NE2 Discount Upgrade + $100 Credit: What is my best option?

youaremyhero

Jan 10, 2011, 10:32 PM
I am eligible for an NE2 Discount Upgrade + $100 Credit. It was effective 6/14/2010.

Right now, I can get a Droid X for free with NE2.

I would rather wait for an HTC Thunderbolt, Droid Bionic, or iPhone 4.

My questions:

-Is it worth using the discount and credit to stay with Verizon for 2 years?

-Which phone is the best?

-What would be the costs for the aforementioned phones? Will I have to pay more?

The best way to select a phone is to lay your hands on it in a Verizon store and make sure it looks, feels, and does what you want it to. That's what makes it "worth it" to renew the contract. There is no "best" phone.

🤣 🤣 🤣

Even if there were a best phone today it would be a has been tomorrow. You're asking us to compare phones which have yet to be released? Okay...

HTC Thunderbolt. Why? Because it is an HTC. If they are close in features and stats then HTC trumps Motorola all day long in my biased brain. It doesn't help that I pined for the Supersonic six months before it made its way to Sprint as the Evo. I knew when I took the 'free' Incredible from Best Buy that this was going to happen, but in the grand scheme I am not even using the Incredible to its full capability so the T-Bolt would obviously be a waste for me.

Don't worry you can use your credit if you have it (FAQ 6 under New & Existing Customer Eligibility).

However, if Verizon ends the program as reported, you won't get a new credit after 2 years.

Well, what I meant was there is no "best" phone generally speaking. The best phone for you is the one that meets your specific needs, which is why I suggested you think about what you need and go lay hands on phones in a Verizon store. That's the only way to get past the reviews and the spin. In my experience a two year upgrade cycle is a long time, so you need to make sure you make a good choice 🙂

Your right, there is a best phone for you, then someone else will like something different. Everyone looks for different features in phone.

Some people thing phones with full quarty keyboards. Personally I dislike them. So Everyone's a little different though I do under stand where you are going. I think what someone was saying is go check out the phones and get a feel for them and see what YOU like.

I just went through the same process. After waiting for all of the announcements last week, including the end of NE2 after 1/16 I went with the Droid X this weekend. It's tried, apparently highly reliable and still highly rated which is important for me.

How do you get the X for free? I only received a $100 mail in rebate. 😕 I like your deal better!

Well I was eligible for an upgrade 6/14/2010. With the discount, credit, and mail in rebate, it's free.

Yea the NE2 ends 1/16, but the discount doesn't expire. I was going to get the X, but I would rather wait. Why don't you wait? iPhone is coming out and the others will probably come out March.

Then it would still be only $100 off, unless he managed to also send in the mail in rebate, which usually doesn't work these days. And that's assuming that there was even an instant rebate at the time, as most Androids have gone to mail-in rebates online. I just ordered one for my wife, and had to send in a rebate (I haven't had to do rebates in five years).

See, that still makes no sense.

http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/store/controller? ... »

Hopefully the link works.

From the DroidX Verizon Wireless page:

Full Retail Price $569.99
2-Year Contract $299.99
Mail-in Rebate -$100.00
PRICE $199.99

Take your $100 NE2 off of that and you have $99.99. Not sure where the extra hundred bucks fell off.

I think you're assuming you get an additional $100 off on TOP of your 100 NE2 credit. This isn't the case.

How it works is:

Normal Price: $299.99
NE2 Credit: $100
Mail in rebate: $100

Your final cost? $99.99

There is NO way you can get $200 off for a New every 2 like you're claiming.

Side note, I HIGHLY doubt you'll be able to use a $100 NE2 credit on an iphone. I don't see apple allowing that, at all.

Jan 18, 2011, 11:15 AM
The DroidX right now is 299.99 with a $100 MIR. If you're seeing an instant credit, that is your NE2 credit, which drops the price to $99.

There IS no additional credit right now for that phone. If you want it, with your Ne2, it's $99 for you after you get your rebate back, unless you're looking at a site like wirefly, but they don't honor NE2 credits.

I gave up on trying to understand this a long time ago. If the OP bought the phone already, they should check the receipt to be sure of what they got. If not, they may be in for a surprise when they order the phone.

