Re: Eventually!

No, you're holding Android and iPhone OS to two different standards. You're comparing Android's lack of deployment *after* its official release to Apple's development time *before* release. Can't do that, or else you'd have to count the *year* it took for Android 2.0 to come out. By contrast, Apple seeded versions months in advance so that application compatibility was there right at the gate, which is impressive given the fact there's usually a delay with App store submissions. Why HTC can't do the same my guess is because of the Android OS's mis-management and fragmentation.

1st round of 4G

Also realize that this is the first round of 4G. Nothing is ever maxxed out on the first round. Think of the PS/PS2/PS3... each year the games get better on the same equipment. LCDs vs CRTs. LCDs weren't the winner out of the gate. Solid State Harddrives vs Magnetic Harddrives. SSDs are still improving by leaps and bounds and will surpass magnetic drives at the current rate. GSM vs WiMax/LET. GSM is on one of it's last upgrades. It's at the peak of it's prime. WiMax/LTE is starting at the same point GSM is peaking. Give it time.

I'm on AT&T and they are supposed to be getting the Pre Plus this summer as well... I'm honestly debating on Palm vs Android (Android options are painfully lacking on AT&T)... and 7... The biggest drawbacks to the Pre is... well... Palm. They waited to long to update and now they are the under dogs in a *BIG* way. HP's purchase of them may be their savior, but it's hard to tell. Being last leaves them with fewer app developers as well. Android and iPhone have apps galore. Not so much with the Palm. Most of the important stuff should be covered, but with fewer choices if you don't like whats there. The benefits are a much smoother OS. Android is cool, but Palm's OS is smooth as silk. The multi-tasking features of WebOS are what the others are now aiming for. Even with their under-dog status, I may upgrade into a Palm this fall. Don't know until I do it... a lot depends on AT&T Android offerings... and how well 7 does out the gate.

Correction, the Moment was the first android phone on Sprint. The Hero came out shortly after. Currently though, the Hero is the most sold Sprint phone we have. Goes back to your original claim that Sprint doesn't have a good PDA phone on the market. I understand you are frustrated with Sprint, I can read it in the posts. But keep in mind, the phone you choose does determine your happiness with a provider. The pre was a mistake out the gate and this is the phone you are basing your opinion of Sprint right now. That phone has had numerous issues that I won't get into. The Hero and Moment also have issues if we are being honest here. At the same time, as a whole the android phones have outsold the Pre for a reason. They're just better phones hands down. All those neat little applications that you can buy for the pre to include games, ringtones, and applications, can be found on the android for free. Think of the savings alone and then ask yourself again why so many people have moved to those phones.

Actually its possible that it might not have an update....they are being indirect about it! Also don't you think a good selling point from the gate with a phone running 1.6 would be to mention it is eclair/froyo upgradeable?

in the Article: San Francisco Might Allow Public to Block Ugly Cell Towers forum

This actually already happens in many affluent parts of the country. However, unlike this San Francisco proposition, they don't come out and make it a blatant law. In their cases, the proposed cell tower gets "re-zoned" indefinitely until the carrier practically has to give up its cause. Parts of Southern Florida are infamous for this, for example. I agree with you, though. The whole, "Not In My Back Yard" stance is rather pathetic. I can understand a limitation from throwing up a standard metal tower frame in the middle of a public parksite, in San Francisco a good example is Golden Gate Park, but in the meat of the city? *just shakes head* what I would like to see is the Federal reaction. How is Congress and the FCC going to handle this? What I do know is that this proposition will cause studies and legal actions and governance issues to arise that cost the taxpayers money.

in the Article: Verizon to Introduce Tiered Pricing in 4 to 6 Months forum

4g devices will be tiered out the gate, but it's not going to be the crazy small caps people are thinking. At the same time, I think that they'll share this cap across 3g/4 access but because of this, there won't be a signifigant price increase. So something like (aircards) 5gb 3g/4g= $30 25gb 3g/4g= $50 (Remember, this still won't be a "primary" internet) Per GB overage rate of something less than $10/GB For 3g I don't see it really changing that much, with the possible exception of them making a lower tier smartphone plan. (Remember the BGR rumor about 3gMM phones going the way of the dodo, this would fit in nicely) So maybe: $15/mo for 500mb/1gb? If they do put a "cap" on 3g, I don't see it being lower than 5gb but I could be wrong. I'm just bored, so I started thinking about how they would do this. *Disclaimer about this being the interwebs so don't take anything as gospel.. etc etc*

True enough. But I feel that *most* people are good hearted and want to do a good job. A lot of those reps that fail right out of the gate are due to poor leadership from their management. Some people have the ability to take learning and self-respect in their own hands, most people however need to be taught it. Most supervisors/managers are just that. Sups and Management. They act based on what they are told, and do not have thoughts of their own. I train my agents (and yes, I call them agents to their faces, and not reps.) to be leaders and not representatives. Guess who's team has had the most people pulled for floor support. Guess who's team has been number 1 or 2 for the last 3 years? Guess who's team's agents have the most tenure in the building? Any person can be a good rep, and I'm not saying there aren't tards out there, cause there damn sure are. I'm just saying leadership has a lot to do with it, too. Even the stupidest rep can be turned in a top agent with a little work and the right direction.

