The UMTS/HSDPA market is the CDMA market.
Qualcomm has been active in all CDMA markets for a long time. Their success is what caused Nokia to sue QCOM earlier this year. Since Nokia and the other sewers could not beat QCOM in the marketplace, they tried to beat them in court.

My Q has a much faster reaction time than the Samsung i600 which it replaced. This may be slower than some handsets. EV-DO connected right out of the box.

Everyone posting here seems to think that WiMAX will only succeed if it is adopted by one of the major cellular companies. I would question why they would need to be involved? To install infrastructure? Why?
WiFi is a success because people use it. WiMAX will be a success for the same reason.

They are talking cradles, not only the connector. Whatever connector they choose, there will need to be a standard geometry for a cradle mount.

Have you tested UMTS uplinks at this speed with highly compressed files?
UMTS is an asymetrical system, just like GPRS, EDGE and EV-DO. The DSL Reports' archives give UMTS average uplinks speeds below 100 kbps.
I have gotten nearly 384 kbps downlink speeds using a UMTS phone on a UMTS network where I was the sole user, but the uplink was much lower. This was downloading MP3 files, thus compression did not effect the results.

Try it with MP3 files and see if you get the same data rate.

It depends on how you test. There is no international standard for testing wireless data speeds. Many overblown data tests (like over 200 kbps using 1xRTT) include the effects of compression on the transfer speed. As a result, they could be 2 or 3 times the actual data transfer speed.
DSL Reports uses MP3 files (up to 600 kb) which are almost incompressible. You could also use an FTP site and measure the transfer speed. These sorts of tests will ...

I have tested my own hardware and have actually gotten 144 kbps using 1xRTT. This was under unusual circumstances, but it was possible for consumers to acheive this. I routinely get better than 100 kbps.
The UNMTS hype of 2 mpbs has never been reached by consumers. In fact, even 384 kbps is as rarely acheived as 144 kbps on 1xRTT.

ACtually, 1xRTT DOES support 144 kbps. The conditions need to be right for this, just like UMTS supporting 384 kbps. It is possible, but there can not be many other users connected to the same tower.
The HSDPA uplink of 40 - 60 kbps is not as good as 1xRTT or EV-DO. This is only a little better than GPRS. Remember that 1xRTT is symetrical (the uplink and downlink are similar). EV-DO Rev 0, UMTS, and HSDPA are asymetrical (the ...

Believe what you like. The people who promised 2.4 mpbs for UMTS, 500+ kbps for EDGE, and 144 kbps for GPRS are the same folks who are promising 14 mbps for HSDPA. Their real world performance has considerably lagged their initial hype.
What is wrong with HSDPA delivering 2 mbps? This is much better than UMTS at 384 kbps. In other words, why tempt us with perfomance promises which will not be met in the real world?

If the 6 cry babies spent their money on R&D, they might be able to come up with a better product which would beat Qualcomm. They have not done it.
If Qualcomm were abusing the marketplace, then there would be a golden opoortunity for someone else to come in and take the market away.

NO one is forcing anyone to by Qualcomm IP. People buy it because it is better.

If the EU courts invalidate IP protection (QCOM's patents), it would be an unmitigated disaster. This would be catastrophic for EU companies.
Without IP protection in the EU, what company would do R&D?

Corporations are owned by their shareholders. The shareholders demand that the companies make money, consequently the R&D expenses must be paid for by customers. If this does not happen, the companies cease to exist.
AT&T is a red herring. They had some of the best R&D combined with some of the worst execution. Comaparing AT&T to QCOM is like trying to compare a snail to a dolphin.

All of the complainers are chip makers, not pure handset makers. They are all getting their butts kicked in the chip market place by QCOM.
If this were really a licensing issue, then why are their no pure handset makers involved?
This is a way that the market losers believe they can defeat the winner.

With the improvements in compression algorithms since EVRC came out, there is no reason to decrease voice quality.
After travelling to many counries and using digital networks, I believe that the CODEC is only one factor (and a minor one) in voice quality. The handsets' amplifiers and speakers have a lot to do with voice quality. System congestion is a major factor in voice quality.
The CODEC used in TDMA (IS-136) is, IMHO, pretty awful. I do not ...

GSM only countries are the exception, not the rule in East and SE Asia.
You can most likely have NAM 2 set up for local service.

Samsung, Motorola, LG, Cyon, HanHwa, Kyocera, HTC, HuaWei, QuiaoXing and others use QCOM chipsets, but they design and build their own phones. Nokia uses TI chipsets but Nokia designs and builds their own phones.

Local service whether by pre-paid or post-paid is almost ALWAYS cheaper than roaming, the technology has nothing to do with this.
Bring your D2 SIM over here to Taichung and tell me how cheap it is to roam. I will wager a dinner at my favorite restautant in Taipei that my VZW roaming charges are lower ...

My Verizon phone is unlocked and I have set it up elsewhere for local service.
Remember that the oft stated advantage of having all your phone numbers on your SIM card is negated by using local pre-paids. (Oops, all my phone numbers are on the other SIM)

You can always have multiple numbers. I do.
Roaming is all about convenience. You pay for that convenience. The cheapest route is almost never the most convenient.

Unfortunately, US cell phone companies chose to use European roaming costs as a basis for roaming charges. Roaming with US carriers is expensive.

The lack of replies may be because the GSM club lacks a fast uplink.
1xRTT generally has a faster uplink (I get 45 to 120 kbps) than UMTS (max 64 kbps).

If you want to roam, it is expensive. Look at the GSM international roaming rates for the European operators.
My GSM provider (FET Taiwan) has low roaming rates in East Asia, but it is more in the US and Europe than VZW is charging.
