Report: Wireless revenues totaled $174.7B in 2005

"The Telecommunications Industry Association (TIA) said wireless revenues in the U.S. totaled $174.7 billion in 2005, up 10.7 percent from 2004. The growth drivers were the acceleration in handset revenue and new wireless subscribers. According to the association's annual report, the wireless handset and device market totaled $15 billion last year, with the expectation that the market will increase 19.3 percent this year. Carriers added a record 25 million customers in 2005. TIA said that the recent uptick in wireless subscribers is due in part to moderate price increases and the introduction of new uses for wireless devices."

Handset vendors open own retail stores

"An interesting branding war is playing itself out. As mobile operators begin pushing for their own brands placed on mobile phones, handset makers are fighting back by introducing their own retail stores. In a move the vendor hopes will build brand loyalty and show off its phones' features, Nokia plans to open 18 stores in cities around the world within the next 18 months in places like New York, Los Angeles, Paris and London. Motorola will open one in Moscow, while Sony has several flagship stores. It's an intriguing concept that may just help vendors distinguish their products from one another. This is a market dominated by me-too products, but handset makers also have to be careful not to upset the carrier ecosystem when it comes to selli...

Help with 8125

Just got the 8125 and it is pissing me off to no end. I have two main issues that are pretty frickin' basic. I cannot for the life of me get this thing to send a text message, or to complete a full reset.

The messaging center number is right I can't think of anything else to do.

I've tried a hundred times to do a full reset: holding the comm and voice buttons then holding the reset button, but it is not working. Everything is still there!

I'm not a damned rocket scientist but I should have no prob with this. Is it defective? What else can I do?

Wireless carriers find new growth in prepaid

"Many carriers are experiencing solid growth in prepaid customers, a welcome trend now that the postpaid market is slowing down. Although margins for prepaid are lower and turnover tends to be higher, there are significant benefits, such as prepaid customers' propensity to use data services"

Top 3 Carriers as of 2006

Top 3 Carriers as of 2006

Cingular= 54.1 million (5.06 million signed up in 2005)

Verizon= 51.3 million (7.5 million signed up in 2005)

Sprint/Nextel= 47.6 million (could be more because of the recent purchases of affiliates, which didn’t close yet or just recently closed after the 4th quarter report) (6.8 million signed up in 2005)

-----

As we can see, Verizon continues to do well year over year and will probably do well in 2006 and we can see that Sprint/Nextel is ahead in net adds of Cingular, but behind Verizon. I think we can see that this trend will continue that Verizon will lead the total net adds for 2006, sprint/Nextel will be number 2 and Cingular will be number 3.

I think with the future developments for sprint...

Try out a new simple Java app for mobile phones

Tested on Moto Razr, P900 and Nokia Series 60. Do let me know if you are able to run it on other phones.

The application lets you access web content in a unique way. You can start by subscribing to your favorite sports feeds, news, flickr tags, horoscopes, RSS/Atom feeds, etc. in a couple of clicks and stay updated with the latest. You can exchange free text messages with anyone using this application (even bring your friends on board), share articles that interest you, invite anyone for discussion, create a community to stay connected with the people you know or like minded people that you want to meet.

If you want to explore more you can link to people already using this app and also by inviting your friends. The people you link to...

Those thin signal boosters? Has any tried them before?

I've seen them a few places--the thin antenna's (I would assume) that you can place between your battery and the phone itself.

Has anyone tried them, and do they work at all?

I'm not asking for a specific phone--just if the thing actually works.

TYPE OF HOME BASE UNIT TO HOOK INTO LAND LINES

Does any one know of a product, phone, modem or base unit, where your cell phone calls when you are home can be routed into your existing, but disconnected wire service. I hate paying for my land line, especially since a new tower has gone up nearby and we get good service at home. Again not sure what you would call this, but a unit whereby you could disconnect your local land lines and have a unit you could switch on or connect to your cell phone that would route calls through your existing house extensions. With add a line family pricing at $10 - $15 if it would take the place of local service bare price @$28.00 - $37 with some options. thanks.......

T-Mob's 3G Strategy in the US: UMTS

Hey y'all,

I just wanted to bring your attention to this article about T-mobile's utilization of UMTS as its 3G solution for the United States in 2007.

http://mobilehipster.com/t-mobile-news/video-on-the- ... »

Its interesting that t-mob is bringing 3g services to the US so late in the game. So far it seems they plan to use UMA to get more mileage out of their EDGE network until UMTS is ready next year.

I guess they're gambling that consumers are not yet ready for widespread 3g technologies.

What Verizon phone meets my requirements?

Hi guys, I'm thinking of going with Verizon for the coverage but they don't seem to have the phone that I want.

I prefer NOT to have a flip phone but prefer the candy bar type.

I really DON'T need to carry music with me, don't really need a huge screen, NO cameras nor vcast and stuff, BUT, I would like bluetooth for a bluetooth headset and probably a phone I can hook up to my laptop so I can get on the internet.

What are my options? At verizon they told me it would HAVE to be a flip phone.

Thanks

George

Wireless Internet and phones

Some help please, ppl!

I have to give a presentation next month regarding internet service on cell phones and PDAs. I am looking for some feedback on what carriers have which service, and what features people tend to use the most.

Who of you actually use your phone to get online? Do you use PDAs? What things do you check out online (MapQuest, Games, Chat, Instant Messaging)? Let me have it!

Thanks!

Trend: US leads in ringtone downloads

"M:metrics' first comparison of German, UK and US use of mobile content shows that US consumers outpaced their European counterparts when it came to downloading ringtones. During the last quarter of 2005, 9.7 percent of US mobile subscribers downloaded a ringtone compared with 7.1 percent of Brits and 7 percent of Germans. But 4.1 per cent of UK users had downloaded a game in the period of the survey compared with 3.3 percent of Americans and 2 percent of Germans.

Cellular/WiFi handset battery life is poor

"With all the hype surrounding the introduction of cellular/WiFi handsets, softswitch platform provider Netcentrex reminds us that battery life stinks, making fixed-mobile convergence (FMC) unattractive at this point. These handsets are burning up the battery power too fast, meaning users only have about four hours in standby time. So don't expect the FMC market to take off too quickly. Netcentrex reckons it will take about six months for handset makers to resolve the battery consumption problem.

RadioShack rocked by wireless sales

"RadioShack posted a 62 percent drop in fourth-quarter net income, and announced a massive restructuring plan that could include closing up to 10 percent of stores. Wireless is primarily to blame. The company told investors that strong sales in products such as digital cameras, satellite radios and portable DVD players were not enough to offset weakness in wireless and other high-margin items. Wireless sales took a hit when Verizon Wireless transitioned out and Cingular Wireless came in. RadioShack expected a considerable increase in Sprint Nextel sales to offset the transition, but it didn't happen."