Have you ever used the comparison system here on phonescoop? It's quite good. Also, the X has a 4.3 inch screen, the Fascinate a 4.0. The X has an 8 MP camera, the Fascinate a 5.0MP. And you know what, side by side they are very different in size, looks and feel. To the original poster, I'd read some of the reviews, both here and on Phonearena, visit a local store and play with them, and then make a decision. I've sold both of them and like the X better because of the bigger screen and the larger out of the box memory capacity (24 vs 16). The Fascinate has a lot to recommend it as well, so it will really be a contest of your initial gut feel for which one you like when you see them. Neither one of them is a bad choice, or presented any more out of the gate issues than the other. The X has been getting the 2.2 upgrade over the last few weeks, and the Fascinate will probably have it by the end of November.

Hey, we go back along way. The time line is a mirror! Equal opportunity sufferers! Remember the original Storm and the months of waiting for an update to make the handset useful only as a paperweight? :D The splenda wrappers in the battery port to make the Un-sure Press....Press? Dinosaur days and we're still surviving with the Storm. Now that's dedication! A day doesn't go by that my Drip, I mean Storm doesn't amaze me with a new glitch of some kind. As soon as I say it works great....Lock.... Crash...some new Government-sponsored calamity (partly kidding)....never fails. I'm really the Stormsufferer! Ultimately, RIM will get on the LTE bandwagon. I'd love it to be with a BB touch device (I am a BB loyalist), but it will not be in the eminent future. Probably the 4th quarter after they address the battery issues. Android will lead out of the gate, but that QNX 4G and a non-postage sized screen will light up a VZW Match.com with RIM and they'll kiss and make up. :P Lets face it, they have Email and business solutions in the bag. Now all they need is some plastic surgery, to bribe away a Motorola designer and convince him Canada is a good place to live

A brief history of the internet...
by Iknownothing    Feb 18, 2011, 10:08 PM
in the Article: House of Reps Puts the Kibosh on FCC Net Neutrality Push forum

There have been some on these threads speculating that because isp's have as of yet charged by the website they will not now begin to do so. Their argument is essentially if they have not been motivated to do it as of yet they will continue to not be motivated. This begs the question, if there is additional money to be made from per website charging, then why hasnt it been done yet? A brief history of the internet is perhaps in order. The internet was not something that was designed by any one company or entity. It was originally set up by the pentagon and then several universities connected to each other. Until 1994 the internet backbone was government controlled. Access to the internet was originally granted by phone companies or common carriers. As things like streaming video and media downloading became popular speed bacame an issue. At this point cable companies and other telco's began to try to get a foot in. By competing on speed and pricing they were able to take customers from phone companies. This is a good thing. The type of competition that industry needs. Now fast forward ten years. The internet has changed. eveyone is on it. It is no longer the province of the young and the hip with their emails and their im's and their textspeak. But everyones grandma is on the facepage. Which you can access from your phone. Cable companies have become entrenched providers because of their speed. But something else is happening as well. Internet speed and content is approaching the point where it is becoming a threat to the cable companies core business. We are at a crossroads. Will the internet be more like cable? where we buy channel packages, or will cable become more like the internet? Where we simply pay a gate fee for whatever content we can access at whatever speed we can afford. A couple of months ago several large isp's met with a large marketing firm to get a pitch on how to market per website charging (cant find te link but it's there on both gizmodo and engadget somewhere if you care to look,). Comcast has already and in several ways attempted to thwart netflix' streaming business. A business which competes directly with a service that they provide, creating, of course, an inherent conflict of interests. Verizon is currently suing the fcc for the right to charge per website. Why sue for a right you have no intent to use? We need companies that compete for our business with innovative products, not innovative ways to charge us extra and make it look like more service. A market ecomony is based on competition. Every competition must have rules. The kind of rules we make will determine the kind of competition that we are provided. If we want smaller businesses to thrive, if we want new and innovative products, if we want more job creation and to take a leadership role; then we need rules that force large companies to compete for our business with smaller companies, on the basis of their ideas. We dont want rules that empower and encourage larger companies to simply leverage market share and charge more. A market share they did little to earn. When, in the mid nineties, we granted care of the internet to private companies in the us we also granted them the public trust. A standard to which we should not feel shame for holding them accountable.

Yeah that's true of any new tech. Early 3G tech was laughable to what we have now. The same was for 2G. Huge difference between an older TDMA switch data call vs a GSM EDGE call... both of which are "2G". So it stands to reason that 4G won't be full on 100% up to potential right out of the gate. But the base tech is there.

LOL the dependable, sprint is as much so as LTE, they are all new and unpredictable as verizon had trouble right out of the gate. Sprint with more devices, um yes, ALOT more, americas fav 4g, so far yes, sprint has more 4G users than the rest combined since they have been in it for over a year. And they are truely unlimited on 4G as verizon is, but verizon will tier this summer.

Just 2.2? 2.3 Gingerbread has been out since last year, so why not come out with that version right from the gate? But I'd let that pass as being stock Android, the upgrade could come soon. I'd not let it pass, however, if the phone was not designed to take advantage of the fastest CDMA speed available from T-Mo, now 20, and 40 Mbps by summer.
