Best place to buy phone for international travel?

I really need advice. I will be leaving in two days for 5 month trip to incl: South Pacific, New Zealand,Australia,SE Asia,India, and Africa.

I cannot figure out what would be the most cost-effective phone including SIM card, and best place to purchase it.

Is it more expensive to buy in Fiji,New Zealand,Australia- than U.S.?

Would purchasing a Passport+ SIM card be advisable? Has anyone any experience purchasing phone through STA Travel?

Is there any particular rate plan/phone you would recommend?

I just want basic phone, preferably with a camera, and hopefully keep same phone number regardless of country.

Thanks for your help.

Unlocked Motorola V3xx will not pick up networks- help!

I have a Motorola V3xx phone through AT&T/Cingular. I recently moved to Italy and suspended my service with AT&T. They provided me with the unlock code for my phone so I would be able to use it with a SIM card in Italy. However, I purchased a Vodafone SIM card and my phone will not pick up any networks. I have an old Motorola V3 (unlocked) phone that I have been using with the SIM and it's working with the networks. Why is this newer Motorola Razor not working properly?! Is there anything I can do to make it recognize the Vodafone networks? I have take the phone to Vodafone but they were uable to solve the problem. Please help! I love my V3xx!!

Free roaming in Canada?

My dad is traveling for business in Canada a lot right now and is paying roaming charges through the nose. I've heard that Verizon has a Nationwide plus Canada plan, does anyone know if any other carrier offers something similar or is Verizon the only option right now?

Vietnam SIM Card

I am going to Vietnam tomorrow. I was told to buy a SIM card there to put in my Motorola V365. I have service through AT&T. How do I know if my phone will take another SIM card (is my phone locked)? What benefit is there to get a SIM card there? I called AT&T. No help.

Thanks for any insight.

Phone suggestions for use worldwide

Hello all. I am travelling to Thailand (and surrounding area) for a month then following to Australia for about half a year. I am looking for a phone with the following qualities:

Camera at least 3 megapixels
GSM usable
quad band
gps
wifi

The reason i want wifi is because this would mean could connect to any internet hotspot, and call for free via a program such as skype, correct? Also, if using wifi any data transmitted I would not be charged for. If for some reason that is the case, let me know what i'm misinformed about. Thanks all.

Buying a Phone for Peru (South America)

I was wondering if I could buy used phones here and then sell them in South America?

I would also like one for a family friend who lives there.

Does anyone know what kinds of phones to buy or what phones to avoid. I am not going to start a big company but I would like to take a couple of phones down there on each trip.

Thanks
Jim

US T-Mobile phone - German T-Mobile prepaid SIM

When traveling to Germany, will I be able to stick a German T-Mobile SIM into a US T-Mobile phone (it's got the 900 MHz frequency and has worked on T-Mobile's German network before, using the US T-Mobile SIM; but then of course I was paying the 99 cents/minute roaming charges) and use it as a local, German prepaid phone? I've tried sticking a German post-paid SIM in it on a previous trip, and that worked (this was my sister's, who lives there); I'm wondering, though, if maybe the German pre-paid SIM will register as a different provider. The phone is no longer under contract, so they won't unlock it for me.

I'd like to avoid buying another phone just for the occasional travel (even though they're pretty cheap at only 10 Euros or so - it'...

Anyone heard of this phone?

So I was perusing importgsm.com and I stumbled upon this phone in the budget phones section of unlocked phones. It is called the Song Dic 338/A168. It is a sweet looking phone, has a touch screen and handwriting recognition, and just about everything the TMo Wing or AT&T Tilt has, but it costs only 200 bucks. What's the deal here? Seems too good to be true. I searched and searched (and searched some more) but I cannot find any info on this phone. Anyone heard of it? Is it worth a damn? Let me know!!

Will an iphone from HK work in the states?

I'm almost up on my verizon contract, and I really want the iphone. I can actually get an iphone from HK from my dad since he prefers his Pearl.

Does anyone know if the Hong Kong iPhone will work here in the states on AT&T or Tmobile? Or is it locked? I don't want to spend time getting it unlocked or anything....I really just want to plug the sim card in and go.

Thanks!

Sprint International - new question

I am just about to begin frequent international travel and am analyzing if I should stay with Sprint or move to someone else. My question is that on the Sprint website, it gives certain locations in a country where I will have service, but not necessarily in the location where I will be (I'll be doing mission work in Haiti initially). In doing additional research on other sites, I see that there is GSM 900 service in the area that I will be in. If I simply get a Sprint phone that works on that band (such as the new Blackberry) am I covered, or does Sprint need to specify that I have service in that area?

Thanks for helping a newbie out. 🙂

For heavy int'l. usage, should I go with T-Mobile (who has GSM) or Verizon Wireless (who has CDM)?

For heavy international cell usage, is T-Mobile (with GSM) better than Verizon (with CDM)? I'm debating between the below 2 options:

1) go with T-Mobile (with their GSM network) & get their Bberry 8800?;

or go with Verizon (which has a CDM network) & get VzW's BBerry 8830 "World Edition" cell??

Any advice? I just need to be able to take a plane to Europe, get off the plane, and use my cell phone for voice & data? Thanks in advance all you informed readers out there...

Phone from China to US Verizon

Hello helpful people, my gf and I are moving to the middle of the US (South Dakota) and she has a sweet phone and I want to get one but I want to be sure it will work in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. I've been researching and I want to be sure. Verizon is the biggest carrier and from my past experience the better one in that area. Can someone tell me what my options are? Can I get a nice Nokia or Motorola phone here that will be useful there. On top of that if my fiancee and I can bring our phones from China and they support text messaging in Chinese will we be able to text over our US providers in Chinese?

Programming a Korean CDMA phone for Verizon w/ESN

I have tried a few Korean single band 800 mhz CDMA phones on my Verizon account however one of them I'm having a problem activating and don't know if I'm doing something wrong or if I have an incorrect ESN number. There is no clear "ESN" beneath the battery only some letters and numbers and korean characters. I tried everything that was beneath the battery and nothing seemed to work. I was given an ESN number with the phone and that is not working either. Does anyone know if there is a trick to this or how I can find the ESN number to my phone. Any information would be most appreciated. Thank you!
