiencies into their devices? The problem is not AT&T, they have way more 3G bandwidth than anyone else. But the iPhone does not even attempt to be network friendly. And the market does decide. Consider AT&T, the former company not SBC renamed and rebranded. They became stagnant and lost incredible amounts of market share to competitors who provided a better product at a better price. The same could happen to Verizon, AT&T, Sprint and T-Mobile. The consuming public is not a bunch of idiots. They are loyal to a service provider only as long as that provider is loyal to them. There are two types of telecom companies, ...

Somehow I sense either a misunderstanding or a distrust of a market driven economy. If something is as unpopular with consumers as you appear to believe contracts are then someone would offer a popular alternative and the rest of the market would follow in order to keep their customer base. The reality is that the industry could not afford to grow and expand without the contracts. Without this financial model we would probably still be using either analog or ...

Re: SMH

Giving the FCC power over contracts could undermine the entire economic system. (See Dartmouth college v New Hampshire) Just because it is unpopular does not mean it should be regulated by the government. If it was as unpopular as you make it seem then it would not be economically sustainable and the carriers would change their approach. If you don't want to sign a contract you can go with a no contract option which every carrier offers.

The sales training is actually quite good, it borrows a lot from Carnegie in its process. The real problem is that often you get an arrogant associate who is really a rotten salesperson but thinks they are God's gift because they can manipulate their customers into buying. Absolutely. They also don't have the bandwidth limitations that the others will incur in the 700mhz band. LTE will have a bit better range from tower due to the frequency and it will penetrate structures better but that can be handled with more towers. I believe Sprint is being very customer centric with this. Much will depend on what applications become available and how they interface with customer lifestyles.

Oh but it is the EU. They are a socialist block that must bless everything that comes out. They absolutely outlawed CDMA (with heavy lobbying by infrastructure manufacturers) and they insisted that the 4G network be designed in Europe. It is all about protecting the home industries and then insist that the rest of the world bow to their wireless wisdom. Don't you remember what a fiasco the initial rollout of UMTS was? Why would Clear switch to LTE? WIMAX is performing very well. The partnerships also have deeper pockets than those of the LTE group. LTE shows that the EU and especially Ericsson will never support any standard not created in Europe. Even though WIMAX can be deployed very cost effectively they require a homegrown solution and insist that the world agree with them. I believe this is very short sighted.

AT&T has intalled HSPA on most if not all of its 3G network. It is very reliable but the data throughputs on their network are maxed out due to the fact that there are 30-40 million iPhones constantly using data services. This much usage was never envisioned by anyone. T-Mobile is in the process of rolling out HSPA+ which is providing up to 6mbps average speeds in Philly.
