Pilot's Perspective

I would like to clarify a common misconception that the FAA has a ban on portable electronic devices including cell phones. This is not true. The FCC has said that cell phones are banned in the air, but the FAA doesn't have such a position. Here is a paste of section 91.21 within title 14 of the federal code of regulations (FAA Laws): Sec. 91.21 - Portable electronic devices. (a) Except as provided in paragraph (b) of this section, no person may operate, nor may any operator or pilot in command of an aircraft allow the operation of, any portable electronic device on any of the following U.S.-registered civil aircraft: (1) Aircraft operated by a holder of an air carrier operating certificate or an operating certificate; or (2) Any other aircraft while it is operated under IFR. (b) Paragraph (a) of this section does not apply to -- (1) Portable voice recorders; (2) Hearing aids; (3) Heart pacemakers; (4) Electric shavers; or (5) Any other portable electronic device that the operator of the aircraft has determined will not cause interference with the navigation or communication system of the aircraft on which it is to be used. (c) In the case of an aircraft operated by a holder of an air carrier operating certificate or an operating certificate, the determination required by paragraph (b)(5) of this section shall be made by that operator of the aircraft on which the particular device is to be used. In the case of other aircraft, the determination may be made by the pilot in command or other operator of the aircraft. Note number five under paragraph b which basically states it is ultimately up to the pilot in command (or the airline in the case of a commercial passenger flight) to say if any electronic device can be used or not. From my experience as a pilot I can tell you that I have experienced interference between a cellular phone and communications equipment on the plane. A person sitting directly behind me started talking on their phone and at the same time my radio became weak. Once they were off the phone the radio started working properly again. Coincidence? Maybe, but I doubt it. My experience is in smaller aircraft, not large airliners so I concede that having a phone on fifty feet from the ****pit might be different than having one on directly in the ****pit. However I feel it is inaccurate to say a cellular phone could not interfere with aircraft instrumentation.

What?!?!? Everyone else can add a line for 9.99 but not our own stores?

We just went through our training for the new rate plans. It was stated in our job aid that afiliates aka wirefly and amazon can still offer the additional line for 9.99 whereas we have to offer it at 14.99. WTF!?!? Are they trying to make my job harder? On a side note...our entire training was basically devoted to comparing us to Verizon.

Sorry, those phones don't have GSM 850. While they still would work on Cingular, coverage will be somewhat mediocre. Note that Here are reccomendations for phones with GSM 850: Nokia 3620 - Going for EXCELLENT prices on eBay, making this Symbian OS (Series 60 platform) smartphone an excellent deal. I recently got my unlocked 3620 there. Styled for the male user. Motorola V551 - A quadband phone for the world traveler living in the U.S. It's got EDGE and video recording. Motorola V635 - More powerful than the V551, with megapixel camera, 18-bit display, and external display. Samsung SGH-P207 - A clamshell phone with 18-bit color display and VGA camera. Samsung SGH-P777 - A slider phone with 18-bit display and megapixel camera. LG L1400 - Clamshell featuring a VGA camera with external display
