Please note - the opinions expressed within are not necessarily those of the staff, family, friends, neighbors, pets, or other sentient beings connected in any way to Phonescoop.

Also be advised - this is a long read.

Okay, so I too fell under the magic special of the various commercials and hype surrounding this phone. I want to be cool just like everyone else! Sure I had the iPhone 3GS at the time and I looked really cool using it - but the Droid was even NEWER! I felt it was important to do my part for the economy and capitalism in general and run out and buy one of these babies - racking up another ETF along the way -. What's that you say? I'm an idiot? Fair enough, but I am a phone geek - Just like you….

Droid does multitask. In a completely moronic way. Every program you open, yes every single one, stays open. It's no wonder that there are like 20 different apps in the android market whose sole purpose is to kill apps which are running. You know why you have to kill them? Because the phone SLOOOWS down when you have too many going at once. It's very annoying. Then get this, apparently you can actually kill the alarm clock app because on 2 separate occasions - my alarm didn't go off. It's okay, my pimp understood, but still - not cool. I love multitasking, I just wish it meant that you could do more than one thing at a time - without everything sucking all together.

Which bring me to my next gripe - 256 (I think?) megs of memory?...

Rob, I'm thankful you have so much creative time on your hands. I only differ with you on a few points: For me, the on-screen keyboard was actually better than the iPhone's. And the call quality for those I was talking to was horrible. Everyone complained about hissing and echoing. Let us know when you find a device you like!

Excellent review (both parts) good job - made me laugh and was informative.
I have looked at this phone both in-store and hands on from a co-worker. Must say my 2 year old Samsung i760 with SPB Mobile Shell 3.5 seems like a better overall experience. Will be upgrading soon...not to Droid. Do not want aliens falling from sky in my backyard.

Re: Chapter 1: The screen - If only the interface actually took advantage of it..…

You have got to be kidding! The Droid (which I own, since Tuesday Nov 10), has TWICE the resolution of the iPhone (which I owned, the original, and the 3G), and the user interface is FAR more customizable than the iphones (assuming no hacks, Cydia, ect), Can widgets go directly on the iPhone desktop? Nope. Does the iPhone have a notifications bar, which can easily drop down, and then zip back up? Nope. Does the iPhone have a completely free, unlocked, open source OS? Nope. Can you place live, active content on your iPhone desktop? Nope. Of course, this is just my opinion, but I find the Android 2.0 interface on the Motorola Droid to to FAR friendlier...

Thanks for refuting some of my opinions vs just flaming!

I said the screen is stunning - what I think the software fails to do is make use of its potential. I agree there are a lot of cool options for customization but here is a perfect example of how dumb it is. If you take picture on the phone, then you try to use that picture, it actually forces you to crop the picture and the results are crap. Most phones (like the iPhone) will resize the picture automatically if you want to use it as a wallpaper. Just poor design...

I am shocked to hear anyone say anything positive about the virtual or physical keyboard. In the virtual - the keys are small, cramped, and not nearly as responsive as just about any other touchscreen phone I have...

Wow... what a flame review huh?

The phone can direct dial to any phone number you want for a specific contact... you just create the shortcut on one of your panels

You can get an agenda view of upcoming events in the calender

The Screen is awesome and is well used even with he icons

The virtual keyboard works great... there really is not a need for the physical one

You can search for a contact by name... thats what the big damn search bar at the top of the phone is for.

You say apps suck... or do u mean there isn't as many as the iphone? Apple is doing exactly what almost killed them the first time around. Androids Marketplace is going to surpass apples in no time in both quantity and quality do to the open sourcing of it...
