will rooted devices get update?

Does anybody know if modded/rooted devices will get OTA updates? I'm running CyanogenMod 4.0.1 and am curious to see what happens.

I'm with you about Verizon. It seems pretty unlikely that they would release anything without their signature/horrible red interface (not to mention some crippled functionality that forces you to pay to use one of the built-in components). T-Mobile is probably the only major US carrier at this point that might let a non-customized OS through the door. And we already know that the N900 is slated for T-Mo so it seems like a nice fit. Still, I can't help but ...

True. The only exception to the above is the camera functionality. If you hold the dedicated camera button on the side of the phone while it's closed, you'll get a prompt to activate the camera.

Dude, I've been scouring the internet for info on this. T-Mo's really been courting Samsung lately so it would seem logical but I can't find anything. Engadget.com usually knows that a carrier is going to have a phone at least a few months in advance so I'm guessing we're not going to see it for the holiday season. My contract is up so I could save some serious cash if they decide to get it. If it doesn't show up pretty ...

I have no idea why they're spreadin this much love around but I guess it doesn't matter. I've had my PEBL longer than any other phone. As a serious cell phone nerd, I usually buy a new one at least every 6 or 8 months, often even more frequently. I bought the PEBL the day T-Mobile pre-released it, which was in December of last year. It is without a doubt the best phone I've owned to date. If you're like ...

Bad news, still bogus. I got the same battery life in residential areas with full signal strength nearly all the time. I've seen a few other reviews saying the same thing. At least for me, the battery life is unacceptable. My phone needs to get a solid 24 or it's dead to me.

I called Helio's customer service before I bought my Drift and asked them similar questions. Because I wasn't a customer yet, they wouldn't transfer me to tech support to answer my nerdier questions. My first question was whether you could use the Drift as a Bluetooth modem and the guy pretty much said absolutely not, don't even think about it. Because all of their plans feature unlimited data, they obviously don't want to open it up to being used that ...

Re: Web Browser?

My experience with the web browser has been mixed. First of all, "lightning fast" (quoted from Helo's site) is still a vast exaggeration but I'm going to assume it's as fast as any other "3G" network. So far, I haven't been able to access any form of Gmail on the Drift. I've tried using every conceivable way, including Google's mobile optimized site gmail.com/app. This seems like a pretty big oversight, especially since they obviously have a partnership with Google. The fact ...

You can download the Media Mover application from their web site (it's under Support). I don't know if they plan to change it but the link says that Media Mover app is for the Hero and the Kickflip but it works fine with my Drift. The program itself is like every other phone app I've ever downloaded; weird interface, slightly quirky, but ultimately gets the job done. Also, I haven't bought a card yet but apparently you can put files directly ...

Well that's encouraging. I'd really like to believe the battery life should be way better. I work on the 34th floor of a big office building in downtown Chicago. Reception isn't great up here but it's decent and the guy who sits right next to me has Sprint phone that works okay. Guess I'll see what happens over the weekend when I'm not at work.

bogus battery life
Nov 17, 2006, 12:14 AM
in the Article: Preview: Helio Drift forum

I've had my Drift for just a few days now and the biggest red flag so far is the battery life. It got shipped to me around noon the day I got it. I plugged it in shortly after, fully charged it (took less than an hour), and then proceeded to goof around surfing the web and playing with the GPS. By 10 PM, the battery was nearly dead. So I charge it up overnight and bring it to work. ...

Re: Quality of Helio service

Helio uses Sprint's network so (in theory) it should be exactly the same. Since the likelihood of finding another Helio user within ten miles of you is pretty slim, you'd probably be better off asking people you know that use Sprint in your area.

Yeah, as far as customer service goes, they've got the right attitude but not necessarily all the resources they need. I just posted my experience to another Helio forum on here but basically: I ordered a Drift a few days ago and was told it would be here by now. I've talked to about five customer service reps, all of which were incredibly nice but I swear they're just making stuff up. The first guy told me it would ...

Again, I'm getting my information from an Engadget post but the review says that it uses both A-GPS (the "built-in" CDMA flavor) as well as regular GPS. The post refers to it as a hybrid: http://www.engadgetmobile.com/2006 /11/10/helio-drift-hands-on/ I haven't seen this confirmed anywhere else though.

Are you ****tin me?! You can't upload your own? That is COMPLETELY ridiculous. Even Moto's crappy software lets you upload your own. Then again, I guess they're not in the business of selling MP3 ringtones. Wow, that's a letdown.

drift on back order and credit issues
Nov 14, 2006, 10:36 AM
in the Article: Helio Introduces Drift With New Location Services forum

Just thought I'd share my experience so far: First of all, if you have bad credit, Helio might be the carrier for you. I tried ordering online but after the credit check finished, it said they could not extend credit to me at this time. I was bummed so I called their customer service to see if there was anything they could do about it. The guy was totally like -- hey buddy, no problem! He told me that if ...

I agree that the mobile MySpace thing does seem a bit silly without a keyboard. But... This is the most **** I've ever seen jammed into a phone of this size. The fact that they got a GPS receiver in there (that apparently works, according to the engadgetmobile.com post about it today) still amazes me. If a keyboard got involved, it would have pushed it into the smartphone/pda form factor which, for me, just isn't pocketable. Guess I'll find out soon ...

True, you can't take ANY carrier-branded GSM phone and just pop a SIM card into it. But, once it's unlocked you can. You either have to get the phone unlocked or start with an unlocked model alltogether by not buying it from a carrier. There is no such thing as "unlocking" a CDMA phone though. Think of it this ...
