Note on avoiding the AT&T bloatware
by Roadkill    Aug 28, 2008, 2:02 PM
in the HTC Tilt 8925 / TyTN II forum

After initial device setup, but before the "customizations" are installed, there are two prompts. The first says something to the effect of "tap screen to begin using your device." The second appears shortly after the first and is a dialog box that says something to the effect of "customizations will begin in 3 seconds" with the only button available being "Ok." Prior to this WM 6.1 ROM, you could hit the soft reset button (small hole above and to the right of the USB port in the bottom of the device) while the second prompt was displayed and that would abort the customization process. The second prompt basically gave you 3 seconds, which was plenty of time to hit reset. THAT NO LONGER WORKS. If the second prompt is displayed at all, the customizations have started and if you hit reset the device will re-install the new ROM and start over. In order to avoid the AT&T bloatware, you must hit soft reset BEFORE the second prompt appears. It's not hard, but you have to be reasonably quick. I just inserted the stylus into the soft reset hole, then tapped the screen (as instructed by the first prompt) with my finger, then immediately hit reset with the stylus. A clean install of WM 6.1 should have 103.16 MB free storage memory and 55.10 MB free program memory. If you allow the AT&T bloatware to install you will only have ~88 MB of free storage memory.

Windows Mobile 6.1 now ready to download

in the HTC Mogul / XV6800 / PPC6800 / P4000 forum

See http://support.vzw.com/phones/ and look at the bottom of the page underneath Downloads. Alternatively, if you want a direct link, go to http://handsets.utstar.com/downloads/XV6800%20MR1% 20Upgrade.zip (I gave the VZW Support link first to demonstrate this is a legitimate Verizon Wireless release). Some of the primary enhancements with this upgrade are: • Upgraded OS to Windows Mobile 6.1 • Added EVDO Rev A capability • Updated the MMS client to be compatible with WM 6.1 • Added Microsoft Remote Desktop Application • Added capability to use VzNavigator application. • Resolved compatibility issues with Microsoft Voice Command 1.6. • Added capability to read micro SD card of up to 16GB memory. Note: the update erases everything from memory. As such, I need to wait to install this update until I get time to reinstall all of my PPC apps. Rick

3G Issues in Arlington VA
by pfeif4    Sep 2, 2008, 7:43 PM
in the AT&T forum

Can anyone confirm there is a UMTS issues in Arlington, VA? I complained about the iPhone 3G not have very good 3G speed and they stated there is a UMTS issue in this area since 7/16/08. My issue: Fast speeds for 30 minutes or slow and then time-outs, mega latency, etc... Edge is VERY reliable. Note: My 881U modem doesn't seem to have any issues in the same area. Other people are experiencing the same thing with the iPhone. Tech stated the 881U uses different 3G technology than the iPhone which doesn't make sense to me, but... Is it the phone or is there really a network issue? Thanks Mark
