Advanced phone but take care of it

Aug 27, 2004 by usiel

I've had the phone for a couple of weeks so I feel comfortable in giving a brief review of my experience with it.

PROs:

1. Great reception and transmission. I have yet to drop a call and considering I came from Sprint this is amazing to me.

2. The GUI seems very logical to me even considering up till this point I had used only Samsung phones. Didn't take me long to easily navigate around.

3. The bluetooth and speakerphone both rock with the former paired with an HS810.

4. Having the transflash removable memory is pretty awesome and was one of the big pluses for this phone that hasn't changed.

5. Mp3 ringers are the bomb...'nuff said.

CONs:

1. The manual is not very good. It is almost like there are tons of stuff left out and this makes it a bit frustrating for newbies or non-techies. Not that I had a problem at all but I had been monitoring the forums closely and would bookmark a thread that detailed something that wasn't obvious.

2. This is only sort of a CON but the phone has so many features and combined with its very nice design is appealing but the phone is fragile. I find myself taking very good care of it and I kind of miss just stuffing my phone in my back pocket.

3. Camera quality so far has been purely fair but I haven't had time to truly play around with it. Outdoor shots are markedly better than indoor. But hey its a phone so that is no big deal.

4. I know they are fixing the bluetooth and with the release of mobile phone tools 3.0 the syncing problems and file transfer will be fixed but it is still a CON at this point.

5. Outside display could have been a lot better. Thumbnail pix are useless when displayed on it. Hell I would rather the v600 outside display almost.

Conclusion:
This phone is a techie dream and has an amazing number of great features. As in anything its not perfect. My cell is my primary phone with no landline so it will be put through it's paces in typical phone use so we'll see how it holds up.

Good To Own a Moto Again!!

Aug 26, 2004 by shaadi23

Through my past experience with owning Motorola phones, I can say that I am very pleased with the V710. Overall, this is a very solid phone. I bought it last week and so far I have no serious complaints.

Pros:

speaker phone is amazing
external display
Bluetooth
crisp clear calls
voice command is like nothing else I've used
large display
great design

Cons:
I have no use for the camera (as of yet)
bulky and suspect casing
no need for the antenna
don't need memory card slot or headset jack (at least not right now)
trouble navigating through menu

This is an excellent phone, and when I take the time to sit down and really explore all that this phone has to offer, I'm sure that this phone will be more amazing than I first expected. My next plan of action is to utilize its bluetooth capabilities, which I think is just unreal. Since I own a digital camera already, I don't care much for the camera on the phone, even though it is decent. I have previously owned Motorola, Samsung, and Nokia cell phones, and this is by far my favorite. I am constantly looking for new toys, and Motorola didn't disappoint with this one.

A great phone... Room for improvement

PRO’s:

- Blue-tooth capability
- Very good speaker phone
- Good reception
- Holster that allows opening flip
- Allows multiple shortcuts
- Voice recording capability. Recording the person's voice on the other end of a call allows storing phone#'s, directions etc while driving
- Individually-assigned rings. Know who's calling without even looking
- Datebook with reminder rings
- Alarm clock
- Ability to access email on the go
- Ability to download ring tones etc
- Voice-recognition dialing. Great when using the Blue-tooth headset since you never have to touch the phone

CON’s:
- VERY hard to read display outside in daylight. Can partially overcome this by selecting the ‘Midnight’ color scheme
- Outside screen hard to read. Would be nice if you could select the outside display background separately
- Some keyboards have very little ‘feel’ in the keys which makes for double characters or missing characters
- Very uneven, poor keyboard backlighting
- Poor users guide
- Gives a series of tones in the BlueTooth heasdet when playing MP3's instead of the music
- Battery life isn’t the greatest and changing batteries is not easy due to difficult cover removal. No extended-life battery available yet. No charger that charges battery out of the phone.
- No day-of-the-week on the home screen. Funny, because it shows when setting the date and time.

Notes:

- You would think the camera would be very good with its 1.2 mp rating. However, the pictures are fairly poor
- The camera takes the picture when you REMOVE your finger from the ‘Capture’ button. You may miss the best shots or blur your pictures by moving the phone thinking the shot was taken
- If you can’t find a way to do something (like delete a photo) try pressing the ‘Menu’ key while viewing the item
- I wish they numbered all the menus so you wouldn't have to scroll to an item
- This phone has tons of intricacies. You can spend hours figuring them all out…. A very versatile phone indeed!

Disappointed in Huntsville

Aug 23, 2004 by DCMarvel

I am very disappointed in this new motorola phone. I currently work in the tech field in Alabama and used to work for Motorola. I am still a big fan of motorola products but this one was a huge failure in my opinion. The construction quality is poor and the features do not live up to their advertised abilities. My keypad is falling off mine, the hinge seems to not work well, and the casing is too easily scratched. Thankfully, even though I am outside my 15 day trial period I was able to get customer service to agree to allow me to return this phone due to the high number of complaints and issues this phone seems to be having. Glad I am not having to take the hit on this phone since I paid full retail for it at Radio Shack. my best friend and his wife still work for Motorola in Birmingham and they said that Verizon has cancelled it's second order for these phones because of the poor quality and high returns. So expect to see shortages. if you still feel you need one I would by it fast because I hear they will be dropping the phone soon.

phone works well except Voice dialing has some problems. It may work most of the time, but if your phone name is not recognized by system, it's impossible to fix. It won't recognize some simple words (try "hospital"), It can't be truely trained and you can't get it to pronounce the directory names unless it recognizes them in the first place. ( I was kind of hoping to listen to the phone's pronunciation and mispronounce it the same way) The phone will not scroll all the entries and " read out" the names! Tech support did not help. they insist that the phone works fine and that it's a carrier problem or that I should have it checked by a approved service tech I don't think this is a hardware problem. despite this, with Bluetooth This is still the best phone I've had yet. I'm hoping this entry will get back to motorola and embarrass them to come up with a fix!

