Re: Dare I be Disappointed?
I wouldn't go as far as saying the 9700 is a lot like the iPhone... maybe in the sense that it's touch screen but you really cannot compare the two on equal levels.
First... the iPhone is "finger" touch while the 9700 is "pressure" touch. Meaning a stylus will not work on the iPhone as it requires a small amount of heat detected off the user's finger. The 9700 is pressure touch so that you can use a stylus if needed. This makes the iPod far less susceptible to scratches on the touch surface.
Second... the iPhone runs off the full OSX kernel and now offers direct modification via the SDK. The 9700 runs a proprietary cellular phone operating system with far (and I mean FAR) less features. Simply put... the iPhone is a computer to which cellular service was added. The 9700 is simply a phone with a few customizable features.
All that said... this is the main reason Verizon did not pick up the iPhone. Verizon wanted to maintain control over the OS and did not want Apple to be the "middle man" between Verizon and their customers. I'm actually very glad (in a way) that Verizon did not pick up the iPhone. If Apple gave in, then the iPhone would be far less popular than it is today. Of course it would have been nice had Verizon said ok to letting Apple control the phone the way they wanted to. I mean... it's ONE phone. It wasn't like Apple was trying to stake claim to all of Verizon's phones.
The 9700 is a great alternative, no doubt, but Verizon's vendors need to step up to a whole new playing field if they want to compete with the iPhone. I believe we will all see an entirely new genre of cellular technology starting tomorrow with the release of the 2.0 update from Apple! Cell-phones, so-to-speak, are a thing of the past. Ultra portable computers with cellular capabilities are paving the road to the future now.
Note: Verizon is rumored to be releasing 3 or 4 new phones before the end of the year that are "par" with the iPhone... as in entirely different. :) Can't wait to see!

Re: How true is this??
Corporate has just recently started to allow corporate retail reps to do billing adjustments again, if needed to fix a problem.
If a store rep claims otherwise they either have not been informed (gross negligence on the part of them and their management to keep up with the news), or they are just trying to get through that to the next sale.
Note that this is corporate retail stores, not 3rd party dealer stores.

Re: How to fix Internet Sharing that AT&T hid
I doubt that it will automatically detect them (though it's possible) but if you're an AT&T subscriber you can have them send you an SMS handles the configuration for you.
Note that MEdiaNet is AT&T's internal shop. An unlocked phone may not be able to access it at all, though I don't actually know. Even if it can't access MEdiaNet, though, they can help you set it up for internet access.
