Apparently This Customer Knows More Than I...
by hardcorehavok    Dec 18, 2007, 10:43 AM
in the Shop Talk forum

I had a guy come to my kiosk today with a broken phone. The phone worked, but the screen was screwed up. I told him his options: ME - AT&T has purchased Cell One so you actually have two options. Either you could buy a Cell One phone at full retail price or you could switch to AT&T and get an AT&T phone and plan. *NOTE - We were told Friday that Cell One customers CAN upgrade to Cell One if the store still has Cell One phones in stock. I do not offer this unless the customers asks. Even then, I still attempt to get them to switch to AT&T. CUST - What have you got? ME - For Cell One, we have the Sony Ericsson W580i which costs $400 and the RIM Blackberry 7290 which costs $120. For AT&T, we have the Nokia 2610 for free. It is basically an upgraded version of the phone you have now. CUST - I don't want to sign a contract. I have not been under contract for a while now. I am just month to month. ME - Unfortunately, you must sign a new two year agreement to switch to AT&T. CUST - No, I don't. Call your boss. Call your manager. They can make an exception. Especially given the circumstances. ME - Sir, it is not our policy. It is an AT&T policy. Even if I called my manager, they couldn't override that. CUST - Bull****! They've done it in the past. I am not signing a contract and I am not paying an outradious amount for a phone. (Pointing to the SE W580i) (By this point, this dueche is p!$$ing me off.) ME - I can call AT&T and see if they can make any exceptions. CUST - Do that. ME - Even if they approve, you'd have (While looking for the AT&T Credit and Activations number, I called my manager who was working at our store location. She confirmed that we CANNOT migrate a Cell One customer to AT&T without a new agreement. I went ahead and called C&A anyways just to make the guy happy.) ME - Yes, I have a Cell One customer who wants to migrate to AT&T, but does not want to sign a contract. Is that possible? CUST - I don't want to switch. My phone is broken. That is important. REP - No. They must sign a contract. Unless they want to go to prepaid. ME - (To rep) Thank you. (To customer) You'd have to sign a contract. CUST - Forget it. Apparently you cannot help me. A minute later... CUST - What is your name? ME - Stan Smith. CUST - What is your bosses name? ME - Peter Peters. He owns this whole store. (Kiosk is inside of his grocery store) Finally, he left. What a deuche! Just because your phone is broken does not mean that AT&T is going to change their policies. I want to get a big sign made for our store and kiosk that reads: YOU ARE NOT SPECIAL. RULES AND POLICIES DO APPLY TO YOU.

Well, in answer to my own question, no they did not close nationwide. Just in North and South Carolina. Apparently in my market they went to the mall late into the night, told the security guard that they had to replace a computer, and cleaned all of the inventory out of the kiosk. The employees went into work today to an empty store and a note. merry friggin christmas! deeg

2008 Predictions
by LoopiKelli    Dec 20, 2007, 8:34 AM
in the Shop Talk forum

(From http://www.rcrnews.com ) Note: These predictions were submitted by readers and RCR Wireless News staff. If you don’t see your prediction among those listed below, it’s because your bribe wasn’t big enough. 1. WiMAX will crash and burn, taking Sprint Nextel down with it. (Name withheld by request) 2. In 2008 it will be discovered that Sprint Nextel Corp. has been run by contestants in a reality game show called "The Wireless Joke.” Jessica Simpson is the host. AT&T and Verizon are the main sponsors of this "ground breaking" television. (Name withheld by request) 3. The Google phone won't sell and Google will punish us by releasing all of our dirty searches to the Feds. (Mike Dobrin) 4. Cellphones will take over the world! As the millennium continues to consume more and more megabytes, cellphones will take over the world and in the next decade the universe. It’s discovered that the iPhone was actually a ploy by Steve Jobs to further his ultimate goal of helping Megatron/Mike Huckabee acquire cellphone technology that allows mini robots to take over the world. (Nathan LaFont) 5. More things will come into place for mobile TV to get more viewers (more devices, more efforts from studios/networks), but since the strike is going to continue for some time to come, there won't be anything good to watch on our cellphones, unless you think “American Idol” is good. (Matt Kapko) 6. With the wireless industry’s insatiable appetite for spectrum—whether it’s 700 MHZ, AWS or other new bands—2008 will likely bring growth in creative spectrum-sharing technologies like ATC and UWB. ATC technology trials next year will open the door to more mobile spectrum with a satellite component for next-generation services. UWB will allow large sections of spectrum to be re-used, providing high data rates for personal area networks, without the cost associated with dedicated spectrum. Looking beyond 2008, we’ll likely see even more creative ways to share spectrum so that more technologies and services can be offered at a more feasible cost. (Drew Caplan, Chief Network Officer, Mobile Satellite Ventures) 7. The iPhone will be re-introduced with a slide-out keyboard, come unlocked and will cost two kids and a wife.(Myron C. Mccray) 8. Relentless hype surrounding the iPhone causes national governments to ban all other mobile phones. Anyone found using a phone other than an iPhone will be immediately sent to Apple’s 1984 re-education camp. In a related story, Hell Inc. announces that William Gates is leaving the company to spend more time with his family. Replacing Gates as the Prince of Darkness is Steve Jobs, a long-time employee of the firm. Jobs was tapped as Gates’ successor several years ago following the successful introduction of the iPod. Hell CEO Satan praised Jobs and his track record of integrating Hellish© products into mainstream society. “Making iTunes music incompatible with any other music player was true genius. It was at that point that Steve really caught my eye. With the follow-on success of the iPhone, it was evident that Steve was the only one who could step into Bill’s shoes. Bill was definitely disliked by a large population, but I am confident that Steve can become universally disliked.” (Richard Neville, Partner Roaming Manager, Vodafone Group Roaming Services) 9. Sprint Nextel will finally introduce a phone that everyone wants but no one will pay for. Ooops! They already have the HTC Touch. (Myron C. Mccray) 10. AT&T Mobility will still use "More bars in more places."(Mike Dobrin) 11. HTC will release the "Jesus" phone. It'll be re-branded by the carriers as: "Hey, Zeus!" for AT&T; "Jeez Us!" for Sprint; and the XV3:16 for Verizon. (Mike Dobrin) 12. Emerging markets, such as Bangladesh and Sudan, will leapfrog developed areas such as Western Europe and the U.S. in the mobile e-mail market since there is no DSL or cable in these countries and since PC adoption is so low. Because of this development, and the fact many in these countries will be using mobile devices as their primary means of communication, the demand for “back up and restore” will surge, placing greater pressure on service providers to deliver a low-cost facility allowing customers to retrieve their important contact information over the air (OTA). The demand for this service is being driven by the fact that many feature phone users maintain important information on devices that are not backed up on their PC or a SIM card. (Carsten Brinkschulte, CEO of Synchronica) 13. T-mobile USA will start rolling out a true 3G network—while it's rich and powerful German step-father laughs and treats them like a one-legged stable-boy. (Mike Dobrin) 14. The Helio Ocean drowns. Debt too high to launch a rescue. (Myron C. Mccray)
