future of cellphones

There is a great deal of active research and development into mobile phone technology that is currently underway. Some of the improvements that are being worked on are:

One difficulty in adapting mobile phones to new uses is form factor. For example, ebooks may well become a distinct device, because of conflicting form-factor requirements — ebooks require large screens, while phones need to be smaller. However, this may be solved using folding e-paper or built-in projectors.
One function that would be useful in phones is a translation function. Currently it is only available in stand-alone devices, such as Ectaco translators.
An important area of evolution relates to the Man Machine Interface. New solutions are being developed to crea...

WiFi Cell Phones on the Brink...

You might not have known that smartphones and PDA's were ranked #2 in cellular buying trends for 2005
http://wirefly.net/articles/106/cell-phone-trends-20 ... »
but I think the real question is, what's a company to do in the face of the impending threat of WiFi broadband access?

Adapt, I say! Skype is teaming up with Carrier Devices' I-mate brand to install their VOIP software on mobile handsets, equipping them with Wi-Fi and cellular capability.

Smartphones are cool, but a smartphone that's smart enough to make calls using the WiFi network - way cooler 😁

Locked Nokia 6340i

My friend is a missionary in Mozambique, Africa. His phone was active with Cingular back in 2003-2004. Now the phone is locked. Nokia told me to contact Cingular, Cingualar said they couldn't help unless new service was going to be activated on the phone. Nokia told me it a SIM locked phone which is why only Cingular could unlock it. Is this true? If not is there anyway of finding out the code to unlock the phone without getting new service through Cingular?

Is Verizon's 'crippled' BT immune to bluesnarfing?

I've never complained about Verizon crippling the bluetooth because I recall the ScreenSavers show on techTV where these individuals demonstrated bluesnarfing. See the link:

http://loosewire.typepad.com/blog/2004/08/welcome_to ... » ...

Does anyone know if Verizon bluetooth is truly immune to this? I tried the Verizon board, but I think a tech needs to answer this.

Samsung T809 Questions

I am seriously thinking about purchasing this phone, but had a quick question. I read in one of the reviews that you can't use bluetooth to transfer files to the phone? Is that true? And if so, is there any way around it?

Thanks.

Rebate Scams?

Alot of people including myself are growing very skeptical about any rebates offered with cell phones on this site. I have recently sent my concern to the Phonescoop Web people about their affiliation with such companies that may be looking to scam customers just trying to get the best deal on a phone. I would like to know if any others on this site have had similar bad experiences. Also, does anyone have any honest vendors they can recommend. So far, I have not had a good experience with Foncentral.com, and now I see that others have had problems with Wirefly. 😡

PEBL vs. RAZR

I think the new Motorola PEBL is a really graceful-looking phone:
http://www.mobiledia.com/reviews/motorola/pebl-u6/pa ... »

but Motorola’s going to have to be selective in how they market it. It’s small and has a unique shape, and the finish is very elegant, but that’s about all that distinguishes it from the other do-it-all phones.

Unfortunately sleek is associated with “thin” in people’s brains, so my guess is it won’t surpass the RAZR's popularity:

Survey: BlackBerry cutoff would make some users bolt

"More than one-third of current BlackBerry users would quickly switch to another device if an injunction shut down the service, according to an In-Stat survey conducted last week.

Given a choice of five responses, 36 percent of the users said they would switch as soon as possible to another device for mobile e-mail, according to Bill Hughes, an analyst for In-Stat, in Scottsdale, Arizona. However, 13 percent said they would expect such a shutdown to be resolved soon and would wait a while to drop the Research in Motion (RIM) device. Only 7 percent said they would stick with the BlackBerry for as long as it took RIM to resolve the issue, Hughes said. The remainder were undecided.

The multiple-choice responses came from 76 current BlackB...

Carriers hope 3G grows revenues in 2006

"Will 2006 be the year that high-speed data networks make a significant impact on revenues? Operators are hoping so in light of the fact that analysts are forecasting a slowdown in subscriber growth this year in an increasingly saturated U.S. market. But 2006 will be a tough one as carriers need to improve coverage and continue to come out with compelling devices, say analysts. Verizon, the first out of the gate with 3G, said its VCast service has helped grow average revenue per user on the data side even though it's not a major contributor to the carrier's revenue. ARPU for data increased to $4.85 in the fourth quarter from $2.79 a year ago. However, much of the growth came from text messaging. Confusing, but they must be trying to say that...

Columnist: Samsung's Blade is Razr sharp

Motorola's Razr phone is at the top of the heap when it comes to design, but Samsung Electronics Co.'s new Blade handset, which sports a design very similar to the Razr, may have an edge in key areas such as software, says New York Times columnist David Pogue
