To Buy or Not To Buy

Personally, I haven't been buying into the hype. Yes it's beatiful, no doubt. Colorful screens, sleek lines, the apple symbol. And no, I am not an apple fan. I have disliked apples since I became an engineer. But I have always acknowledged their user friendly interface. That being said, I have been a Motorola fan for years (please no digs on this one). However, I really never got into the "smartphone" craze. I use my phone as a phone, but my girlfriend has a Blackberry Curve and it really has got me intereted. I was hoping to wait for the Nuvifone, but I don't think that trinket will ever happen. So the question is, should I wait for the the Bold or Nuvifone or even the Android T-Mobile G1 or take the leap of faith and buy the iPho...

Add to your list....network SUX and the dropped calls are ridiculous! Camera sux, even if it was great, you can not do anything with the pics!

You can use that rational and never buy anything. There will always be something better down the line. I bought it on a trial basis, fully intending to return it if I didn't love it. After 2 weeks I was debating whether to return it. I went and played with some Blackberrys, watched a BB bold comparison on you tube and played with my brothers N95. Nothing came close to the intuitive OS of the iphone.
Background.

Also : last note, playing with it at the store doesnt do it justice. You need to rely on it as a phone to really get it in my opinion.

I have a good friend that has a iphone and LOVES the thing. Think it is up to the individual. I had the iphone for 2 weeks and returned it. It has some really awesome features but most of those have nothing to do with everyday phone use.
The first few days while i was "playing" and learning the phone i had to charge it 3 to 4 times per day.........that in itself should have been the warning sign.
Internet is just plain aweful unless you use WiFi and the only place i had that was at work. Also had a PC at work so it did no good at all. GPS is VERY crappy, oh and did i mention the camera?..........oh yeah, i did LOL. BTW......my friend that LOVES his iphone has only 1 app loaded on it? Think about that for a sec......

Battery Life,
The other day I couldn't sleep and woke up @ 4am. Reached for my not fully charged Iphone and surfed for 2.5 hours before I got the 20% low battery warning. I don't know how many laptops would last that long.

I guess if you want to compare an Iphone to a laptop regarding surfing/email or an Iphone to a dedicated GPS or you compare a Iphone to a dedicated Camera or an Iphone to a dedicated mp3 player or a Iphone to a dedicated scientific calculator or an Iphone to a game system then obviously there are strong arguments against the iphone but tell me what other phone does all these things and does them well considering it's size and mobilty.

My only opinion would be if you like a phone for how it looks, the iPhone is your phone. I've had an old 700p for over two years can do everything mentioned above. Don't know why having a camera(camera phones in US since 02--video camera phones since around 04) on a phone, MP3's(since around 05 downloading songs over the air), and the scientific calculator(been there done that on phone--actually have not use one since math in high school--daily use???grocery shopping maybe)is a valid reason to run and get an iPhone. The iPhone to me is like an incredible beautiful woman who is dumb as a door knob. I thought I wanted one until I found out no ATT 3G near me at all(from GA--so original iPhone would be better for me), MMS is a must(I like to se...

I disagree with your analogy, especially in light of comparison to the Treo 700p. To Iphone just looks ok, the beauty of it is the operating system and user interface. Its so easy and intuitive to use especially when compared to a Treo which uses either a dead palm OS or that nightmare known as windows. neither of which can compare to the ease of use in iphone.

I will agree that the replacement policy is a valid concern but MMS is a mere inconvenience since every mobile number comes with an email address now. It is a pain to enter that info into your phone but once that email is in there it acts just like MMS for all intents and purposes.

True enough on the MMS, it's a pain, but it works. The OS issue, well I agree with the mobile windows being garbage, but the Palm OS is quite delightful and I could go either way between apple or palm from an OS point of view.

The Iphone has it's pros and cons just like anything you buy. Yeah, the battery sucks and the 3G/dropped calls is nothing to write home about, but the OS is user friendly and the app store has loads of applications to keep you up all night. If you are the type of person that is just going to be using it as a cell phone and nothing else, then it would be a waste of your money. But if you are looking to break into the smartphone arena, then this is a great device for you. There are a bunch of freewares that you can take advantage of. No other smartphone offers this array of programs and free. And now other smartphone provides frequent updates as Apple does. You can never have the perfect device, but at least the updates will hopefully g...

Ok, I finally decided to try it and what can I say, I haven't been able to stop playing with it since I got it. The MMS sending is a non-issue, I can send them to MMS phones via the e-mail function, I just can't receive them, which doesn't break my heart. The display is amazing. Reminds me of when I got my RAZR after my V60, wow. The ipod function is great. The SMS is cool. The camera takes amazing photos. The safari browser is definitely the best on the market, when it doesn't crash. The app store is cool, although not consistant. Apple removes apps all the time. The battery life is not so good, but if you use it as a phone, it is ok. I talked with the guys in my IT department and the battery life is on par with the current issue...

Don't just look @ specs. A lot of phones are user friendly, iphone is user helpful. E-mail photo's to other phones. ATT email address to other phones is area code & # @mms.att.net , just add this to everyone you have in your address book that's on ATT, then just email & they'll get it. Have everyone else just email to your phone's email address, which most everyone can do & shazam, you'll get them. Oh voice dial on bluetooth, $5/mo, get voiceconnect on ATT's network (with multitude of other features, well worth $5.) 1st time use push *08, connects to voice connect, after that use redial on bluetooth, presto, connected to ATT's voice connect network. You can also edit names, #'s on line. Can call anyone in your address book or get weather, sp...

I've got one and I like it o.k. Bottom line is the perfect phone doesn't exist, the carriers always manage to screw them up.

I like the fact that I've got easy access to movies and music for travel (I use and like iTunes), only one device to carry. Well actually you also need to carry car charges and USB chargers everywhere you go because the battery sucks and 2.1 didn't help. Their implementation of "Mail for Exchange" is better than Symbian, but obviously not as good as Windows Mobile. UI is much more intuitive than both Symbian and Windows Mobile.

I was hoping the Blackberry Bold would come out first because I really liked the Curve. I used a Curve for 30 days and had to return it because where I live is predominantly 3G an...

my best bud(roomate) has an Iphone. The phone is pretty neat, it locks up to often for me. His cellular network is DOG ass slow and takes alot of fun out of the phone.

I have a 8830 blackberry on an Ev-do network. So we are not even compareing Apples to Apples here.

I would not give up my 8830 for the I phone at this point.

But i am not you.

You might have diffrent needs then I do.

The only thing that comes to mind that can be done on the Iphone that my phone cant do ( and its pretty MAJOR if your a big time internet person) Is use flash in the browser.

my blackberry does all the other stuff and more, music, streaming video, streaming Sat radio,GPS internet Thethering to my laptop.

That is not even getting in to my Ema...
