Re: Trying to stop an almost monopoly?
It won't be possible for there to be a monopoly. The biggest problem now is too many small carriers with inferior networks.
Re: it's sad...
Actually at&t spends more expanding its network each year than any other carrier. Not sure where you are but it costs over $250k to build a site, and so it needs make financial sense....
Re: 9000 BOLD how long
Actually maybe not. I am told there are some SW issues.....
More to follow as I learn them...
Re: Sprint getting this?

If that were really the case then why is sprint hemorrhaging customers?
Re: Oh Yeah!
It's a small group of engineers that volunteer to do the testing. It's actually not as great as it sounds, it can get to be like a second job...
Re: how many cows were killed for this phone?
Just a little play on words.
Re: 9000 BOLD how long
It looks to be on track for an August or September release.
Looks like field testers at att will get the device next week or the week after. Assuming there are no deal breakers as far as issues it should come out soon after.
Re: Sprint getting this?
If they get it before VZ then that will be a surprise but it won't happen this year.
Re: I'm impressed!
Not sure about apple but I agree with the rest. Not that I think the iPhone will be a better device, it won't be, but there is always a certain segment of saps that will line up to buy anything with an apple logo on it.
Re: Is T-Mobile getting this?
Don't get too carried away. While the pics that are out are shown with VZ branding this will not be an exclusive device for VZ. In fact it will also have a 3g version for att early 2009, VZ won't have it before then in fact the odds are that att beats VZ to market with it again.
This will be largely due to the fact that we won't probably see an iPhone 3.0 until late ...
Re: Verizon In September
thunder will not be exclusive to VZ. They may get it but it will almost certainly go to att at the same time.
RIM pushed back thunder at att's request so as to not detract from the 3g iPhone lauch.
Re: Verizon In September
There will not be a CDMA version of this in 2008. Maybe by mid 2009 but I wouldn't hold my breath. att has the vast majority of the BB market and RIM values that relationship too much.
Re: Oh Yeah!
I will let you know. I am expecting a field test unit shortly.
Re: how many cows were killed for this phone?
Who cares, it was probably the hyde of my steak last night!
Re: for those who know a bit more then me
This isn't relevent anyway since Verizon already had a deal in place to swap those areas with at&t for properties at&t needed to divest from the merger with dobson.
Everyone hurry and get em...
I have read some positive some negative here about the iPhone but many of you miss the point. There is a certain segment of the population that are just saps and will stand in line in the middle of July to buy any "great" new product with an apple logo on it.
Yes it has a few new bells and whistles, but most of it is fancy, shiny, glossy window dressing. The existing Blackberries are still far superior ...
Re: N95 feature list...free reserch NOW YOU KNOW......
But at the end of all that it is still a Nokia and therefore inferior to just about everything else on the market.
Yes I am biased against Nokia, but then again I test roughly 30-40 devices per year so I can be.
Re: On second thought
Switching to Verizon doesn't make much sense because they don't get the best devices, there network is inferior to ATT, at least in the Northwest...
Re: hmm didnt think about that
The 8120 when it went to field trial had GPS. I think it has been disabled with software for the release but I don't know that for certain.
Re: im confused!
I suspect you will start seeing more wifi capable devices from ATT in light of the deal with Starbucks. TMO lost a great deal in the Starbucks deal. Growth is in data, there is not going to be money in things like UMA. It will be a feature that people will begin to expect but they won't want to pay for it.
Coincidentally this device did have UMA references in its earliest load but subsequent software upgrades ...
Re: 8110
I am not sure what you think this device is capable of that is not being used???
Re: 8110
I don't know for sure but many speculate that it has to do with 700mhz auction going on.
That and iPhone users are chewing up too much bandwidth on the edge network.
Re: 8110
I won't disagree with you that the best devices usually hit Europe and Japan first. The features of the 8120 show that. Wifi devices have been in Europe for years but we are just starting to see them here.
As to why that is... I think part of it is that US Consumers are whining three year olds that expect phones for nothing, or next to nothing. Carriers can't afford to waste money on devices that ...
Re: 8110
I believe it does video but I did not test that. I stuck it in a drawer last week, I will dig it up and put a SIM in it and check it.
Re: 8110
I have not been field testing the N95.
