I want a smart phone and need help

I am currently with Nextel and have been for nearly 8 years. I have never been with any other carrier and am interested in switching to another company that has better options for smart phones. I have found myself leaning towards a windows based smartphone so that I can use applications like excel on it. I would like decent data speeds and such and am open to any carrier. I am currently leaning towards Alltel because I know a lot of people on it and they have the my circle thing but don't know how well the data speeds are in comparrison to verizon and such. Any help is appriciated!

Some GSM "Security" questions...

I'm 98% sure I'll be switching from Verizon over to T-Mobile in June when my contract ends with VZW. I plan to get my T-Mobile phone the end of April, beginning of May. But before I jump in I had a couple of "GSM" questions.

Is GSM as secure as CDMA? From what I understand, CDMA has the "spread spectrum" technology which scrambles the signal somewhat so it's harder to tap into from the outside. Does GSM have something similar or the same level of protection? The reason I ask is that I don't have a land-line, so if I call my bank or credit-card companies, I just want to be sure someone can't tap into my line.

Also, what about "911" calls? I know with VZW if I call 911, the emergency people can track you down with GPS. Does GSM or T-Mobi...

Buying a used phone and wondering a few things HELP!

I am looking at buying a used phone that was originally through the cingular carrier which is who I have now. And was wondering if I put in my cingular sim card would i be able to connect to the internet with no problem on the cingular network and download ringtones and graphics as well as send text messaging? Or would I have to do something special with it and get it configured by someone?

Cause I am looking on ebay for one and I am looking for ones that were previous cingular phones but I don't know if I am thinking right.

Please help!

Any mp-3 player phones out there with stereo input?

Hi,

I've decided I want an mp-3 player and have been shopping the new mp-3/phones, so as only to have to carry one device. However, there's one feature that I want that I haven't been able to find.

I observed a person recently recording a small concert on an mp-3 player directly from the performer's mixing board. This is something I want to be able to do. I want to be able to directly connect a stereo microphone or patch cord and record audio in this manner. Of course most mp-3 phones have mono microphone inputs, but I want stereo.

I've hunted for a stereo Bluetooth microphone that might do this, but they don't seem to exist yet. Bluetooth headsets have stereo earphones, but appear to only have mono microphones.

I'm thinki...

Signal Amplifier question?

I am looking for a signal amplifier for the house. I am on Cingular. I live behind a hill and get decent reception on the top floor holding the phone to the ceiling, as well as great reception to either side. I am looking for something that isn't $200 to $600, more like the $100 or less range. Do the car passive antenna's work for the house?

CDMA-VS-GSM Technology Advantages?

I know, I know, this is probably the most over asked questions in the biz, BUT I still am unsure! I have done research, and this is basically what I have found:

CDMA: Spread spectrum, more customers can use it, shorter battery life for phones, better in rural flat areas. Best in USA? EV-DO

GSM: Dedicated channel per user, less data functions, better battery life for phones, older technology? World roaming, WCDMA?

BUT my question is which technology emits LESS radiation from towers and mobile devices? Which technology is cheaper to build, and does either one last longer? I live in a rural town, so I HAVE to use CDMA because GSM carriers don't even get one bar at my house.

I also hear Qualcomm is in charge of CDMA. Is this a monopo...
