Yes it is very useful when typing something will take a lot of time and recording a message could be quicker.
I like the avoidance of air time usage since it counts against unlimited date.

I've gotten pretty good with the keyboard. I thought I was going to have trouble adjusting coming from the enV, but it's pretty good. I LOVE the auto-correction it does-- capitalizing, punctuation, etc. Pretty slick.

If the merger goes through, every user would have approximately 80 million other user that would be IN-calling. That's sound a lot better that a little circle to me.
Note: this is just my opinion and as always- everyone has a right to choose what carrier works best for them.

gsm is cheaper to run. which is probably why most of the world uses them. cdma signals travel farther than gsm... when cingular bought att they added gsm to all their tdma towers. to get similar service, you need roughly 3 gsm towers for every cdma/tdma tower. which is why in those hard to reach places gsm doesnt fair as well...
note: im not saying this is fact. this is what many higher-ups have passed down the line. maybe as a combative tool against gsm, maybe fact. just putting the info out there

The only way that I'm aware of is by setting the Qwerty shortcut. The "my shortcuts" and "internal directional key" options don't allow notepad. With Qwerty, you can just begin typing on the keyboard and it opens up the notepad automatically.
As explained on pg 86 of the user manual, you:
Open the flip and press OK [MENU]
Press 9 [Settings & Tools]
Press 6 [Phone Settings]
Press 2 [Set Shortcuts]
Press 3 [Set Qwerty Shortcut]
