Overall Best Global Carrier

Forgive me in advance for this thread if what I'm asking is redundant...

In all of the extensive reading on this board that I've done I cannot seem to get a sense of which carrier is best globally. Maybe it is that there are no true global carriers yet, I'm not sure.

My situation is that I live on the east coast but do a lot of travel to Europe and Turkey and thought I should broaden my scope of carriers to consider rather than doing the whole purchasing of pre-paid SIM cards when i get overseas.

Thoughts/Suggestions/Opinions?

Japan/Europe/USA

Does anyone know what kind of cell phone is needed to work in Japan, USA, and Europe? It seems that GSM Quad Band would cover USA and Europe. What is needed in Japan? I've read that Japan uses 3G and there are some phones coming out soon which have 3G and GSM; would any 3G phone work in Japan? The Nokia E61 is 3G + Quad Band GSM. Wondering if this would work.

Japanese handsets

Anyone know much about the recently released Casio W41CA and HItachi W41H? I found out that the Casio works off a CDMA 1x EVDO network. Does this mean only Verizon can support it?

Anyway comments would be appreciated.

Shopping in Hong Kong

This April my gf and I will go to Hong Kong and we want to take the occasion to shop for phones.

We are from Canada and we don't know what we must look for to get a phone that will work when we'll come back...

Our friend, who live in HK and come back times to times to Canada, told us that we need GSM tri-band phones. With some research, i found the obvious: many service providers in Canada are GSM compatible and most phones are tri-band (or even quad-band).

Still, is there any other compatibility features i must look for ?

What's the difference between locked and unlocked in a phone ?

Thanks for helping a noob 🙂

Best World Phone - CDMA+GSM or Quad GSM

I will be travelling extensively thru Asia in the coming year. South Korea, China and Taiwan.

At first I thought a quad-band GSM is what I'm looking for. But what about a dual-mode CDMA and GSM phone?

I would like to buy an Asian phone to use and use it back in the states too.

Thanks

Internation phone service and phone options: currently with verizon

Hi everybody. I'm new to the forum so hello.
I'm moving overseas next month and searching for my best options for cellphone service. I'm leaving to Israel in mid-march and verizon's options for service are limited if any.
The only option presented has been this:
https://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=406 »

for the price of $349.

I'm researching into other phones that I could use with my verizon service (global only) and hopefully I will be able to stay with verizon.

Verizon does not have international calling plans, so my only options now are cellphones.

I thank everybody ahead of time for the help and any suggestions, cellphone advice or personal experience.

How can we reduce our Mexico phone service bills?

We have two employees in Mexico. They call us in Pennsylvania, and they call our customers in Mexico, Central America, and South America, and we call them. Other than using only e-mail to communicate, does anyone have any tips/ideas on how to reduce their phone service (both land and mobile) invoices? Thanks.

Motorola E398 Voicemail Icon always ON

So heres the deal,
I got my E398 about a month or so back....and I got Cingular service.
everything worked great for a few weeks....then I started having a wierd problem...Whenever I retrieved a new voicemail, I was getting a text message and it said text message from '#@' or some other symbols like this...
I took it to Cingular store and the guy looked at it ...i dont exactly know what he did...but now even though I do not have any new voicemails the voicemail notification icon is always ON. I tried to do a Master reset. No help!
I called up Cingular and they tried to do something at their end...but they say the problem seems to be with the phone...and since its not a 'cingular' phone they can provide only limited support.
Does anyone ...

Question from non-tech-savvy parent

My daughter, 14, will be going to London with her drama class in April for a week. Can she take her cellphone with her (Samsung sch-a670) and have it work there? If so, what do I have to do to make sure it will work? If not, is there any good alternative I can purchase/arrange for her so she'll have a phone there?

Thanks.

Cingular & European Tri-Band?

Hello,

I live in the Marshall Islands and our cells here just switched to the GSM 900 band. I want to get a phone that I will be able to use in the US with Cingular prepaid.

I understand the cingular network is 850/1900. If I get a tri-band that is 900/1800/1900 will I be able to use it with cingular? What will I be losing by not having the 850 band.

Thanks!

Shawn

what carrier best for GSM phone in the US?

I really want to buy this phone, the SE w800, but i dont know what carrier would give me the best service. the guy at the sony store said that i could use nextel (which i think is BS), cingular, t-mobile or verizon i think. i have nextel and i'm pretty sure that it only uses 850 so thats gotta be wrong. i talked to the cingular guy and he said that i shouldnt sign w/ them b/c the phone doesnt support 800 frequency. the t-mobile guy said i could do it through them and have good service but i know they work off commission so i'm a little hesitant to trust them. verizon is a good carrier here. probably has the most consistant service or so i'm told. they are expensive though.
i'm a little confused about all this. if the phone supports GSM 900...

Problem with w550 on Cingular

Hey all,
I've got a w550(not the w600), and I'm using it on the American Cingular network(850 band isn't that important). Everything works fine, except when I go to Medianet and try to download something....everytime I try to go to a download page it pops up "an unexpected error has occured". I downloaded the WAP settings from Sony Ericsson, Cingular's no help as even if they did know what was up they wouldn't tell me 'cause it's not a Cingular-specific phone.....any tech-savvy developers out there able to help me?

Purchasing Unlocked Phones from Overseas

Has anyone had any success purchasing brand new, unlocked, GSM phones from over seas? I really want to get the N91 but it's not offered in the US yet (big surprise). And it's doubtful that it will make it to the US market within a reasonable timeframe.
I've tried eBay only to be tempted by a con artist claiming to use an escow service. And I've looked into a number of websites (mostly from Barcelona, Spain), but they all want a cash payment via Western Union. Like I'd ever do that!
So I am about to give up and settle for another crappy US phone that doesn't have the features I want.
Please help!

Which bands, which countries, which networks...

Is there an Internet-based resource showing which bands are used in various locations and networks?

I'd like to know which of my old phones can be used in the Philippines and I'm not certain which bands are used there.
