If this is something that's seriously being considered, I would hope there would be an opt-out provision for those who don't want to be temporarily cut off from their co-workers, friends and family. Yeah, VZW's getting better. Many of the new phones also have a more user-friendly version of the same UI. I hope they upgrade it soon so they don't lose me to Sprint or AT&T. I'll have to admit it's going to be pretty tempting to go to Sprint if they have WiMax!

I believe the article says it reduces the battery draw by 12x, referring to the amount of power the antenna draws. This will most likely not increase battery life 12-fold since the screen and other functionality will still draw quite a bit of power from the battery.

It seems like AT&T is coming out with a new phone every freaking week! They're obviously trying to take full advantage of being a GSM carrier and pump new phones out as quickly as possible since it's cheaper than it is for VZW or Sprint. I think their ploy is to have a phone that fits pretty much anyone; if you're selective, you'll go to AT&T because they have the biggest selection. I don't even like AT&T that much, but ...

Weight=Quality. The Storm has a glass screen and metal backing; that's going to put on a little extra weight, but you still don't have to be a body builder to use something that weighs 5.5 oz. It weighs about as much as a bar of soap.

Nothing will come close to approaching the Storm for any use whatsoever. It is the culmination of what anyone could ever want in a phone. To be more specific, it combines the user-friendliness of an iPhone with the functionality of both a traditional BlackBerry and a PC. To touch on the Dare a bit, the Dare is a great phone, but it's child's play in comparison. The Dare doesn't have as much functionality, and the main difference everyone will be talking ...

I know it won't be, but I hope it really comes close to the iPhone in price. Not to be a "fanboy", but wouldn't it be amazing if we Verizoners got to have the best phone on the best network? I'm not to keen on dropping more than $200 on this device, but I'm pretty sure (I haven't actually played with it yet) that I wouldn't go up to $300. It will still be nice as a VZW customer to ...

in the Article: Hands-On: BlackBerry Storm forum

For clarification, isn't it MOSTLY AT&T's fault? I've been under the impression that AT&T or any other wireless carrier has standards that a phone has to meet before it is released. If a phone is properly tested and meets the minimum requirements, it's sold through the carrier to the public. Otherwise, it would mean that Apple put out a bunch of faulty iPhones. So, which is it? -AT&T's minimum requirements are too low, so now they're paying the price. -Apple sent out ...

I agree with that, but I also think it's a hit to Apple. AT&T could (I don't know if they do this or not) tell the customers that complain about it that it's Apple's fault and split the blame.

Do you know if the phone will be capable of LTE when it becomes available? I'm not entirely clear on LTE. Would it be an OTA upgrade, or is it hardware that needs to be built into a phone? Maybe I'm being premature on this line of questioning, but if I get the Storm and it turns out that LTE comes out before my next upgrade, I'm going to be upset that I have to wait to get LTE.

The thing is, iDEN is becoming outdated; it's not outdated right now, and the PoC technologies will only become better. WiMAX is on the horizon for Sprint, which will eliminate a lot of issues that have to do with reception - one tower will penetrate buildings and have a 10 mile radius. LTE for the rest of the companies, which is looking to eventually (sooner rather than later) be compatible with WiMAX, will make things even better. The new ...

Why has no one mentioned WiMAX? It will be out by the end of this year, and Sprint will have the build-out done by the time the rest of the carriers begin to release LTE; at least, that's the plan. WiMAX should be able to do PTT, and it should be better than QChat or DC. I hope Sprint sells iDEN to simplify their business model and roll out WiMAX quicker and more efficiently. :D

I don't even do the pic messages very often, so a better camera isn't a big deal to me. I currently have Verizon, but I'm probably going to get Sprint because it will cost me $36/mo less ($432 over 1 year, $864 over the life of the contract). I'll deal with Sprint's customer service, which is actually getting a lot better I hear, for a contract that is almost $1k cheaper with virtually the same network performance. It seems to me that Sprint is changing their business model. They currently do not own any towers, so it seems unlikely they will buy some even if it gains them customers, spectrum, etc. Sprint is really looking to jump to the front in the race for the best technology and is focusing all their attention on getting there. "If you build it, they will come." Sprint's building the wireless field of dreams (or at least trying to).

Does anyone know what any of these new devices will cost for either WiMAX or LTE? Cost of service? This may sound dumb, but is it a possibility that my phone bill will go down? First of all, thank you for bringing that to my attention, phonegnome  After some further research, why do you (this is directed towards anyone) think Sprint and their backers (Google, Intel, etc.) chose WiMAX whereas Verizon and AT&T chose LTE to begin with? The technologies are so similar technologically that WiMAX seems like a pretty obvious choice because it's ready. It seems that WiMAX will also continue to evolve and catch up to LTE's standard pretty quickly. So again, ...

There's absolutely no way that AT&T just found out about this. AT&T have likely been planning this all along. It isn't the best thing for the consumer because WiMAX really is the best thing that will be available until LTE comes out with everyone else. The question is, will WiMAX hold up? I think WiMAX will gather a large audience right away (business customers, wireless gaming and other fun things), but will it have enough of a head start to ...

First of all, people who sign up for this feature will be locked into it for 2 years. As a consumer, this still sounds like something I would want to take advantage of. If, 2 years down the road, Verizon doesn't offer this feature, consumers can choose to go somewhere else. If I didn't already have Verizon, I would jump on this promotion; it's not every day that you get those features on a network as solid as Verizon's.

Yeah, I agree. I played with it for about 15 min myself, and it is a pretty tight phone. The touch screen is far more responsive than I expected and the form factor is perfect. It's also nice that it's so customizable; I didn't like the haptic feedback while scrolling, but you can turn it off! Hooray!