STAY AWAY!! IF YOU BOUGHT..RETURN!!

Aug 17, 2004 by WDCRAZY

Stay away from this phone. If you bought it return it before it is too late. The phone is a major failure. The phone is poorly made (eg: the buttons fall off the keypads, the hinges have a defect, the outer screens burn out, etc), the phone does not meet advertised specs (1.3mp camera my a$$) Bluetooth is poorly supported, reception is strong but sound quality is poor and there is a high rate of failure for earpiece speakers. Too much bad to list. This phone is soooo bad, VZW is even delaying other new phones until after the time period for return of V710 runs out for most new buyers.

this phone should have not been released

Aug 17, 2004 by mikene

camera doesn't even stack up to 300k pixel samsung phones. bluetooth is about the only thing that works well as on this phone. everything else is just ok. overall the phone looks and feels cheap. if you want to spend $250 on bluetooth feature alone with nothing special then buy this phone. i am returning this phone and getting samsung a680 instead. for $250, i rather wait for bluetooth enabled phone from samsung.

great phone but its no superstar

Aug 16, 2004 by adil83

I guess the expectations were just a little bit too great for this phone to meet, its a very very good phone with lots of good features, but some of them fall short of expectations

Pro's
Display Quality
Gets great reception
Looks Amazing
Mp3 player/megapixel camera/video clips all amusing

Cons
I can barely hear people when i talk to them , apparently u have to place ur ear exactly in the middle of the ear peace to get good quality sound, which is a pain in the butt

Speaker phone quality poor/ cant close phone and use speaker phone

Picture Quality not nearly what i expected

Price $$$

overall though i like the phone but those are some major draw backs it has...still by far the best verizon phone on the market

V710 vs. VX7000

Aug 15, 2004 by powerbook76

i had VX7000 for 1 month.
did NOT have ANY complaint about that phone.
AWESOME menu.. ASWSOME camara..
such ease of use.. AMAZING... LG has done some great job making the complicated phone so easy to use.
ONLY 2 reasons i exchanged to V710 was style and bluetooth.

about V710
bluetooth (the major reason i got the phone) works great with ease. i have the H810 motorola headset and it is so easy to set up and use that anyone can do it.
the style? WOW.. much better looking IMO than VX7000. the is sleek and nice.

the reception for VX7000 was really bad. i've read many reviews where people were so excited about 7000's great reception but i had a terrible reception even compared to my samsung a530. the V710, though, has a much better reception than VX7000. heck.. it has the best reception of any phone i have ever used.. maybe because of the phone being able to use analogs, not just digital? i'm not sure but who cares.. it works great.

V710 has the speakerphone which VX7000 does not have. i was skeptical but it works great.. the quality of speakerphone is amazing. now i know what people mean by "office quality speakerphone"

V710 has the no-training-required voice dial. it means, unlike VX7000 and many phones where you have to pre-record (normal max of like 10 to 30) voice to a name to make voice dialing. V710 does not require that training.. if you have names such as richard, mary, susan etc etc, it will automatically understand and call.. now HOW COOL IS THAT? technology is amazing~!
the menu's receptiveness to your button pressing is very very slow for V710 on certain functions. for an example, taking a picture than erasing sometimes takes couple of seconds to occur while VX7000 did things instantaneously.

overall, the actual phonewise the VX7000 is just all around better phone, except V710 has the bluetooth and reception (which are 2 very important things for me)
this is a keeper and VX7000 will have to go via ebay. i am happy with the phone.

Disillutioned/Dissapointed, Returning V710

Aug 2, 2004 by QuasiMoto

Had v60, bought v710, going back to v60....am phone savy, did not have high expectations but the v710 fell flat...looks like Moto dumped this not fully ready for primetime phone on the planned-obsolescence USA market....giving the better product to Japan in a couple of months....wanted bluetooth and other capabilities but this product is not ready overall....Moto should be ashamed for releasing this without proper testing and feedback.

Pros:
a. nice look, nice size inside screen.
b. has bluetooth, nice camera, nice zoom.

Cons (only listing a few of them):
1. it has the "world's longest" antenna (about 8", seems like 2')...embarrassing to be seen with....looks backwards for technology.
2. inside screen section which has the ear cradle gets "very hot"...sweaty, gets messy.
3. outside screen goes off vs. always-on....defeat purpose and usefulness.
4. inside screen also goes off...ditto negatives.
5. you "must" carefully center your ear in the ear cradle area or you cannot hear....the sound it very directed at the center only.
6. you "must" view the inside screen by looking at it directly...peripheral view from side or above is like old notebook screen viewing (difficult or impossible to view).
7. menus and submenus and icons are not clear and not user friendly....someare actually mis-labeled....difficult to find saved pictures and where in the heck you can change options.
8. they seem to be very worried about battery time, as many setup options are limited for viewing time vs. being able to view the screens all of the time.

Maybe future firmware and software updates will make this an acceptable product.Thanks.
