Re: Bad Law
I think the issue is that the fees don't really align with the services being provided. It costs money for Apple to run its App Store, but how does that entitle Apple to 30% of a monthly subscription to Spotify? Wouldn't a one-time fee when they download the app make more sense? Making it 30% of everything really seems like they're not just charging a high price, but taking advantage of their market position, which is by definition monopolistic ...
Re: GROSS
Again, you're describing affirmative action, not DEI. Despite what some of the current political rhetoric would have you believe, that's simply not what DEI is.
DEI and purely merit-based hiring are 100% compatible. DEI is merely having someone around who asks questions like "Are we being racist or biased, even unintentionally? Are we sure we're fairly considering all candidates, and treating them fairly once they're hired?" That's it. It's not a finger on a the scale for minorities. It's ...
Re: Moto G Stylus 5G 2025
No, this does have a 3.5mm headset jack on the bottom.
Re: GROSS
It sounds like you're describing affirmative action. DEI is not affirmative action.
Re: Storage
It's not impossible that some carriers — or samsung.com — will offer more or different storage options. The international announcement included multiple RAM+storage configurations for each model.
But the US announcement only mentions the base configurations, and US carriers are not known for offering options on phones in this price range. Your best bet is that samsung.com offers an option or two, or that one of the carriers decides to only offer a version with more storage (but don't ...
Re: Addendum
There were a number of features/specs that were unclear in the presentation whether they applied to the 13R also. Some did, some did not. We tried to make that clearer in our post here.
The 13R does have an IP rating, but it's only IP65.
There are a lot of differences in the camera setup as well. And only the 13 has wireless charging.
Re: Water Resistance
Yes. The presentation included a demo of putting it in a dishwasher.
Re: Plus and Ultra approved
Indeed. Thanks! It's been updated.
Re: Why not focus on EASIER updates
They have been working to make it easier. I think this is what has allowed some manufacturers to promise more than just two years of updates.
And they have continued to pull many update-able things out of the OS itself.
But I think the OS will always need a device-specific release from the manufacturer.
Re: Who still buys the Qualcomm 4 series?
It does seem like Qualcomm could be more competitive at the low end, and perhaps this new chip is part of an effort to do just that.
But it's interesting that Xiaomi is the only publicly-announced customer for this chip so far.
Re: Boost is confused
It certainly has seemed that way for some time.
I see this news as the first sign of a potentially coherent strategy. We'll see if they stick with it and follow through.
Re: unlocking phones
It will likely only affect certain carriers that still subsidize phone prices, mostly prepaid carriers like Cricket.
Re: Virginia also
Thanks!
Re: Don't work
Are you sure the thread is RCS and not SMS or MMS?
It might require that the Messages app be updated at both (or all) ends to work.
Also note the time limit mentioned in the article.
Re: These are Android , right?
Yes. As it says in the specs, Android 13 at launch.
Re: Teh
Ahh! Thanks!
Re: Verizon 5G
5G already has broad nationwide coverage.
mmWave 5G, however, operates at a much higher radio frequency and thus has range similar to Wi-Fi. It can't reach miles like lower frequencies. So while it's very fast, it will never have truly broad coverage due to physics.
Re: Band 48
No, that's mixing up the two different bands.
Comcast/Xfinity — which already works with Verizon — is going to use band 48 for 5G, and in tests it's working well enough that they don't need band 71.
So they are selling band 71 licenses to T-Mobile, which already uses band 71.
Re: What the heck
We have specs here:

Re: Is This for Any Smartphone/Service?
Correct!
Re: Only unlimited? Is stupid
If you can do prepaid with auto-pay, Verizon does still offer 15 GB for $35/month.
Re: no mmwave tho?
Verizon has been relaxing its mmWave requirement at the low end now that they have mid-band. And there's just no way to have mmWave in a phone at this price; it does add cost.
Re: MHz not Hz
Whoops! Fixed. Thanks!
Re: What platform or carrier?
Good question on carrier. It's T-Mobile.
Re: WTH???
Auto-focus remains very rare on front cameras, even at the high end.
I did a video that touched on this a while back:

Re: A23 5G
It does. That's standard on all new 5G phones for US carriers going forward. And you can see in our specs that it supports band 77.
Re: Xfinity Mobile fudges price comparison to T-Mobile
Eh... the Base Essentials is not an "unlimited" plan, so that's not quite a fair comparison.
Re: Where are all the 5G bands?
In general, more bands are better, yes.
But all that truly matters is whether it supports all the bands used by the particular network you're trying to use it with. So while it's nice that the iPhone 13 supports 5G in bands 1, 3, 7, 20, 28, 38, 40, and 78, those bands aren't used in the US at all, so it's really irrelevant when in the US. Similarly, Verizon doesn't use bands 30, 41, nor 71, so the ...
Re: "GETS INTO US 5G"
Unlocked phones that work on US 5G networks are still quite rare.
Re: 5G?
Do you mean how many network bands does it support?
Since it's a T-Mobile-branded phone, it's safe to assume that it fully supports T-Mobile's 5G network, including all bands (except mmWave, which T-Mobile does not prioritize.)
Re: Still Awaiting Android 12
That's become the norm. It feels frustrating, but it's actually how it should work. It's a good thing that Google does annual new versions, and it's an even better thing that they have a long development cycle that gives device makers and app developers plenty of time to get ready for each new version. But it does mean a ton overlap where you're hearing about new versions over a year before you actually get them. It's annoying, but the ...
Re: 5G
"Sub-6" includes both low-band and mid-band, so band 41 is both sub-6 and mid-band. Band 41 is much wider and therefore much faster than most low-band bands.
Yes, carrier aggregation generally improves speeds. But some bands — like band 41 — are actually wide enough that you can sometimes perform carrier aggregation within that one band.
Re: 5G
All T-Mobile 5G phones support T-Mobile's mid-band 5G (band 41).
Re: A33
The A53 definitely does not. I'm pretty sure the others in this Ax3 series also not have one.
Re: Ultra or Note?
Pretty much, yes.
Re: ASHA
It is rated M4 T3 for hearing aids.
Re: This Is the Second New PTT Phone
It is Kodiak.
Re: You get what you pay for?
I wouldn't say you'll necessarily have "very spotty service". It's true that this doesn't support every single US band, particularly AT&T's "extra" bands (14/29/30), and the forthcoming C-Band (77). So you won't get the best possible service (particularly in regard to data speeds) in some situations. But it should at least get good coverage in the US.
Re: Say it Ain't So!
Agreed.
Re: Say it Ain't So!
I think it's very dangerous to just wave this sort of thing away.
Everyone should take reasonable steps to protect their devices and data. That's true of both corporations and individuals. Some corporate data breaches are preventable, if the IT department simply does a better job. Likewise, it's important that you and I apply important security updates on our devices when they become available.
This article is simply trying to alert people that they should update any Apple devices ...