The only thing missing from all this are actual details, such as the specific web address they saw the offer on. Then we could at least look at the site and see what he or she is seeing, then analyze it for what it is.

Jan 19, 2011, 1:21 PM
In most areas, the only discount for governments would be an instant mail in rebate.

Anything higher would be the initial sale only and ONLY on corporate (government owned) accounts.

If the account is in your name, I can't see you getting just a random extra 100 credit
...
epik

Jan 19, 2011, 3:35 PM
Good point, if the account were under a large enough corporate name, under the business name instead of the user name, there might be an extra incentive during purchase. I see corporate accounts with one or two lines on them all the time, separate from the other 5,000 or more lines, but they still get the high-rate discounts. We can't touch those accounts in the corporate stores any more, unless the company has put the name of the person using the line on the company account list.

Short of looking up the order myself (which I'm not going to do), I don't know that I'll ever understand how you got an extra $100 discount on the Droid X. Seeing as how 99.9% of the rest of Droid X buyers may never get that price, you're very lucky to have scored it at that price.

In any case, enjoy the phone, it's a good one!

I went ahead and got the X last Thursday (before the "rumors" of a Tuesday announcement). At first I was thinking that I'm such a dummy, but you know, I've been using the X and I really like it a lot. And I've been so busy with other things that I don't even know most of the things I can do with this phone. Yet.

The thing about Apple (any of their products, really) that always puts me off is that it's a "closed" system. Yeah, with the GSM technology you could "jail break" it and use it on other GSM networks anywhere in the world. I don't see that happening with the the Verizon CDMA model.

So I'm thinking I'll hang with my new phone for a year or two. By the time I'm ready to get something else, the kinks should've been worked out with ...

I'm not sure if someone said this yet or not, but... You need to decide what you want and need. If you use your NE2 before midnight tonight you'll get 1 more NE2. Also the 4G devices don't even have release dates yet. My personal phone is the Droid X, and compair it to the 4G phones the only thing my phone doesn't do is the 4G part and the foward facing camera.

Sorry, that price changed on Sunday. I've been watching it every few days since before you first mentioned it (I've been waiting to see if the price drops to buy one for my wife). It was down to $149.99 just last week.

You can't claim proof following a well-tracked price reduction. It's still possible that in your area this was the price, but nationally it didn't drop to $100 until this week.

I'm not going to argue it's worth, and I'm far from the first person to defend the pricing structures used by device manufacturers. Regardless, the fact remains that these phones cost between $500 and $600 to Verizon, and when you're buying it they're paying for a substantial portion of the phone for you, in exchange for a contract. You want free? That's nice, who wouldn't? But, sorry, you're getting $300-$400 OFF, and that's the best you're going to get. Take it or leave it, it's the way the business works.

If you're asking Youaremyhero, don't expect a correct answer.

Not entirely sure of what you're referring to here. Are you talking about the Annual Upgrade being discontinued with the NE2 discount? The answer to "will that line still be eligible for an upgrade at the discounted prices after one year?" The answer will be no, once you sign your next contract. If you have one now, it's still there, for the time being.

And NE2 is now $30/$50. The original poster has $100 because it's been a while since their last contract and they stayed on a price plan over $80/mo. If his NE2 were still coming up, he probably would have been under the last NE2 change, which moved the $100 discount to $50.

And it's not $110, either.

It was actually to anyone. Thanks. I just used the NE2 upgrade, and it is to late 2012. I have an upgrade coming in Feb. and one July. I just talked to VW customer Service, and they said those would still be good, but she didn't sound very knowledgeable?

Jan 29, 2011, 5:15 PM
If you used your NE2 before January 16, you should have another one in 20 months. You'll be one of the rare ones. If you did your NE2 after that date, your next upgrade will be in 20 months, and without NE2.

If you have other lines coming up for upgrade, then those upgrades would remain the same. If they are secondary lines on a family share, they didn't have NE2 anyway, they simply have the same type of upgrade that everyone will have in about two years. If they are not part of the family share, then they would have NE2 discounts, and they would remain good for six months past the contract end date.
