faq - how to set mp3 as ringer
steps writen using Vista, Rant had upgraded firmware, i was drinking orange juice. your experience may varry...
How To Set MP3s as Ringers for Samsung Rant: Save As > choose MP3 as extention, NOT WAV. go to that mp3 file's folder, if you see filename.mp3 then rename the .mp3 to a .avi ...unless you only see the file name (and no .mp3) in which case you must first hit Start > Control Panel > Folder Options > View tab > Advanced Settings: make sure "Hide extensions for known file types" is UN-checked. now you can go back and rename it to an .avi properly.
...after you have a few .avi files of different songs and fart noises made up:
4.) run "videoto3gp.exe" in the Pazera folder and drag/drop the .avi files into Pazera. in the middle of the program is a drop-down labled Profile, choose either High Quality 3g2 setting (96kbps is the best we're going to get).
...fiddling with the volume slider is not reccomended.
5.) top of the program screen in bold, white letters on a green background is the word CONVERT. click it now. go back to the folder that your edited mp3/avi files were in and you should see a similarly named .3g2 file.
6.) connect the computer and the phone via usb. from main menu on phone go Tools > 6. Mass Storage > 1. Connect to PC. if it's the first time it may take a moment for the computer to figure things out. tell it yes if it asks you if it can figure things out. to speed things along you might go to Start > Computer > and see if it's listing a "removable drive." most likely it'll pop up when you plug in, so tell it you want to open it like a folder (bottom option).
7.) from within the phone (actually, the memory card) go DCIM > 100SSMED. this is where you want to drag and drop your new .3g2 files. if the folders are not there already you can either make them or stop now, disconnect and use the phone to make a short camcorder video. this creates both folders when you save the video (and it won't hurt anything to delete the video from the computer when the usb is connected again).
8.) now... two ways to change ringer:
- A - change default ring via Main Menu > Settings > 2. Sounds > 2. Ringer Type > 1. Incoming Calls > 1. With Caller ID > 4. My Videos > 2. Memory Card... now you can't see names which sucks huge but you are able to hit the right soft key to bring up Options and chose 1. Play with the Menu/OK button. listen to them and use the Back key to go back. choose the ringer you like by hitting Menu/OK while that ringer is hilighted.
- or -
- B - change ringers for individuals in your contact list. from the Main Menu > Contacts > hilight the person's contact and chose the right soft key to bring up Options. scroll down to Ring > 4. My Videos... aaand it's the same from here as detailed in -A-
note that the files play at half volume. don't judge them too soon as being prohibitively quiet.

how GPS works
KoldPhusion said:
So you're saying that the average consumer can contact a satellite in space from their cell phone without paying one cent for it????
Yes, absolutely. That's how any phone with GPS (including A-GPS) works.
Note that GPS is a one-way radio service. The satellites broadcast special timing signals, which any GPS-enabled device can receive. No communication happens in the direction of GPS device to satellite.
The US gov't operates the GPS satellites. Because it is strictly broadcast, there is no cost difference to the US gov't if no one uses it or a billion people use it at once. Also, there is no capability to identify individual users, and therefore no way to charge for it. It's simply a public radio signal.
In the case of A-GPS (assisted GPS) yes, the phone does actually receive signals directly from the satellite, but the raw data isn't very accurate and/or would take a few minutes to process and resolve into an accurate location reading. Therefore the raw GPS data is processed with the help of servers on the cellular network, and supplemented with location data from the cellular network (triangulation, etc.) to provide location data faster and more accurately.
Note that many phones - especially GSM models - support both standalone and assisted modes.
