ActiveSync asks for device SMS address

JimmyS

I tried to setup AS to send alerts/emails from my exchange server to my Q as they arrive. But in order to do that, AS asks me to enter a device SMS address. I thought it was my phone number but its not. Anyone know what this should be?

www.vzw.com --> support

or

www.vtext.com --> help

or

*611 on your VZW handset.

You will find this information there.

I don't understand why it would be asking you for this. I thought the Q had direct push through Goodlink software that should have came on your device. The only reason it should need the SMS address is if it is pulling email instead of pushing.

You need to use your phone number @vtext.com

for example 5551118888@vtext.com

The reason: in order for the server to push e-mail it needs to send your phone an SMS to wake up your device and tell it to sync.

so it's not a true 'Push' but it's as close as it gets without a blackberry or goodlink.

But I was under the impression that the Q has goodlink. Many things I have read have said that the Q has diect push through goodlink. Is what I read incorrect? Does the Q not have goodlink?

Using the SMS method causes you to go WAY over your text message allowance every month. I tried it on my old Treo 700w before I got the update on it and eventually got he Q.

And, FYI, there is one...

I dont use goodlink so I'm not sure of its' features and capabilities. But I found exactly the same information that sizzle posted. Thanks Sizzle!
I've implemented it and it works great. I sometimes get the email faster on my Q than my Outlook 🙂

I'm not sure if we are sent a real text msg. Its' not like I get a 'real' SMS every time I get an email. It just sends a signal (invisible to me) to my Q and asks the device to sync. I'll find out at the end of the month if there are any charges to do it this way.

Trust me. There are charges. I had done this on my old 700w before I got the Q and I got text charges out the ass.

You bet you will be charged SMS rates using AS Exhcange, it sends a SMS to your phone but it is not visible. If you get allot of email, you can get 2000 or more SMS messages a month. If you have a basic SMS plan, you better get your check book out. The Motorola Q does not come with Goodlink, Verizon Wireless uses Wireless Sync. It works just fine for me, I use Wireless Sync with my Yahoo and Gmail accounts. I am not going to pay extra for SMS using AS Exchange and VZW does not let you use Goodlink unless you are a business user with multiple accounts. Wireless Sync works just fine and it is easy to setup and use.

Yes the Default SMS is number@vtext.com and is stated on all the pages I listed, would have been faster to just go there then ...

If your company already has a GoodLink server then talk to your Exchange/Good Admin. They can push the Good Client out to your phone.

If you don't have a server you can download the trial here:
