Awesome phone by Nokia and easy to use!

Sep 17, 2006 by Trance72

As usual, Nokia never disappoints. This Nokia 6102i is awesome! Excellent reception (Cingular, Tulsa, OK) and easy to use! I'm not sure what the other people are complaining about not being user friendly, but it just is. You may have to go through some menus, but with every flip-phone I've had that has been the case. Also, from what I have read from other reviews, people have mentioned it is difficult to get to the camera. All I have to do is click on my right-selection key, and it's on camera mode. You can set this up by going to settings, then my shortcuts....and this gives you a ton of options to setting up your navigation keys and right seletions key. I also love the left selection key because it is a goto for some of the deeper menu driven items. Simple, simple, simple....that is Nokia.

I recently bought a RAZR again just to test it out. Dropped calls, would go straight to voicemail, could not hear.. none of that with this Nokia 6102i....took the RAZR back. I have not used the Bluetooth. Also, I've read it is annoying clearing text messages (which is easy to clear), and people don't like when you close the flip it leaves it exactly where you left at. I think this is a VERY convenient feature, because sometimes you have to close the flip to do something else for whatever reason, and it leaves you right where you were at. That is just awesome I think! To go back to the main menu...just press the end key and you are there.

If you are a Nokia lover, you'll love this one. It has everything the RAZR has, and some better features. Also this has better ringtones than the RAZR's, although I will give the RAZR credit for it's music ringtone sound....better bass in it.

PROS:
Easy to use.
Reception is excellent!!
Ear-piece volume is decent.
Great camera.
LOUD ringers.
Great vibration.
Compact size.
Decent battery life.
Nice design.
Very nice external display.

CONS:
Zoom feature, 6102i buttons smaller than 6103, video is ok.

I'm Happy...

I just got this phone, and have been pretty happy. I read a lot of reviews that were talking about the volume problem but I really haven't encountered it, but I did do turn on the feature that most say fixes it, so maybe thats why.
It is a nokia so the menu navigation is different, but if you buy a noika, you have to anticipate it

PROS:

--Design (looks nice)
--outside color display
--camera with video
--FM radio (actually a very cool feature, but you do have to have the ear-piece with it, even when your playing it through the speaker)
--Picture color ID

CONS:

--Cant give a contact a specific ringtone!! (this one really got me, you can only give groups specific ringtones. So if you want one person to have a ringtone you have to make that person be their own group! very annoying but workable.)
--Camera could be better
--Cant zoom before taking picture, only after.

I purchased this phone in february by march it had started giving me minor problems .. when i opened it the screen showing up was delayed, Now that it is July my screen fades out completely for hours or days. It is a big hassle and i regret purchasing it. Other people with this phone have complained of similar problems.

Disappointed with Design

Jul 24, 2006 by borisov

If you like logical and intuitive design, don't get this phone. It is frustrating to navigate through Nokia's mess of menus. Also, the screen keeps turning off after only a few seconds no matter how I adjust the settings |:

Pros: Loaded w/ features. Nicely priced. Speaker and earpiece are loud and clear.

Cons: Terrible menu design. Kind of bulky.

Not bad for a Nokia!

Ok First off this review is for the "PHONE" not the service. Everyone on here seems to like to bash on certain carriers. This is phonescoop.com not servicescoop.com

If you have bad service in your area, thats your problem no one else's so lets stay on subject of reviewing fons.

I work as a tier III tech for a certain wireless company. So I know most fons in and out..I have had a Sanyo pm 8200, nokia 6010, sidekick II , moto v360 and this nokia6103 in the past 2 years. Im always trying to find a better fon.

This nokia is decent with nice features like bluetooth, infrared and fm radio. But still like all nokia's has a horrible menu navigation and lacks in pixel quality on the screen.

Pros:
Bluetooth
infrared
speaker-fon
fm radio
Nice design (outside)
Decent camra
Price :)
Very nice outside display

Cons:
Camra could be a bit better
Inside design isnt all that great!
Fm radio only works when pluggin in a addnl device. then allows you to access loud speaker.
Horrible menu navigation (all nokia's)

Over all this is a decent fon, got it for $30
but im sticking with my moto v360 since it has an mp3 player and better display quality.
I'll more than likely trade if off for a sidekick III within a couple of months...

I am REALLY diggin' this phone!

I bought the 6102i. I upgraded from an OLD Nokia model. I really like this phone. It has a lot of features that obviously my old dinosaur did not have. I really like the fact that I got it FA-FREE through Cingular on-line. It was $99.00 with $99.00 instant rebate/ discount! It prices at Sam's for 40 or 50 with new contract. I am excited to get a bluetooth for it. I thought I could use my ear bud with an adaptor they sell for like 5 bucks. They don't work, keep your money! There are other complaints that say the ear piece is not loud enough; TRUE you do need to hold your head just right, makes driving a pain, but the loudspeaker works well enough. I noticed that the 6103 through Tmobile is EXACTLY the same, But the buttons are bigger and the outside is rubberized like the moto's. If you prefer T-mobile as a provider, I would get the 103 for that alone. The small buttons are irksome. SO!

Pros: LOTS OF FEATURES, downloads ring-tones fast, camera, bluetooth, I get better reception then I had before, customizable navigation keys.
Cons: small buttons, there is that pause in pressing the down key and the time it takes to pop up like 1-2 seconds, and the ear piece takes some getting used to.

If you are upgrading from a dinosaur like I did, you probably won't even notice these things. I reallllly like this phone!

1st Nokia Phone

Jul 12, 2006 by nave462000

Although I must admit, this is quite a basic phone considering my past histor (Motorola e815, sony ericsson w600/z520i) it is somewhat comparable to the Sony Ericsson z520 because of its features.

This is my first nokia phone. I've never even used one up until now. The nokia interface is quite mediocre compared to Sony Ericsson but it beats Motorola's crappy UI any day. I dont particularly like that all Nokia phones are based on a platform, and the fact that this phone is a camshell is effectively an afterthought.

Pros:
Great external screen, probably better than the Z520a because it doesnt have contrast probems.

Camera is great for .23mpxl- video is ok but not amazing.

Ringtones are easily sent via bluetooth/pixmessaging

Cool look, sleek!

Reception is GR8

Unlocking like all nokias was a breeze

Cons:
Earpiece not loud enough--major flaw!

UI is mediocre compared to SE

Camshell design is an afterthought- example- when you shut the phone the only thing it does is hang up the call, nothing exits if your in an application or menu.

You can also dial while the flip is closed, meaning you can accidentally dial 911 if your not careful..try it dial 611 with the flip as closed as possible outer screen shows up as closed and press SEND.

Slow UI but its REALLY slow when entering the main menu

Main menu doesnt fit on one screen, u must scroll down.

Reception is OK but not amazing like I was expecting it to be.

Vibrate is not strong enough/ringing volume is average.

Shortcuts can only be customized to a limited set of options that don't make sense, why not SETTINGS?

Volume UP/DOWN adjusts call volume???? whY??
some buttons dont always "press" when you hit them.

Calling Interface- if you recieve a call while in the [for example] settings menu, it does not pop up on top, the phone just rings and you must answer or reject. You have to press clear until you get back to the main screen or else it doesn't show who is calling.

its pretty good. =]

this phone is pretty awesome.

maybe not the best, but i definitely approve of it.

i just bought it yesterday.
its kind of confusing with all of the folders it has in it, but once you get used to it, its easy.

seems everyones having a problem with the ear piece. well actually, i haven't really found a problem with that. i could hear fine. =]

& saw some reviewers who said that if you want to set a picture to a certain person you have to do it right after you take the picture.. well not true. lol.

but you cant set certain ringtones to people unless you put them in groups which i thought was pretty stupid. =/

overall i like this phone.
i would recommend it to anyone.

=]

hope this helped a little bit.

My Quest is over

Jul 8, 2006 by gfbojar72

I have always been known as a cell phone junkie, and I have owned at least one phone from the majority of manufacturers. I always look for the smallest and lightest clamshells I can find, unfortunately when you give up size and weight you give up features ... Not true with the Nokia 6103, more on that in just a moment. I had given up and purchased a Moto V505 because I wanted Bluetooth, and immediately was reminded why I didn't keep my V300 very long ... huge and heavy, felt like a brick. So I was browsing T-Mobile phones (the V505 was unlocked) and the 6103 caught my eye so I immediately came to Phonescoop to compare it against the V505, as well as the Samsung E105, and E315, both of which I've owned and loved the size and weight, but they were limited in features, however I always use them as my benchmarks for size.

The Nokia 6103. Could it be? A tiny clamshell loaded with features and only 3.4 oz. I fell in love with this phone immediately upon receipt. I was immediately reminded of why I always liked Nokia in the past, extremely user friendy menus, large crisp display (6103 inside and out), great reception. With my V505, I always had to step outside of my home to use, now granted this has a lot to do with your carrier as well, but thus far the 6103 has performed exceptionally well inside. I found the volume fine by simply adjusting the volume key on the side of the phone. I also found the phone feels very sturdy and I love the rubberized coating, including the battery cover, unlike Moto. My one and only complaint is the limited ringtones, wallpapers, and other built in media, hence the 4.5 rather than a 5 rating.

Pros:
Compact (size & weight) and sturdy
Excellent Menu interface
Blutooth
Speakerphone
Voice Recorder (Can record calls)
Voice messaging (No more voicemail jail)
Video capture & FM radio (for those that like these features, they do not compromise weight)
Picture ID & Multi number
Two quality displays

Con:
Limited built in media
