How do I dial letters in automated phone systems?

I'm trying to figure out how to dial letters when calling into automated phone systems, such a as searching for a last name on a phone system. Since the number keys on a regular keypad have corresponding letters (e.g. #2 is A, B, C - #3 is D, E, F), how do I get the "Q" to dial the correct letter without memorizing the scheme? Since the "Q" keyboard's numbers don't list the corresponding letters, this is difficult. Also, I pressing the letter on the keyboard does not correspond to dialing a number for this purpose (e.g. dialing "K" is not the same as pressing the "5" key on a regular phone. Using the ALT key does not make this happen either. I can't find the answer in the manual, and the local Verizon store people can't figure it out either....
