Is AT&T gonna buy their sister company anytime soon? I want to stop selling Alltel at the kiosk and start selling AT&T. Anyone know about this?

Thanks.

Sister company? I would hardly call it a sister company. But I'm sure they will buy them out in the upcoming years as the shmooze the FCC into letting them do what they want.

I don't see how their partnetship with AT&T is any different than the late Dobson's or T-mobiles... they just offer roaming on AT&T. How does that make it a sister company? Do they have shared assets? Does AT&T have any investments in EW?

Sounds like they are just piggybacking off AT&T marketing.

yes they do. it's not just a roaming agreement, but an actual affiliate. at&t has a minority share in the company.

AT&T Announces Purchase of Edge Wireless

San Antonio, Texas, December 3, 2007

AT&T Inc. (NYSE:T) has announced that AT&T, through an affiliate, has entered into a definitive agreement with Edge Wireless Holding Company to acquire full ownership in Edge Wireless LLC ("Edge Wireless"), a regional wireless company with approximately 172,000 subscribers that operates in several markets in the Pacific Northwest.

Under the terms of the agreement, AT&T, which has held a minority ownership interest since Edge Wireless' inception in 2000, will acquire the remaining 64.3 percent of the company.

The addition of Edge Wireless' GSM network will complement AT&T's existing GSM networks in Northern California, Oregon, Idaho and Wyoming. AT&T ...

I don't think push email is 100% yet. Actually, I set up Sprint Email app on my Katana II. I get mail pushed to it. Doesn't work 100% but it's pretty decent. Better than getting a blackberry and having to pay extra.

This deal has been in the works for a few months and was announced today. One of the main reasons for this is the Verizon/RCC deal. RCC has a roaming agreement with ATT in many small markets, especially in the PacNthWst. Edge also has licenses, though mostly 1900 not 850 like RCC, in most of these markets and ATT will probably expand the Edge Wireless footprint because the last thing in the world ATT wants to do is write a check to Verizon for roaming fees.

No but the network that RCC operates in the pacific northwest is GSM and ATT currently has roaming agreements with RCC. Edge owns 1900 licenses in several of these markets as well. With Verizon buying RCC they have said that they will convert RCC customers to CDMA (an inferior technology) and make no committment to maintain the GSM network after 18 months post merger. This is what makes this deal almost a necessity for ATT.

Sound quality with GSM is better, data is better, and the last bit of proof needed is that for it's 4G network Verizon announced that it will be using the next generation GSM technology.

I do agree that in the long run GSM is going to be the superior technology (since it's going to be using CDMA principles like WCDMA) but as of now I have to disagree. GSM definitely doesn't have the superior sound quality. I had GSM for a couple of years and didn't really notice a difference until I made the switch to Verizon. And there is a world of difference! No more GSM buzz/interference!!! My friends love that they can't hear that ticking in their earpieces from my phones.

That's why I'm glad GSM is going to CDMA-variants of 3G. I'm not exactly sure what LTE is for sure but I'm hoping it's like CDMA and nothing like TDMA (GSM).

We can have the GSM / CDMA debate as long as you want. Much depends on how the network is designed and built. Some places some carriers take shortcuts to cram more calls into the spectrum they have in an area. All things being equal, when implemented properly, GSM is the superior technology, UMTS/HSDPA/HSPA etc while based on WCDMA it is for data reasons, and ATT specifically is having some problems with voice quality in some areas.

LTE standard is back to more of a GSM framework and should be better. Assuming that it is implemented properly...

i asked because inferior is subjective. call quality seems better because of the voice codecs, but cdma does handle the spectrum better and you tou...

I'm glad AT&T is looking at expanding their coverage. It's really needed in those areas. Here in Jersey AT&T is really the best from my experience but the places that they need help here are places where the towns don't want towers built.
