Technology bites back

As the science fiction writer Arthur C. Clarke once said, any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic. We live in a magical age in which technological marvels abound.

When you think about it, the fact that we can put a piece of plastic in a hole in the wall, anywhere in the world, and get money, is astonishing. So is our ability to walk down the street and talk to anyone, anywhere. Yet in the 21st century we regard all this, and even more magical things, as normal.

Of course, the technology that e...

UMA and GSM 850 roaming is coming to T-Mobile for sure....

Finally, after asking bunch of t-mobile people, I am certain that unlicensed mobile access will come to T-Mobile by the end of this year. By the way, for those who are not familiar with this technology, UMA is seamless switch from GSM or CDMA network to an unlicensed network like the home wifi network. In other words, your wireless phone becomes VoIP when you step into your house. This is perfect for those who live in a dead zone and can't get a signal with their carriers. such as myself. T-Mobile will provide phones and adaptors for this service.

I was also told GSM 850 roaming will be launched by t-mobile very soon. Possibly 1st quarter of next year. This is very good news for t-mobile and its costumers.

I can't find this feature that I want in a new phone!

I'm currently using a Nokia 6800 phone. It's been very useful to me and my business and now it's time to find a new one.

I need to find this particular feature that this phone has because I rely on it daily.

The feature is a voice memo recorder that allows me to set a reminder alarm for that memo. The alarm can be set for any date and any time.

I must have 15 or so voice memos set right now for things like inventory ordering and bill payment reminders.

The other thing I'd like to see in this feature is like this phone... when the alarm goes off the phone will beep and vibrate and the alarm goes on for about 30 seconds before it will stop on it's own. If that doesn't get your attention, I don't know what will.

I've contact...

tiny veiwong screens begone!

I have consistently stated my abhorrence of the small screens for viewing text from books. Now it appears that may be a thing of the past.

WIRELESS WEB

Can anyone tell me if there are any phones or carriers that can veiw a full version web or is it all text based? I heard that maybe the treo 650 could. And i was wondering of other smartphones or phones, for that matter would do the same.

Thanks,
Ali

Motorola MPX Lost Another One

I am so glad that I have been unable to find a Motorola MPX to buy !!!

When I first saw the phone, I though wow - looks real good and I want one now!!

But because I could not find one I have had to read all the boring bumf about how it is low on memory, keeps crashing and is overpriced. Yep I know I should read that anyway, but this time I had to to try and find one that was for sale!!

Finally the penny dropped - the phone would have been good if it was released a year ago, but now it is outdated, under accessorised, lacks facilities is over priced and generally unavailable - Thank goodness I never found one to buy!!

I am off to look for something tried and tested, available and priced in the "You do get what you pay for" range!...

Japan Cell-Phone Users Turn to Literature -no thank you!

no thank you. I enjoy my eyes health and do not enjoy reading a couple of lines on a screen. I would be more willing to listen to a book in those inconvenient locations where I could not pull out my book and actually handle it. The aesthetics of reading is being compromised. I have no problem if others want to use this service but not me.

Unlicensed Mobile Access launch date??????

I've heard that T-Mobile and Cingular are the most active in releasing UMA technology. I've spoke to a T-Mobile executive in so cal. and he mentioned that Motorola has already manufactured a wifi/UMA handset for T-mobile along with an adaptor that connects to the wifi router. However, he didn't say when UMA will be launch for T-Mobile. I haven't been able to get any T-Mobile reps to answer my question. Do any of you know?

Is it in the future?

Imagine if we could only buy our televisions from the cable company, buy our computers from the internet service provider, buy our appliances from the electric company, buy our home telephones from the phone company, or buy our vehicles from a financing company (and only certain companies would offer certain vehicles)?

As crazy as this sounds, this is exactly what the cellular industry is right now. Do you ever think it will catch up to the real world where you can purchase a phone from anywhere and then choose your cellular service provider separately?

The cellular industry is so frustrating right now because in the area where I live, VZW is clearly the best provider, yet their phone choices are terrible. I wish I could find a basic p...

Hey all

I was wondering if anyone knows how to get rid of T-Zones, or reconfigure it, so that I can use the web-enabled features with a provider other than t-mobile? I tried using that mouse2web thing that nokia has, but nothing comes through (not even mms settings or anything).

any suggestions?

thanks!

phones for vision impared, low motor skills, etc...

My Mom is approaching 80 years young and she's getting frustrated with her Nokia 5185i (verizon) phone. Browsing in the local Verizon and Radio Shack stores I couldn't find any phones that seemed suitable for an older senior citizen. Some crucial design points are:

1) large illuminated buttons in familiar grid

2) clam-shell or equivalent design so that buttons and screen are protected when phone is not in use, AND speaker and microphone are close to human adult proportions, phone intuitively turns on (or answers) when you open it, and turns off (or hangs-up) when you close it.

3) speaker (earpeice) with intuitive mechanical interface volume control (slider, rotary knob or switch) or adjusting volume (because hearing aids aren't alwa...

The firefly phone sounds good http://www.fireflymobile.com/. I wish VZW and the other providers would support this type of phone. SunCom is offering the FireFly as part of a package which includes 1200 minutes or 12 months of talk time, whichever comes first, for $199. Service is available in select markets, and there are no additional roaming charges.

PS: I have nothing to do with this phone or its partners.
