As for competence, my point was that is indeed possible to unlock the Iphone.
I would think that someone whose job involves selling and providing support for the Iphone would know at least this, including the caveats for at&t.

Actually if they offer to credit you like that they have just acknowledged that you have in fact been a material adverse effect on you and are now trying to compensate for that.
