Making Mp4 video ringtones...
by nbb350    Dec 9, 2005, 1:40 PM
in the Samsung MM-A940 forum

Last night, with the help of postings on sprintusers.com, I figured out how to make and upload my own ringtones to my new a940 without touching the internet. I thought I'd share with everyone... You'll need: 1) the a940 phone, 2) a Transflash/microSD card & SD adapter, 3) an SD card reader on your computer, 4) Mp3 Direct Cut editing software (or equivalent), 5) 3GP_Converter software (or equivalent), 6) lots of patience. Steps: 1) Download & install Mp3DirectCut from here: http://www.softpedia.com/get/Multimedia/Aud io/Audio-Editors-Recorders/mp3DirectCut.shtml 2 ) Open Mp3DirectCut and load your mp3 song that you want to make into a ringtone. clip out whatever parts you don't want and edit it down to about 30-45 seconds. If you figure out the software well (i didn't), you can even merge separate songs together. save your resulting 30-45 sec mp3. Note: any longer than 30-45 seconds and the file will be too large for the phone to recognize. I’m not sure what the size limit is, but it didn’t like a 1.5MB file I made… 3) Download & install the 3GP_Converter software from here: http://www.videohelp.com/tools?tool=3GP_Con verter 4) This conversion program is a little unfriendly – the first thing you have to do is get it to display "Broken English". Yeah, that's the best it does... Set the output format to “General: 3GP2+AAC General Setting” and then the settings to “QCIF Normal Quality 15fps Mono” (you could do stereo, but mono is less memory). Set your “Output Directory” as you desire and drag/drop your mp3 file from Windows Explorer to the blank area at the top of the program. The output file is converted to a *.3g2. Note: you can also convert an entire MPG video file this way and use it in your phone, but make sure the resulting 3g2 file is still under the assumed 1MB file size limit. I made a 1.5MB video/audio clip this way and the phone wouldn’t recognize it. Also, since the external display is only 96x96 pixels, it’s not even QCIF (172x144) resolution and may not play properly or at all. 5) Insert the TransFlash into the SD adapter and then insert the SD adapter into your card reader. Copy the *.3g2 file(s) to the X:\DCIM\100SSMEDIA folder. 6) Eject the TF card from the computer and insert into your phone. 7) Go to Menu > Settings > Sounds > Ringer Type > Voice Calls > With Caller ID > My Videos > In Memory Card and select your new video. They don’t show labels (at least mine don’t) so it might be a little trial and error to get the right ringtone. I believe a similar process can be used to assign a certain ringtone to a certain caller in your Contacts section. I haven’t tried that yet. Good luck! Also, I believe that everything done here can also be done in Quicktime Pro 7, but that costs $30. My method is free. Also, I have no idea if this method will work on other phones - I don't have any other phones on which to test the process.

Don't delete emails ...

in the HTC SDA (USA) / SP5m (Tornado) forum

If you delete emails from the SDA -- and then run another Send/Receive -- the deleted emails will be removed from the ISP's server. Seems that's just the way it works. There is no option to Save Copy On Server. Note that it is not the deletion on the SDA that deletes it from the server (how could the server know?). It's the subsequent Send/Receive. Note also that this has nothing to do with whether or not you sync up your Outlook email to the SDA (I don't).