Now I have field tested phones from every mfg now for 8+ years and I probably test upwards of 20 phones per year and in MY opinion Nokia is one of the worst mfgs out there. Again my opinion. I have tested every type of device on the market and theirs are the most unreliable with the worst battery life of any device I have tested.
Now you like the N95 ...
Re: Wi-fi Pearl
I have been field testing this since October and in a similiar situation where I have no cell service at my home. The data works on my Wifi and works very well... Voice does not go over Wifi. At least not yet...
Re: 8110
This is the 8120. I have been field testing this device for ATT since October.
This device is great, the Wifi works great for data.
Re: Buyout of Edge Wireless?
We can have the GSM / CDMA debate as long as you want. Much depends on how the network is designed and built. Some places some carriers take shortcuts to cram more calls into the spectrum they have in an area. All things being equal, when implemented properly, GSM is the superior technology, UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA etc while based on WCDMA it is for data reasons, and ATT specifically is having some problems with voice quality in some ...
Re: Buyout of Edge Wireless?
Sound quality with GSM is better, data is better, and the last bit of proof needed is that for it's 4G network Verizon announced that it will be using the next generation GSM technology.
Re: No real big deal.
It is a big deal in rural markets. Verizon was facing an uphill battle in the purchase of RCC because of the issue of rural markets....
Re: Buyout of Edge Wireless?
No but the network that RCC operates in the pacific northwest is GSM and ATT currently has roaming agreements with RCC. Edge owns 1900 licenses in several of these markets as well. With Verizon buying RCC they have said that they will convert RCC customers to CDMA (an inferior technology) and make no committment to maintain the GSM network after 18 months post merger. This is what makes this deal almost a necessity for ATT.
Re: Buyout of Edge Wireless?
This deal has been in the works for a few months and was announced today. One of the main reasons for this is the Verizon/RCC deal. RCC has a roaming agreement with ATT in many small markets, especially in the PacNthWst. Edge also has licenses, though mostly 1900 not 850 like RCC, in most of these markets and ATT will probably expand the Edge Wireless footprint because the last thing in the world ATT wants to ...
Re: High Hopes...
Don't know about TM but this device has been in field trial with ATT for about six weeks. The field device included wifi and gps.
Re: Any news......
No, at&t will be the only carrier that offers it. Aside from rumors of an unlocked version direct from HP but I am not certain that will materialize. at&t is in the mode of locking up exclusives for many devices lately.
Re: Is there a New Pearl Coming
Yes.
The 8120 is coming out at at&t in mid-late November. It is not 3G but does have WiFi, GPS, SDMicro slot, Bluetooth, a few other items I can't think of right now. The battery life is great on this device, twice what my previous device would do under similiar conditions.
I didn't test the first Pearl release so I don't know what it was equiped with as a means of comparison.
New Samsung BlackJack coming to at&t
Ok first off I have no other details beyond what I post below. As I get more info I will pass it along.
at&t has another exclusive with Samsung for the next BlackJack i617. The device will be another 3g device like the previous one, it's rumored that it will also have wifi but I don't know that for certain. Another rumored improvement is that 3g battery life will be improved. The device is slated to ...
Re: Please help! My phone is on it's last legs!
This is one of benefits of going with a GSM carrier. The txt msgs are stored on the SIM. If you run into this problem then you take the SIM out and put it in another phone and your done.
As for sprint being a real wireless carrier that is a joke, sprint is going down hill fast and they will fail within the next 2-3 years because have the worst network and the worst customer service.
Re: Does anyone know what markets att is expanding 3g to?
I don't know for certain about your market but I will say that at&t is moving to 3G in markets smaller than yours before the end of the year.
Unfortunately I know of no list on the web or even at&t's intranet that lists the markets. However there is a HUGE push to get 3G into all the markets ASAP!

Re: Windows Mobile 6 Upgrade
Internally at&t has a version they are testing. I downloaded it and have been using it for a couple of weeks. I too have noticed the reception weakened greatly. I live in an Edge area and have not tested this in a 3g market yet.
Bad news for consumers
This is bad news for consumers. Unicel customers will be forced from GSM to a lower quality CDMA network.
Look for AT&T to try and get a deal in place with other carriers to fill this gap. The last thing in the world AT&T likes doing is writing a check to Verizon for anything!
