CNET Review

CNET has finally gotten around to reviewing the phone. They rate it a "good" 7.3 out of 10. Check it out at

weird clock display

Sometimes when my phone has been idle for awhile or when I just turn it on the main screen and the external screen displays the time in huge black numbers on a white background. Is there a way to make it the default display?
And another question, when using a picture taken by the phone as the wallpaper is there a way to change the fitting of the picture (like stretching it to fill the screen) or changing the background colour? The blackness is bugging me -_-

Changing profiles?

Hey,

Just a quick question. Can you use the external buttons on this phone to change the profile from like outdoors to meeting or whatever?

External Display: SMS

I've read a lot of posts about people having problems with reading text messages from the External Display. I have done some research into this problem and from what I have read, the problem is actually a firmware issue with the first batch of phones! There is a date code on the back. (i.e. 04W48 -- means it was manufatured on week 48 of 2004).

Phones with this problem may also malfuntion (freeze) and display a blue screen ( reminds me of Windows 95/98 ) which can only be reset by removing the back shell and battery.

You may want to check with Cing W. to see if you can replace the phone or send it in for the firmware update.

When the phone vibrates/alerts you that a message has been received, press the (+) button on the s...

Buying phone for girlfriend, but need some help

Ok, i want to buy this phone for my girlfriend but i've never done this before. She owns a Motorola V500 and it's been giving her some problems lately. I came across the offer of 50$ for one of these and i have a CDM9900(verizon).

It seems like a nice phone,nice build,everything she needs and wants, BUT i know how complicated phones get nowadays and contracts. I'm 17 turning 18 in april and i wanted to buy her this phone for Valentines day.

Thing is, do i need a contract or sign one to buy her the phone?She said she could switch phones without changing her contract with cingular or renewing but i wasn't sure because verizon doesn't let their members do this. Can anyone answer some of my problems?thanx

Do I need a new SIM card?

Just got the Z500 over the weekend. I've been a subscriber since 1999, and I'm still using the same SIM card from my first Pac Bell Wireless phone. Is there any advantage to asking for a new SIM card, or will the old card work fine? I know the newer cards have more memory, but I don't have a large enough phonebook for that to matter.

thanks,
Greg

Not as good as you think...

PcMag.com gave this phone a rating of 2.5 (FAIR). Read their final thoughts.
I too thought this would be a great phone, but now I'm just dissapointed.

Bottom Line
~~~~~~~~~~~~
Difficult-to-press buttons make using this phone a frustrating experience, although it makes a great cut-rate USB modem for your laptop.
Pros
~~~~~~
Clear sound. Sharp camera. Insanely cheap for a fast EDGE modem.

Cons
~~~~~~
Awful keypad. Mediocre screen. Case feels cheap
Passed on the Z500, got the v505 instead.
After looking at the phone I decided not to get it. Its a nice phone but there were a few things I did not like.
1. No bluetooth. I think that was a huge mistake not including it. I use it all the time.
2. It seemed a little big. The hinge at the top is huge.
3. The screen quality seemed pretty poor. I'm not talking about its size, just its color quality and brightness. I looked at a Motorola phone aftewards and it looked so much better.
The Motorola v505 doesn't have edge, and the z500 does. However, that feature, unlike bluetooth, is not something I would use.
Anyway, this is just my two cents, I hope I don't make anyone mad around here. I think that 9 months ago this phone would have been awesome, but as of now its a litt...
Not a good exclusive for Cingular
There are about six phones that Cingular has chosen for their exclusive handsets. The Motorola v551 was a good choice, but this phone, the SE z500a was a bust. People are beginning to find out that call quality is far from par and that the screen is more than just fuzzy. If you are in the market for a "Gadget" then this might be your phone.
It's no wonder Cingular has chose Nokia, Motorola, and LG to launch the first phones the end of 2005 for it's new UMTS network. Better days are ahead for Cingular customers.
Turn off alarm w/out using menus?
Hi -
I use my phone as an alarm clock. Does anyone know if you can turn off the alarm without having to go into the alarm menu? I know you can make it "snooze" by pushing any button - but can you turn a recurring alarm off every day w/out having to navigate the menus? On my old phone I used to be able to push one button to snooze and another to turn it off for that day, but it would go off the next day at the right time w/out having to be reset.
Also - can you set more than one recurring alarm?
Thanks!!
Talk while charging??
Another question please - I dont seem to be able to talk or do anything else with the menus while the phone is charging like I could with my Siemens phone. Is this normal? All I see is the "phone charging" icon and everything else is inaccessible.
Thanks!
Setting up the Internet
😕 Ok can anyone, and i mean anyone, help me with this. I have tried for two days now to set up the internet on my z500a and frankly i am about to lose my mind. There is a section on the Sony Ericsson website that is suppose to send a text message to your phone, but i have yet to recieve one. It may be because i am suppose to enter my number in "international" format and i have no idea how to do that.
Newho, if you can help me with this, or let me know how you set up yours, i would be greatly appreciated.
