Number Portability

Hi guys... I work as an indirect agent for Alltel, Sprint, and T-Mobile, and we've been starting to get bulletins on the number portability process. Excuse me when I say that it looks like it's going to be a royal pain in the ass for us reps. I got a memo from Alltel Corporate, outlining an EIGHT-STEP process. Not only is there kind of a convoluted process, but there are internally specified qualifications for eligibility for customers to port numbers, each carrier having their own set of qualifications. What these are exactly, I have yet to find out... anyone else know what any given company's qualifications are? I imagine a steady payment history is the first qualifier...

Forum carrier discussion groups

Are the discussion forums for consumers or disgruntled employees to air their views?

I am a consumer looking for information that compares phones and technologies, but also information from a consumer stand point as to how the various carrier perform so that I might make an informed decision on the best carrier and phone solutions for my needs.

I have looked at the ATT discussion group for several days, and posted a couple of inquiries. It seems as though most of the discussion that goes on there is from ATT reps airing their gripes and grievances.

Cookies

Hey Rich can you make the site so it doesn't automatically remember you when you log back. I'm on a Shared computer and am always having to erase the cookie. I would prefer it be like other sites and ask if you want to be remembered.

Thanks.

What problems will I have if buying a Phone over the net vrs ....

Ive found a better deal on purchasing a Ericsson T616 over the net (on-line store for free vrs walking into my local Cingular dealer where it will cost me $100.00 after a rebate).

Anyway, my question is:

Its obvious the "on-line" store is giving the phone away cause they want to get credit for signing you up with their carrier which in this case is Cingular. My current carrier is already Cingular therefore are they or will they still sell me the phone (give it to me as their advertizing says "for free") when............. (now correct me if Im wrong but,), I believe that if this on-line store is in Ohio, and Im in Texas I would have to take this phone in a local Cingular (texas) to get it connected/activated anyway.

Hope you know ...

Is forum as user friendly as possible?

First, let me begin by expressing my gratitude for phonescoop.com. This is by far the most impressive resource for those in the wireless industry that I have stumbled upon in some time. Now, just a pet peeve, but the forum could be easier to navigate. My suggestion would be to use a style like the one demonstrated in this link http://www.infopop.com/products/ubbclassic/po weredby_ubbclassic.html
(you may have to cut and paste to your address bar)
this way, a thread will be readable from top to bottom, instead on having to hunt for the original post, and those following it. any opinions?

Daylight Savings Time

Just a quick note:

To keep times displaying correctly throughout the site, you may need to adjust your user account preferences for Daylight Savings Time. The site doesn't adjust it automatically. Sorry about that! 🤭

To set your time: log in, click "Your Account" in the blue bar on the left, then scroll to the bottom, choose your current local time, and click "Update Account".

Hopefully by the time spring rolls around, I'll have a fix for that.

Supporting Phone Scoop

Rich,
If you could add a "paid advertising" section (or some such) to the "Links" section it would help me support you. I click through, and have referred several other people to, sites I have seen advertised here. Of course this would require some more maintenance from you since you would want to remove past advertiser's links from that page. Well, it's just a thought.

I am of course assuming that you get paid for click throughs and/or earn a commission off any purchase that linked from your site.

Brand-specific Headset Jacks--Nokia

Will anyone tell me why Nokia has THREE types of headset jacks out there? And why isn't it THE RULE to have phones equipped with a STANDARD 2.5 mm mini jack, instead of all these propietary headset jacks? I have sensitive ears, and it's become a royal pain, trying to find a headset that will fit both my ears and my otherwise perfectly serviceable 6610. When I used Sprint, all three phones I owned had standard mini jacks, and it was easy and relatively inexpensive to find a headset that didn't hurt my ear. Now, I think I have only three headsets to choose from, and I'll be damned if I spend $20-30 on a headset that won't allow me to talk comfortably on the road for hours at a time...

GRRRRRR 😡 😡 😡

Rich, I have a question about the contest.

What if the winner of the give-a-way does not have service through any of the carriers for the phones being offered?? Any chance you can change it to have at least a phone from like all the major celluar players, like Sprint PCS, Verizon, T-Mobile, Cingular, AT&T, Nextel.. Cuz If I happened to win, I wouldn't be able to use any of the phone being shown becuz I am with Sprint PCS. So would you give someone in my situation the choose a different phone?

Phone Finder Enhancements

Just a quick announcement:

A couple of much-requested enhancements have been made to the Phone Finder:

  1. In Extended mode, there is now a "Global Availability" option in addition to the "U.S. Carrier Availability" option. Before, if you searched for "coming soon" phones, you could only find phones that were listed as "tentative" for at least one specific U.S. carrier.

The new Global Availability lets you search for unreleased phones regardless of whether a U.S. carrier has plans to release the phone. It also lets you search for released phones, even if the phone has not yet been released with a U.S. carrier.

  2. Platform / OS has been added to the Phone Finder. This lets you search for Palm OS phones, Series 60 phones,

comparing phones?

Hey, you used to be able to compare phones on this site, but then you updated it and I can't find the ability to compare anymore. What's up? I know I'm stupid, but where is the ability to do side by side comparison?

First "Interactive Review"

As long-time readers will know, I don't usually do in-depth reviews of individual phones. There are a couple of reasons for that. First, the other phones sites already do that, and do a good job. I want to offer something different. Second, if I did them, I'd want to do them right, (really in-depth,) and I just don't have that kind of time.

But now that the site is pretty big, manufacturers really want me to review their phones, and I frequently have access to pre-release phones that lots of people are interested in.

So I'm going to try something new - an "interactive review". I'll post some casual first impressions, and then people are welcome to ask me questions about it, while I still have the phone (usually a week or two).

First...
