Industry Giants Square Off Against Qualcomm Over 3G Patents
Let's get ready to Rummbbbbblllllleeeeee
the thing what i dont understand is, why are there lawsuits about monopolies and things of that nature when that company has patents. its basically like saying patents dont count for anything and you cant do anything you want with your patents.
makes no sense.
If they said "we're gonna hold our 3G patents sacred, and charge whatever we want to whomever we want" that 3G standard wouldn't have been ratified and network/handset manufacturers would have looked elswhere for 3G
my point was that when the governement issues patents, they punish companies who have a monopoly with these antri-trust situations. that was my point. it isnt their fault they got so big and powerful.

unfort, they can do whatever they want to do that is business, but if they did agree on something and it is proven then that is a differernt story..

You completely missed the point of his post. Again.

i disagree. without qualcomm, it will be difficult to come up with new products especially when qcom has tons of patents on my applications and that they have a huge R&D spending budget. perhaps they should look into TXN (texas instruments) also, becuase they are a monopoloy in the gsm area also.

It wouldn't make any sense to you. Competition breeds innovation. I'm sure Qualcomm is doing their level best to keep other companie...

If the EU courts invalidate IP protection (QCOM's patents), it would be an unmitigated disaster. This would be catastrophic for EU companies.
Without IP protection in the EU, what company would do R&D?

Think of what might happen if the complainers prevail.

I think patents are integral to companies and people protecting their investments and intellectual properties. But if you go about abusing the marketplace using said patents as a shield, you may suffer the consequence of governmental interference.

That's a good way to put it. Qualcomm is in a position to try and ruin the industry or build it up. Let's hope Qualcomm helps build up the industry.
If Qualcomm were abusing the marketplace, then there would be a golden opoortunity for someone else to come in and take the market away.
