I thought the GSM companies of Europe have been bragging about how much more ADVANCED they are than the American Companies???

Why would they need to buy our technology? And our CDMA technology at that?

Why don't they make WGSM??

Here's the deal.
According to a huge legal battle between Qualcomm and Ericsson, Ericsson claimed it invented wcdma. Qualcomm claimed they did. The courts decided that they both did and awarded several patents to both companies. Other companies like Nokia and Tex Inst also own many wcdma patents but appaently not the "core" patents.
Ericsson, Nokia and the other Euro companies just trade the licenses to each other for the most part and ...

All of the complainers are chip makers, not pure handset makers. They are all getting their butts kicked in the chip market place by QCOM.

If this were really a licensing issue, then why are their no pure handset makers involved?

This is a way that the market losers believe they can defeat the winner.

I think originally it was a joint venture but Sony Ericsson broke off from Sony and Ericsson to become a seperate company. At least thats how I think it went 🙄

Nokia build handsets, AND chips, AND infrastructure, AND CRTs, and many other things. There is NO pure handset maker among the cry babies.

WCDMA is NOT a version fo CDMA it is a completely different Technology. Get your facts before you post. WCMDA is the next step for GSM its also known as UMTS/HSDPA.
