Basic provider/phone decisions

Hi! I have a motorola v265 phone through Cricket. Can it be unlocked and used in the Dominican Republic and/or Europe? I also have Sprint service with another phone for travel in the US. I am thinking of canceling Sprint, signing up with a new provider who offer better international coverage, and buying a new phone to go with it. I only need the basics--calling in and out. Can anyone recommend a good provider and a phone? Thank you, Beverly

k800 use in the USA

hi,

i am in the USA and just got the Sony k800. i inserted my cingular SIM that works fine in my other phones. the problem is, in locations that i normally get service, i get no service and i get the EMERGENCY ONLY call option.

then, when i step outside, i get service. is there a frequency i do not get here on that phone? i got it because i wanted to use it for traveling internationally as well as here in the states, isnt it supposed to work everywhere here as well?

thanks,
pp

Roaming suggestions for africa (among other locations)

My boss travels internationally about 50% of the time, much to S. America and African countries, but also Netherlands, Denmark etc.

In the US, we use VZW and internationally he uses tmo.

Rates vary from .99/min to 4.99 typically - but I'd like to know if anyone has any recommendations for carriers that service a good chunk of these areas a bit cheaper.

If it's not much difference, we probably don't want to juggle a 3rd phone - if it's significant - we might.

Last roaming bill was about $900 - probably just th cost of doing business - but hey - if I can shave off $500 a month and be a big hero it would be just mahvelous...

Frequencies

I need help with GSM tri bands and quad bands.

My understanding is that the 850 and 900 freq. are only useful in the US. while the 1800 and 1900 are the bands used in foriegn countries.

So a tri band will work in any foriegn country.

This is relative to using local SIM cards.

Is this correct?

Thanks

sims, locks & Nokia 3100

Forgive me, i'm new to this.
I have a Nokia 3100 which has a provider and a number based in the UK.
I'm now off to other points in the globe (Argentina, Mexico, Germany, Japan). By the time calls in those countries are either sent or received on this phone, it's costing me a fortune per minute.
Should i be buying a new SIM for my phone as i arrive in each country?
Does that mean i get a new (local) phone number with each new SIM?
Am I buying a prepaid sim? or arranging for new billing each time??
And what does having "locked" or "unlocked" phone mean and how would I know if mine is locked or unlocked?
Thanks in advance,
cn

Which phone should I get?

Hey phone scoopers,

I'm gonna be getting a new phone soon, and I'm thinking about going with a non-domestic phone. Maybe European or Japanese. Anyway, I've never even looked at these types of phones before and I have no idea where to start. I just want an awesome stylish phone with camera, video, internet capabilities, and something that won't break too easy. I want it to look nice and unique and have some fancy options. =) Also, it has to be able to use a sim card when unlocked (I'm with cingular).

Anyone have any reccomendations? ๐Ÿ™‚

Moving from UK to US

My boyfriend is planning on moving to the US within the next year or two, and really wants to bring his current cell phone with him (Nokia 6170). I suggested putting a US simcard in it when we get our new cell plan. What phones have compatible simcards for it? Can you get the simcard separately?

Will this even work? ๐Ÿคจ

can i use my USA tracfone to text Australia?

I have a friend in australia and an unactive tracfone from nokia. I want to know whether I will be able to send text messages to her if I buy minutes. I read at the tracfone website that you must enter a 10 digit number in order to send a text message, and her number has more than 10 digits. Does this make it impossible?

Thanks.
Mike.

Unlock code - Motorola V551

This is a plea for help from anyone that can or is willing.

I have a Motorola V551 that is currently under the designation of Rodgers Wireless. I LOVE this phone but I have a Fido S.I.M. Card.

I was gratefully helped on these forums about a year and a half ago with this same situation (different phone). Anyone who can or will, please provide me with the unlock code for this phone.

Thank you in advance!

Best Source for purchasing European phones

All,

Can anyone recommend a good source for purchasing European versions of phones? Also, is there anything special I need to do so that the phone will work in the US?

Sick and tired of waiting out new phones to come to the US market. There's a Nokia that is out overseas and is due to come to the US market in the 2nd quarter (which means most likely the end of summer); way too long for my desires.
