Re: I hope Google puts out Navigation for iPhone soon.
Actually AT&T/Navigon software only uses AGPS/cell towers on the majority of feature phones and many ATT smart phones.
Anyhow, Google nav will use satellites when available, GPS accuracy is a hardware/firmware attribute, not software.
Your somewhat correct with how AGSP works on AT&T. The GPS data for AT&T (Telenav) data is from the satellites, & the mapping data is being sent via the data network from the carriers. I was able to meet with Dr Bob Rennard, one of Telenav’s founders, & he explained to our group on how this works.
Also, The Verizon Blackberrys (On the Market Now) have GPS chips. Yet VZ Nav is all from Cell site GPS. So software is a big factor for the type of GPS services available.
Please note.there are currantly 2 types of GPS systems available. 1 uses the GPS Satellites provided by the US Gov. & the other uses Cell sites to triangulate GPS readings. Both have their Pros & Cons.
Also, Please remember the Droid devices are currently the only devices that can use Satellite readings for Google GPS. All other devices currently use Cell site GPS readings.
I am willing to beleive more devices will be able to use both GPS system in the near future for Google GPS.
& I agree with the $40.00 charge comparison.
Considering you can get AT&T nav for only $9.99 and cancel it at any time. Also, there are free GPS services for Iphone, but have not really proven to be very accurate.
