wcdma has always had a limited uplink, 128kbps max to be exact. these speeds should have been expected all along. It should also come as no surprise that the downlink isn't going to support the overhyped speeds of 3.2mbps, 6.4mbps, 9.6mbps, 12.8mbps, or 14.4mbps.

umts' limited uplink speed is 384 Kbps max, not 128 K. 128 may be what average throughput amounts to.

Acutally UMTS (aka wCDMA) has a 128 kbps uplink. I think you may be referring to the upgrade 'HSDPA' which may have a higher uplink (and definately downlink).

UMTS uplink speeds are 384kbps. I'm not sure where you're getting your information but HSDPA doesn't improve the uplink of UMTS at all. Faster uplink speeds will only come after the HSUPA (the U is for uplink) software upgrade.

UMTS is an asymetrical system, just like GPRS, EDGE and EV-DO. The DSL Reports' archives give UMTS average uplinks speeds below 100 kbps.
I have gotten nearly 384 kbps downlink speeds using a UMTS phone on a UMTS network where I was the sole user, but the uplink was much lower. This was downloading MP3 files, thus compression did not effect the results.
